You may get recruiters reaching out to you on LinkedIn, even with a poorly written profile. But you want to get the attention of recruiters in your niche, not every recruiter on LinkedIn, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When done correctly, your profile will sit there, passively drawing the best executive recruiters to it, and to your good-fit qualities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5 Reasons Your LinkedIn Profile Is Turning Off the Best Executive Recruiters<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If these things are true about your profile, follow my advice to fix things. Give recruiters what they need to see in your profile or they\u2019ll move on to someone else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1.  Your profile headline wasn&#8217;t customized with keywords and doesn&#8217;t generate chemistry and interest.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A well-crafted headline strikes a compelling balance between hard and softer skills. That is, the keywords that represent your areas of expertise vs. your personality and people skills, or personal brand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>LinkedIn is a <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/3-ways-to-make-your-online-networking-count\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">social network<\/a>, but it\u2019s also a search engine. Recruiters search using relevant keywords to find people. Those <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/the-two-worst-linkedin-profile-headline-mistakes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">keywords are typically hard skills<\/a>. Your profile <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/the-two-worst-linkedin-profile-headline-mistakes\/\">headline<\/a> is one of the most important places in your profile to add in keywords.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you haven&#8217;t optimized your headline with the right keywords, the right executive recruiters will have a hard time finding your profile . . . and you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The headline follows you everywhere on LinkedIn and can make or break the chances people will click through to your profile when they\u2019re searching for people like you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your hard skills in the headline will help boost your search ranking in <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/find-the-best-executive-resume-writer-for-you-where-and-how-to-search\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"403\">LinkedIn so more people will land on your profile<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your soft skills or <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/what-is-personal-branding-do-i-need-a-personal-brand-for-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">personal brand in the headline<\/a> will compel them to want to read more of your profile, to determine whether they\u2019ll reach out to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More in <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/3-big-mistakes-that-screw-up-your-linkedin-professional-headline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">3 BIG Mistakes That Screw Up SEO for Your LinkedIn Profile Headline<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2.  Your profile doesn&#8217;t position you as the right fit.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You don\u2019t want to work for just any company or organization, right? Narrow your search to employers who will provide what you want and need, and that need what you have to offer. And reflect that in your profile content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/best-ways-and-places-to-research-your-target-employers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Do some research<\/a> to identify employers who meet your various criteria. Then suss out what you have that they need. What challenges are they facing right now that you have experience and big wins with?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Make it clear from the get-go and throughout your profile that you have the goods (experience, qualifications, personal qualities, etc.) to make a positive impact for the employers you are targeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>LinkedIn Jobs and company Pages are excellent resources. Your profile contains very little information about you.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the things I often hear recruiters complain about is <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/find-the-best-executive-resume-writer-for-you-what-questions-to-ask\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"428\">LinkedIn profiles<\/a> that have no meat. An <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/deadly-linkedin-mistake-anemic-incomplete-profile\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">anemic or minimal profile<\/a> does very little to help them assess you, and want to interview you to learn more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think about these people sifting through maybe hundreds of <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/experts-debate-linkedin-vs-the-executive-resume\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"112\">LinkedIn profiles<\/a> to source and assess candidates for openings they\u2019re trying to fill. If they come across your profile with very little information in it about you, and compare it with someone else\u2019s robust profile that positions them as a good fit, they\u2019ll probably pass on you and reach out to the other guy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Use the <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-write-a-dazzling-linkedin-summary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">About section<\/a> like a biography. Don\u2019t be afraid to tell people who you are, what things jazz you, why you got into your field, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember what I said in #1 above. LinkedIn is a search engine. Your profile needs to be written with both <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-search-engine-optimization-seo-impacts-executive-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SEO<\/a> (Search Engine Optimization) and human beings in mind. You neglected the Featured and Activity sections of your profile.