A great resume alone probably won\u2019t get you into your next great gig. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your paper\/digital resume will probably <em>NOT<\/em> be your first introduction to recruiters and hiring decision makers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many surveys&nbsp;show that the vast majority of them social recruit. That is, they source and <a data-wpil-monitor-id=\"864\" href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/ways-executive-recruiters-assess-candidates-social-media\/\">assess candidates through Google search<\/a>, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, and other social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you don\u2019t have a strong online footprint providing them with plenty of on-brand information supporting your value proposition, you\u2019re likely facing a prolonged job search.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All things being equal \u2013 <em>skill sets, qualifications, relevant experience, education, etc.<\/em> \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/toxic-executive-job-search-beliefs-dont-need-online-presence\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"861\">job seekers with stronger online presence<\/a> are the ones who are noticed and chosen over those who have little or no presence online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>So why bother with an executive resume at all? <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Why not go straight to your online personal and career marketing? Three good reasons:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1. You need to get your brand and value proposition together before moving them online, so that you send a clear consistent message across all channels. Slapping up a LinkedIn profile, other social media profiles, a website, or web portfolio before doing the initial branding, targeting and research&nbsp;work is a mistake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. You\u2019ll still need a paper\/digital resume at some point in the hiring process \u2013 it\u2019s still recognized job search currency. So make sure it\u2019s a knockout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3. The work you do defining your <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/4-reasons-you-cant-write-your-own-executive-resume\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"282\">personal brand and developing content for your resume<\/a> (and bio and other career documents) forms the foundation for all your personal marketing materials, online and offline, and offers many benefits:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Helps you develop messaging designed to resonate with your target audience.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Energizes you with what differentiates your unique promise of value from your competitors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prepares you to speak confidently and knowledgeably about the value you offer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provides a wealth of on-brand information to repurpose for each of your online profiles and any web pages you create.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prepares you to network and interview well.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Understand that before you can <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/7-deadly-sins-of-executive-resume-writing\/\">write a great resume<\/a>, you need to lay the groundwork with these critical first-steps \u2013 targeting, research and personal branding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also understand that you should <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-write-the-best-cover-letter-for-executive-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ALWAYS include a cover letter<\/a> when you send out your resume, unless an online application doesn&#8217;t allow for it. Some people won&#8217;t care, but you never know who will care, and who will toss you out of the running if you don&#8217;t include one. So play it safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Write an Executive Resume That&#8217;s a Knockout<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>My 10 steps below provide the basic guidelines to <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/stop-before-you-write-your-executive-resume-or-linkedin-profile\/\">write your executive resume<\/a>. Targeting and Research<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/7-tips-to-build-your-executive-job-search-target-companies-list\/\">Identify target employers<\/a> you want to work for and <a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/best-ways-and-places-to-research-your-target-employers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">research each one<\/a> to discover their pain points. What current pressing needs do they have that you can dive right in and help them with?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you don\u2019t write to a specific target audience, your resume won\u2019t speak to the recruiters and hiring decision makers reading it, or help them connect you to the job they\u2019re trying to fill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They don\u2019t have the time or inclination to sift through irrelevant information to see if you warrant interviewing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everything in your resume has to align with what they\u2019ll be looking for in candidates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/should-you-use-chatgpt-for-resume-writing-and-job-search\/\">AI can be extremely helpful<\/a>, and a major time-saver, for building your target company list and then researching those companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Popular AI platforms include ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and Copilot, but there are many others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In particular, Crunchbase can be very helpful because it provides in depth information across in<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Personal Branding and Value Proposition<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Branding is not optional anymore. In a nutshell, branding links your passions, key personal attributes, and driving strengths with your value proposition, in a crystal clear message that differentiates you from your competition and resonates with your target audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em><strong>The things that differentiate your unique promise of value from your job seeking competitors is what will sell you.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Companies are looking for vitality, good fit, and <a data-wpil-monitor-id=\"865\" href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/what-is-personal-branding-do-i-need-a-personal-brand-for-job-search\/\">personal chemistry in executive candidates<\/a>. Branding generates chemistry and <a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/is-your-executive-resume-an-interesting-read\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">makes you come alive<\/a> on the paper and digital page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Career Success Stories<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Storytelling helps&nbsp;you explain how you make things happen \u2013 <em>how you were able to capture profitable advances for your past employers.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It helps your target audience zero in on what you\u2019ll do for their organization.&nbsp;They begin to picture you doing the same things for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Follow a &#8220;Challenge \u2013 Actions \u2013 Results&#8221; (C-A-R) framework to illuminate your critical contributions to employers. <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Concise C-A-Rs stories are especially helpful in preparing for interviewing. Resume Headline<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Don&#8217;t lead your resume with the job you have now. Use the job you&#8217;re seeking with that particular employer, which your whole resume has been customized for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Back that up with a few of your top areas of expertise, for a headline such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>Vice President | SVP Technical Operations | CTO \u2013 Airline Maintenance Operations<br>Predictive Maintenance Expert<br>Process &amp; Performance Improvement and Transformation with available resources<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or, maybe even better, with a brand statement, for a headline such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>CERTIFIED CHIEF INFORMATION SECURITY OFFICER<br>A clear, transparent communicator and trust-building business leader,<br>I can talk about cybersecurity without using one technical word<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5. Real Estate and Strategic Positioning<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Busy executive recruiters and hiring decision makers typically allow only 10 seconds or so for a resume to draw them in. They may read no further than the top part of the first page when screening your resume.