Excuse me, do I <\/em>know<em> you?<\/em> It&#8217;s time to reset your <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-network-into-executive-job\/\">executive job<\/a> search, if such a chasm exists between your expectation and a recruiter\u2019s initial reaction to you. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Welcome to the Twilight Zone of job search. \u201cYou are about to enter another dimension, not only of sight and sound, but of mind\u201d, Rod Serling said at the beginning of each episode.&nbsp;The new galaxy you are about to enter is made of strangers who may not know you, or even know <em>of<\/em> you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ve earned a stellar reputation, are held in high regard by your colleagues and spent an entire career as a decision maker, so you instinctively feel it must go \u201cwithout saying\u201d you\u2019d be a great hire. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Complicating matters could be that your substantial tenure (while commendable) may have caused you to disconnect from today\u2019s job market. Relaunch by taking inventory of the attributes you already possess, then use them to reset.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-color wp-block-heading\" style=\"color:#0d7b14\"><strong>3 Ways to Reset Your Executive Job Search<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Reflect and evolve &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It <strong>doesn\u2019t<\/strong> go without saying that you\u2019d be the perfect choice for the job, so you\u2019ll have to prove your value all over again. You\u2019ve got it in you, just dig back into who you are and what got you there. Here are my top three traits in an <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/5-things-you-probably-dont-know-about-executive-resumes-and-job-search\/\">Executive\u2019s \u201cpower pack\u201d needed for an effective job search<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Humility<\/strong>&nbsp; <\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Some may call it modesty. Simply stated, it\u2019s that\nwillingness to be \u201cteachable.\u201d You\u2019ll need big doses of this to stay current\nand relevant. Accepting constructive feedback is the key to repositioning\nyourself in today\u2019s market. This may prove the toughest pill to swallow, but possibly\nthe most important one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Persuasion <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll have to articulate your worth over and over in a variety\nof ways, starting with your resume, <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-many-linkedin-connections-are-good-for-executive-job-search\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"720\">LinkedIn profile<\/a> and perhaps an executive\nsummary. Once you\u2019ve gotten your message clear on paper and digitally, get\nready to tell the story so fluidly that it becomes a sort of personal mantra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Observation<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Use your keen ability to objectively look at a situation,\nidentify barriers and solutions, then have the courage to act decisively. Transferable skills vs. social capital<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ve served an employer and their stakeholders well, and take great pride in the role you played in the company\u2019s performance. It\u2019s now time to reclaim who YOU are by recalling and repositioning your own identity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Effectively bridging experiences from your former employer is often referred to as using transferable skills. But what you really have to offer is <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"social capital (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/the-power-of-social-capital-in-executive-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\">social capital<\/a> (i.e., people you know: vetted vendors, employee referrals, colleagues who are thought leaders). These are all assets you possess and serve to separate your professional identity from that of your employer\u2019s identity. Time to make the shift to \u201cYou, Incorporated\u201d by optimizing these personal assets you\u2019ll bring. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Imagine you recently drove the implementation of an ERP. These systems are complex, and costly in time and people resources. The company with whom you are interviewing is ready to launch an ERP initiative.&nbsp; You can offer a vetted vendor; perhaps persuade members of the IT team to move to this new company.&nbsp; It\u2019s not just what <em>you<\/em> know, it\u2019s equally <em>who<\/em> you know. You have far more to offer than simply a skill set.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3.<\/strong> <strong>Social identity theory&nbsp; <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As humans, we practice methods of both protecting and\nenhancing our self-esteem. Especially in times of job loss, a desire to present\nourselves in the most positive light is natural but needs to be balanced.\nConsider these two psychological phenomena, which can sometimes be\nunintentional and somewhat subtle, but nonetheless tempting to engage in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Basking in Reflected Glory<\/strong> <\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>People may attempt to align themselves with a success for\nwhich they had little or no role.&nbsp; Give\ncredit where credit is due.