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Besides the great content you\u2019ll put in your profile, capture attention and show that you\u2019re social media savvy and up to date with the new world of work by doing the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Add video and visuals to your Featured section. Without scrolling too far down your profile, people will notice what you put in that section. If you have <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-use-video-for-job-search-and-personal-branding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">personal branding videos<\/a> there, recruiters will likely be more attracted to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t have any videos? Now\u2019s the time to start using them. Check out <a href=\"https:\/\/xi117.isrefer.com\/go\/home\/ecbrand\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CareerBrandVideos&#x2122;<\/a>, a customized Done-For-You personal branding video system I co-created with two experts, Hannah Morgan and Andre Palko. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regularly post updates in your LinkedIn stream and <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/showcase-your-personal-brand-with-linkedin-comments\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">comment on other people\u2019s updates<\/a>. They\u2019ll show up in your profile\u2019s \u201cActivity\u201d section and further indicate that you\u2019re adept with social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, you can create a powerful networking strategy by simply commenting on, sharing and reacting to the right people\u2019s updates, posts and articles. Those people include the right executive recruiters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the LinkedIn company Pages for each of your target employers, look for high level executives who may be hiring decision makers. Follow them and comment on their updates. Do the same with industry influencers and other relevant people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5.  You didn&#8217;t use storytelling with hard facts and metrics.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Storytelling helps recruiters get a feel for what kind of person you are. They want to get some idea of your leadership style and how you get things done . . . what you\u2019ll be like to work with. People relate and connect better with people through storytelling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another big thing about storytelling. It makes for content that&#8217;s a much more interesting read than the dry resume-speak usually seen in LinkedIn profiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The idea is to weave together your hard and softer skills in short points that drive home the benefits you\u2019ve brought employers in the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Include the metrics for the impressive results of your efforts, but also map out how you got there. The CARs (Challenge \u2013 Action(s) \u2013 Results) exercise will help you build career stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s a tip \u2013 When writing each short (2 to 3 lines) story, lead with the big result . . . that is, metrics or numbers. Here\u2019s an example for a CEO Consultant \u2013 Business Process and Profitability Improvement:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>Salvaged 65% of over-budget, behind-schedule million-dollar Financial System IT project for $280M utility company. Banked on efforts already invested, redefined the approach, mapped out a new path, renewed confidence, and unified everyone toward the same path of success.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>More in <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-c-a-r-storytelling-gives-executive-resume-branding-zing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">How Storytelling Makes Executive Resumes and LinkedIn Profiles Dazzle<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">More reasons why the best executive recruiters ignore your LinkedIn profile<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Executive resume writer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/90892554\/5-red-flags-that-make-recruiters-scroll-past-your-linkedin-profile\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Donna Svei<\/a>, a former recruiter, offered a few red flags that may cause recruiters to skip over your LinkedIn profile: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Tagging only remote roles<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-find-remote-work-and-do-it-well\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Remote-only jobs<\/a> are on the decline, peaking in 2022, and more than 85% of LinkedIn job postings are hybrid or on-site. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;So if your profile says you work only from home, some employers will write you off before considering you. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, if an employer is really interested in a candidate, many will make accommodations for remote workers. But in order to be considered, I recommend that candidates do not advertise themselves as remote-only from the outset.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>No proof of skills or impact<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;Some companies have started focusing more on skills than on degrees. But <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/help-linkedin-skills-endorsements-mess\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">saying you have a skill<\/a> without sharing proof and impact is a red flag to recruiters that you may be exaggerating your background.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The good news is that it\u2019s easy to give proof of your skills. On your profile, describe the accomplishments and impact you\u2019ve delivered using your most marketable skills. This is what really gets recruiters\u2019 attention.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Not expressing your interest<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;You can express interest in many ways: The most overt approach is to activate the <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/should-you-display-opentowork-on-your-linkedin-profile\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">#OpenToWork frame<\/a> on your profile photo. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, a new LinkedIn feature lets you tell companies you\u2019re interested. Visit the About section of the company\u2019s page. Scroll to \u201cInterested in working with us in the future?\u201d and click \u201cI\u2019m interested.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/does-my-linkedin-profile-really-need-a-photo\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"889\">LinkedIn will privately share your profile<\/a> with the company\u2019s recruiters for up to a year.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Inconsistent data<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Job titles and dates, and other data, must be consistent between <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/executive-resume-linkedin-profile-biography-whats-the-difference\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">your resume and LinkedIn profile<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;In the past, no one expected LinkedIn profiles to be perfect, but that has changed.