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You need to capture and hold their attention right there, and compel them to want to read the entire document.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Solution: Brand yourself above the fold.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As much as possible, make that section stand on its own as your calling card. Some suggestions for above the fold branding:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Generate chemistry by <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-balance-personal-branding-with-personal-seo\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"867\">balancing your personality with your hard skills<\/a>, or relevant keywords.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Add a powerful quote from a recent performance review or someone you work with.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Include 3 or 4 value-driven bulleted statements with metrics.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Instead of just including keywords here, provide an example of how you benefitted the company by using that area of expertise of yours.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>And, while we&#8217;re looking at the above-the-fold area: <strong>Show that you\u2019re social media savvy.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Include a link to your LinkedIn profile, unless you don\u2019t have one or it\u2019s lacking much content. Also include other professional social media accounts (if you\u2019re active there), along with your online publications and\/or other supporting online info.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>6. Readability<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Many hiring professionals review resumes on their phones, meaning tiny screens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When they open a document or web page, it\u2019s more likely to capture and hold their attention with concise statements surrounded by plenty of white space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Avoid densely packed, hard-to-read information. Shorter chunks of information are easier to read and will draw the reader&#8217;s eye to continue down the page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same readability issues apply to people reading your resume on a large screen. Make it appealing looking and easy to read.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>7. Typos and Grammar<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Doesn&#8217;t it go without saying that <a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/do-grammar-and-spelling-errors-really-matter-in-executive-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">typos and errors in grammar<\/a> are the kiss of death? They may also convey misinformation. Proofread several times and have someone else do it, too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t rely on spellcheck. Make sure your contact information at the top of each page of your resume is correct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>8. Formatting<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep the formatting attractive, consistent, and clean. Don\u2019t use more than 2 different fonts (one for headings, another for content), and don\u2019t choose frilly, unprofessional fonts. Use graphic lines sparingly, and avoid underlining text.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Debate continues over whether an executive resume should be <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/whats-the-best-executive-resume-format-and-length\/\">no more than 2 pages<\/a>, or even only one page. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Typically a one-page executive resume should be avoided because it likely won&#8217;t provide enough information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But don&#8217;t sweat the resume length too much. If you stick to 2 or 3 pages, you&#8217;ll be fine. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let the content drive the length of your resume. What&#8217;s important is positioning yourself as a good fit for the employers you&#8217;re targeting, based on which current needs of theirs you can help them with. And nothing you include should be arbitrary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;ve had more than a handful of different roles over your career, you&#8217;re going to need some space to describe your contributions and the value you offered, using storytelling. That can easily take 3 pages, especially because you don&#8217;t want to cram in the content just to fit it to 2 pages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A 3-page c-suite <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/my-executive-resume-is-too-long-what-to-do\/\">executive resume<\/a> is perfectly acceptable. In fact, almost all the resumes I create are 3 pages, because they needed to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A tip: If your resume spills over to 3 pages, make sure the third page content fills up at least a third of the page. If you only have, say, 5-10 lines on the third page, you can surely edit and tighten things up so that your resume is only 2 pages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, with a 3-page resume, don&#8217;t hide anything important and relevant on that last page. Bring those things forward into the summary at the top of the first page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>9. Blah Resume-speak<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/the-biggest-executive-resume-writing-mistake\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"526\">Write your resume<\/a> from your own voice. You\u2019re not like everyone else. Find the precise words that describe what makes you unique and valuable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep the content interesting and don\u2019t fall back on dull phrases that don\u2019t differentiate you, such as results-oriented, visionary leader, excellent communication skills, <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/10-brand-diluting-phrases-that-can-ruin-your-executive-resume\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"863\">proven track record<\/a> of success, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>10. Passive Verbs and Repetitive Job Descriptions<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Avoid the over-used, boring phrase &#8220;responsible for&#8221;. Show your vitality with robust action verbs and explain your niche expertise with relevant keywords. Use strong words like pioneered, envisioned, accelerated, benchmarked, incentivized, leveraged, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t waste precious space in the &#8220;Professional Experience&#8221; section reiterating obvious responsibilities. Readers will already know the basic duties for your jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, your resume needs to have plenty of relevant keywords in it, but for the highly-formatted version, you can lighten up on them. Instead, jam-pack your ATS-friendly (or text) <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/keywords-in-job-search-how-important-are-they\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"866\">resume with relevant keywords<\/a>. This is the resume version that will go into Applicant Tracking Systems (or databases) when you apply through executive recruiters, HR and online job postings. This can be created as a Word document. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Some career professionals advise creating just one MS Word resume version that covers both bases \u2013 formatted for visual appeal but will also get the resume through ATS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But there are more than 200 kinds of ATS out there. Some accept various enhancements and some don\u2019t. You won\u2019t know which version the company is using and how much formatting enhancement will be okay. It\u2019s safer to have a designated ATS resume version as I described above for the times you know your resume is going into an ATS. If it ever was, it\u2019s not any more. There\u2019s a lot more going on at LinkedIn \u2013 social branding, networking, curating content, etc. \u2013 than the ability to publish your career history online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For another thing, you can only have one LinkedIn profile, but you can (and should) have several resumes, customized for each of the employers (or type of employer) you\u2019re targeting, based on what makes you a good fit for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A LinkedIn profile needs to be somewhat more generic so it will appeal to a wider audience than just one employer. Obviously, you can\u2019t customize your LinkedIn profile for each target company, but you can indicate your job-type and industry preference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your resume shines when you\u2019re actively networking your way into the companies you\u2019re targeting. To hit home with people, you\u2019ll customize your resume (as much as possible) for each target company, and send it to select people at, or associated with, each company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unless you post your resume on job boards, which isn\u2019t a great idea, only the people you send it to will see your resume. Not so with your LinkedIn profile.
