We&#8217;re following guidelines to stay healthy and avoid spreading the disease. If you&#8217;re job-hunting, you may think you should put it all on hold. Companies aren&#8217;t hiring now, right? And <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/9-things-to-do-right-now-to-get-your-executive-job-search-on-track\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"546\">job search preparation<\/a> may be the last thing on your mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But companies ARE still hiring. And, if the ones you&#8217;re interested in are not, you can still make inroads by working on networking your way in. In this way, you become a somewhat known entity within those companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What better time to focus on learning more about job search and improving your chances of landing a great-fit job, once things open up again?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First thing, accept that today&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/deftly-organize-and-track-your-executive-job-search\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"66\">job search preparation<\/a> is complicated, has many components, and requires hard work . . . . if you want to land a job you covet and deserve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may get lucky and move into a new job swiftly . . . and without doing much work at all. Someone in your network may have recommended you. You may have connected with someone at just the right time, when they needed someone like you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But chances are, you\u2019ll have to slog through the challenge that job search can be, just like most every other executive has to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why the Hard Work of Job Search Preparation Pays Off Big Time<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>But consider this. If you take my suggestions here to heart, and really work on the various aspects of <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/todays-executive-job-search-toolkit\/\">today\u2019s job search<\/a>, you\u2019ll be way head of your competitors. Most people will NOT do all these things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also consider this. Doing the hard work will bring you many benefits that those who don\u2019t do the work will miss out on. It helps you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Identify the things about you that make you valuable to employers who are a mutual good fit.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Remind yourself of all the good work you\u2019ve done for employers in the past.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Generate chemistry around who you are, how you operate, and how you work with others.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Boost your confidence in the value you offer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Communicate about yourself better when you network.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Perform better in interviews.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Land a great-fit job, instead of an okay job.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color\" style=\"color:#0d7b14\"><strong>The First Steps in Executive Job Search Preparation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve written many times about the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"road map for today\u2019s executive job search (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/personal-branding-and-executive-job-search-books\/executive-branding-job-search-ebook\/\" target=\"_blank\">road map for today\u2019s executive job search<\/a>. And you know about things like writing a knockout <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/does-my-linkedin-profile-really-need-a-photo\/\">LinkedIn profile<\/a>, resume, cover letter, etc. You probably also know you need to get involved with social media, build your online presence, prepare to interview well, and get busy networking your way into the hidden job market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>But don\u2019t do any of those things until you first do these 3 things:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Targeting<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Identify a good <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/7-tips-to-build-your-executive-job-search-target-companies-list\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"list of employers or organizations (opens in a new tab)\">list of employers or organizations<\/a> that will be a mutual good fit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The more you narrow your focus to specific employers \u2013 or specific kinds of employers \u2013 the better you\u2019ll be able to market yourself as a candidate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most people start their targeting work by location. Job boards can be very helpful. Search the job title you\u2019re seeking on the boards, including location of interest, and see which employers have openings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m not suggesting that you then submit your resume to those jobs. You should be <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/use-job-boards-for-research-not-to-find-jobs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"using job boards only to build your target list and conduct research (opens in a new tab)\">using job boards only to build your target list and conduct research<\/a> (as noted in the next step).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another way to identify employers is to brainstorm with friends, family and those in your closest professional network. People you can trust, especially if you need to keep your search under cover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, check out Forbes, Fortune and other reputable publishers\u2019 various lists of \u201cbest\u201d companies to work for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Research<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/executive-job-search-research-your-target-employers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Research each company or organization (opens in a new tab)\">Research each company or organization<\/a> on your list. Things to research include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Products and services<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Historical financials<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Competitors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Challenges they\u2019re facing right now<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Corporate culture<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Company leaders and key decision-makers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The places to do your research include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Job boards<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Company websites<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Google Search \u2013 Employees, products, services<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>SEC \u2013 Reports on public companies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Yelp \u2013 Consumer ratings for various service-related companies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>LinkedIn Company Pages<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The key here is to uncover pain points, and why and how these employers need you. What problems of theirs will you help them fix?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Personal Branding<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/the-new-10-step-executive-personal-branding-worksheet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Define and differentiate your personal brand (opens in a new tab)\">Define and differentiate your personal brand<\/a>. Your brand is your reputation \u2013 the perception of you held by the external world. It is the combination of personal attributes, values, drivers, strengths, and passions you draw from. These are the things that differentiate your unique promise of value from your competitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your brand helps those assessing you determine if they should hire you or do business with you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You need to identify those qualities and characteristics within you. Further, communicate a crystal clear, consistent message across multiple channels \u2013 online and offline.
