Everything in it should focus on your value prop, and the qualifications, experience and personal attributes you have that will help your <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/executive-job-search-research-your-target-employers\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"38\">target employers<\/a> as soon as you hit the ground. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You&#8217;ll find more about today&#8217;s resume writing in my post <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/25-tips-to-write-an-executive-resume-for-todays-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">25 Tips To Write an Executive Resume for Today\u2019s Job Search<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Resume Trends from the Experts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Executive resume writer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/adriennetom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Adrienne Tom<\/a> crowdsourced a number of careers industry professionals in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/feed\/update\/urn%3Ali%3Aactivity%3A6986323327082541056\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LinkedIn post<\/a> to get input on resume trends for the coming year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the post was from about a year ago, the trends and advice still apply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She posed these questions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What resume best practice remains steady and will likely never go out of style?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are any <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/executive-resume-experts-weigh-in-on-best-resume-writing-practices\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">resume trends or best practices<\/a> unique for different career levels?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What trend is more specific for senior-level or leadership-focused resumes? Why?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Resume writer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/virginiafrancoresumewriter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Virginia Franco<\/a>: <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>She&#8217;s speaking to query #3: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>When someone is targeting a role in <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/who-is-an-executive\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"39\">senior or executive leadership<\/a> &#8212; one aspect that remains timeless is that I work to tie the accomplishments to the bigger picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By doing so, I&#8217;m showing that the person is more strategic, in tuned with mission and vision, and understands the role they played in advancing it.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Recruiter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/edmhan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ed Han<\/a>:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>He&#8217;s speaking first to query #1 and then to #3: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Reverse chronological, newest-to-oldest work history order. It&#8217;s just too helpful to understand how someone&#8217;s career has progressed, and where it&#8217;s pivoted synergistically, how. This one is evergreen: it&#8217;s cause and effect, and it tells a story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For people managers, talk about the achievements your teams delivered. You are an accomplished leader, and that&#8217;s what you will be brought in to do: drive higher team performance. Maybe it&#8217;s a team that is underperforming now, or has disciplinary challenges, and the last manager struggled with this.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Recruiter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/arpadszakal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Arpad Szakal<\/a>: <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Recently, a candidate provided a link to a portfolio of their work and their LinkedIn page. This left a positive impression as I could easily double-check any claims made in the r\u00e9sum\u00e9, which added to the candidate&#8217;s credibility. Honesty is crucial to success, as a reference check will end your chances if you&#8217;ve lied about anything.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Executive resume writer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/sarahdjohnston\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sarah Johnston<\/a>: <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>There is a trend in home design called \u201cMaximalism\u201d where more is more. This is NOT a trend in the resume world. Less can be more when it comes to resume design. White space, consistent formatting and excellent <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/whats-wrong-with-copying-an-executive-brand-resume-sample\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"375\">copy with result rich statesments is a timeless resume<\/a> formatting style.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Career coach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/adriana-kosovska-people-manager-dream-job-coach\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Adriana Kosovska<\/a>: <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>If you\u2019re changing your job or want a role in a different industry, remember to rewrite your CV in the language your new employer will understand &#8211; especially highlight those key achievements that are relevant for your new employer and use less industry jargon, write about your transferable skills in a way your new employer understands how these can be relevant for them.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Resume writer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/megapplegate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Meg Applegate<\/a>: <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Context + wins will never go out of style for each work experience. The format may change but you need to share the scope of your authority and duties AND share your unique impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With that said lean writing with the \u201cshow not tell\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-c-a-r-storytelling-gives-executive-resume-branding-zing\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"40\">method by providing quantifiable metrics always shares your story<\/a> better.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Executive resume writer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/erinkennedycprw\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Erin Kennedy<\/a>: <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Executives have had to shift their ways of leading to accommodate the remote workforce. Adding soft skills to <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/is-the-executive-resume-dead-or-dying\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"96\">executive resumes<\/a> shows your adaptability in the face of change (communication, creative leadership, vision, flexibility, etc.). Here&#8217;s some of the advice that still applies today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She cautioned that, although resumes are important and likely will always factor into <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/top-10-executive-job-search-posts-from-2015\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"36\">job search<\/a> in some way:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Job seekers often put a lot of pressure on the resume to do the heavy lifting for them in a search, when efforts are in fact best spent on networking and relationship building. A resume should be a supporting tool, not the primary tool.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Career coach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/bobmcintosh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bob McIntosh<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Let&#8217;s do away with verbose, cliche-ridden, value-lacking Summary statements. I see recruiters and other hiring authorities say enough of poorly written Summary statements. Instead, they should be labeled, &#8220;Value Proposition.&#8221; It&#8217;s not a new concept, but it&#8217;s one that makes more sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Job candidates should be thinking, &#8220;Okay, Mr.\/Ms. employer, this is what I will deliver to you; and here is evidence of it.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I know other <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/find-the-best-executive-resume-writer-for-you-wheres-the-value\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"388\">resume writers<\/a> have done this. Let&#8217;s do away with the fluff and instead speak to the needs of the employer.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Careers industry advocate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/mariezimenoff\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Marie Zimenoff<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Two things driven by more AI in the screening process..