So you&#8217;ve probably done these things right:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/executive-job-search-research-your-target-employers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Researched your target employers<\/a> to align your value proposition with what those employers need<\/li><li>Built an enticing <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/the-new-10-step-executive-personal-branding-worksheet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">personal branding<\/a> that generates chemistry for you<\/li><li>Built a &#8220;clean&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/does-your-online-presence-scream-dont-hire-me\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">online presence<\/a> with diverse search results for &#8220;your name&#8221;<\/li><li>Created a solid <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-network-into-executive-job\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">networking strategy<\/a> that keeps you connected to people who can help you meet your career goals<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Employers have scrutinized you and vetted you enough to take on the expense and effort of moving you into the interview process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So far, so good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s an all too typical scenario. You have an interview or two and:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>You&#8217;re not called back for another,<\/li><li>You hear that they&#8217;ve chosen another candidate or<\/li><li>You don&#8217;t hear again from them.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What&#8217;s happening here? Why aren&#8217;t you landing the job?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Something must be happening during or after interviews that&#8217;s keeping you from <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/best-ways-to-answer-what-is-your-greatest-weakness-in-a-job-interview\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"849\">landing the job<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It could be one of these things:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>You don&#8217;t perform well in interviews<\/li><li>They&#8217;ve found a better qualified candidate<\/li><li>Your references are bad-mouthing you<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>How do you fix these things before interviewing at another one of your target companies?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>You can fix the first problem by <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/prepare-to-ace-brand-your-c-level-executive-job-interview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">prepping better for interviews<\/a>.<\/li><li>You can&#8217;t do anything about the second problem. But, if they inform you of this, you can let them know that you&#8217;d like them to keep you in mind if something else that&#8217;s a good fit for you opens up. Do this in a <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/thank-you-notes-executive-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">thank you note<\/a>.<\/li><li>You can also do something about the third problem.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>First, understand this. Hesitant, evasive or annoyed responses are other things that can turn off a potential employer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What some references actually said about real candidates<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To give you an idea of what may be happening to you, here are some excerpts from actual professional reference checking interviews conducted by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allisontaylor.com\/default.asp?PartnerID=1161110\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Allison &amp; Taylor<\/a> staff:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Could you fully describe the circumstances and reason for the separation?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShe was fired.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShe was let go \u2013 she didn\u2019t do her part as expected.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe was let go \u2026 he didn\u2019t follow safety standards and guidelines.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI fired him! He and his buddy had some illegal things going.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShe had been written up and she walked out on work \u2026 because she was upset.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It was a rather delicate and awkward situation. You should call her other past employers. I made the mistake of not doing that.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;She was terminated in an investigation\u2026&#8221; The reference then got very quiet and said he had General Council in his office and couldn&#8217;t say anything more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c Hold on, I will get the legal file to see what I can say \u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Comments ranking a candidate&#8217;s skills on a scale of 1-5:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Oral Communications: &#8220;Can I give a negative number?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interpersonal Relations: &#8220;He had a problem with a few of the people. I should have ended the relationship just after he started.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Productivity: &#8220;Is there a rating less than inadequate?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Decision Making: &#8220;He couldn&#8217;t make a decision if his life depended on it.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Managerial Skills: &#8220;He couldn&#8217;t manage a group of <em>children<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Financial Skills: &#8220;That&#8217;s why our company had a major layoff &#8211; we left her in charge of the finances!&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to do if your ex-boss is bad-mouthing you<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You can&#8217;t keep potential employers from contacting your ex-employers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But once you know what kinds of things they&#8217;re saying about you, you&#8217;ll have the information you need to deal with the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be upfront with potential employers. Fully disclose whatever happened (that you either knew about before or you&#8217;ve found out about through your reference checks). Do it before they make the call to your ex-boss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have glowing references for the most part and just one or two negative ones, people will likely pay more attention to the good feedback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can try talking to your former boss, to see if you can convince her or him not to say those negative things about you, because it&#8217;s keeping you from finding a new job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can try going to HR at the former employers to see if they&#8217;ll speak to your ex-boss and put a stop to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Especially if they&#8217;re saying things about you that are factually inaccurate, you need to try to get them to stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the measures above fail, you may need to send a cease-and-desist letter.