<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1: Resume strategy will be more important. Keyword stuffing won&#8217;t work. People will need a solid foundation of content that speaks to how they&#8217;ve used skills (and even better, if it shows how they added value as always!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2: The information that is public about you will now be part of your resume. The new systems bring in publicly available online information into your job seeker profile in an ATS (Applicant Tracking System). The good part of this is that our interests beyond what fits on or is appropriate for a resume can help tell our story \u2026 and, people will need to be even that much more thoughtful about how they build their online brand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bonus\u2026 these systems will care less and less about formatting issues, so we can format for the human reader!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Executive resume writer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/erinkennedycprw\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Erin Kennedy<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Add what you did to help your company around Covid. It was\/is such a strange new time that suddenly employees find themselves doing tasks they never thought they would do. This adds more value to your overall story- i.e. no matter what comes up, you jump in to help where you can\u2026etc.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Recruiter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/edmhan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ed Han<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>It seems <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/7-things-successful-executive-job-seekers-know\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"41\">job seekers<\/a> often see the blank page as an opportunity to list in exhaustive fashion everything they have done at every position, current and past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a trap. A <a data-wpil-monitor-id=\"42\" href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/10-reasons-your-executive-resume-needs-a-major-facelift\/\">resume needs<\/a> to be a <em>curated<\/em> list of accomplishments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Educated job seekers understand the importance of customizing a resume for a given opportunity. Part and parcel of customization is inclusion of what&#8217;s relevant and exclusion of what&#8217;s not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Curation remains a wildly underrecognized part of resume creation based upon what I see.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Career advisor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/alokotkova\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ana Lokotkova<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>I\u2019m seeing companies paying more attention to candidates\u2019 soft skills. There are a lot of skilled professionals in the job market, and now employers can fish for more than technical qualifications or hard skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/the-lazy-c-level-executive-job-search\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"43\">job seekers<\/a>, it means more than adding \u201cteam player\u201d onto their resume. It means showing proof of how they were able to exercise their soft skills, and which outcomes that led to.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Career change advocate Lezlie Garr<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The biggest current trend that I\u2019m seeing is the focus on soft and transferable skills. Since these skills are universal, they are key to allowing candidates to be flexible when seeking a new role, possibly in a new capacity, or even a new industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You must differentiate yourself in an increasingly competitive job market. This isn\u2019t about choosing some new crazy resume layout. Emphasize your individual value, demonstrate your adaptability (especially in terms of ever-changing work environments), and communicate how your unique blend of experience and skills will benefit the company.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Executive Career Transitions Coach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/emilylawsonchro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Emily Lawson<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Get crystal clear on your <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/toxic-executive-job-search-beliefs-no-target-employers\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"37\">target job and have that reflect in your resume<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why? There is nothing that will help you get through a recruiting funnel more than being highly qualified and the right fit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s 5 steps to help:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2713 Research the job &#8211; by finding several targeted job posts with similar descriptions and make a note of the core functions and qualifiers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2713 Ensure you are qualified and list examples &#8211; of how you have performed those functions and the value it provided along with the education, skills, etc. required for the role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2713 Make a note of keywords &#8211; that are associated with the primary functions of the role and make sure they are highlighted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2713 Eliminate irrelevant <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/what-not-to-put-in-your-c-level-executive-resume\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"44\">information &#8211; by removing content from your resume<\/a> that doesn\u2019t provide value for that targeted role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2713 Communicate fit &#8211; by researching the culture and branding of the company and include language is included that shows alignment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The goal is to make it easy for hiring professionals to quickly see \u201cat a glance\u201d that you are highly qualified and the right fit for the organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can be referred internally and get faster exposure; but if you are not highly qualified for your target role and a good fit, then your candidacy will likely end there.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Legal recruiter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/schoenlegalsearch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wendy Schoen<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>There needs to be two different categories of advice: those in job search mode and those who are passively looking (happy at their jobs but religiously keeping their paper up-to-date in case of the what if?).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are creating a resume for a job search then by all means have a Value proposition section on your resume. If, however, you are in passive mode, I, as a recruiter, want to see that summary section. I want you to have stressed the most important things that your resume is going to tell me.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Interview coach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/sarahdjohnston\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sarah Johnston<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>TREND: I am seeing companies focus more on soft skills. Google coined the term &#8220;Googliness&#8221; as a quality they seek in their hires. For this reason, I spend a lot of time with my clients focusing on the way they build out high performing teams, what leading with vision means and how they are creating a more diverse and inclusive workplace. Many of my clients documents now include a leadership philosophy and results around people management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>TOP TIP: <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/are-you-tweaking-your-out-dated-executive-resume-to-death\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Don&#8217;t just dust off the same resume<\/a> you used for your last job search. <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/are-you-tweaking-your-out-dated-executive-resume-to-death\/\">Start from scratch<\/a> with your target job in mind. The key to a strong resume is knowing your target audience and addressing their pain points. Just because you spent 30% of your time in 2019 working on a project, doesn&#8217;t mean you need to give up 30% of your resume real estate to the results from that initiative.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Executive resume writer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/debraboggs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Debra Boggs<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>With so many candidates experiencing long-term unemployment or a furlough, it&#8217;s important to show how you spent that time. Actively seek out professional development on sites like Coursera, Udemy, and LinkedIn Learning to not only elevate your skills to but show that you stayed active and engaged during your gap.
