I&#8217;m almost done watching the entire series.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the beginning of each show, each of the 4 chef contestants introduces themselves, giving what amounts to a brief personal brand statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I can&#8217;t help but notice that almost every chef says one or more of the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>I&#8217;m a force to be reckoned with<\/li><li>I&#8217;m a badass<\/li><li>I&#8217;m in it to win it<\/li><li>My cooking style is eclectic<\/li><li>My cooking style is based on the freshest ingredients<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>They get bogged down in tired clich\u00e9s. With so much overuse, these phrases don&#8217;t generate interest (more likely they generate boredom) and don&#8217;t help to distinguish one person from another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.cambridge.org\/us\/dictionary\/english\/cliche\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">definition of a clich\u00e9<\/a> is: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>&#8220;A saying or remark that is very often made and is therefore not original and not interesting.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Similarly, resumes suffer when they&#8217;re bogged down with typical resume clich\u00e9s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Imagine the impact on recruiters and other hiring professionals when they see the same bland phrases show up in resumes over and over again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These clich\u00e9s get in the way of real and useful information about you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Information that will make them interested in you and lead them to put you in the running.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And people often place these clich\u00e9s at the top of their resumes, in the summary section. The section that people see first and is designed to capture attention and really &#8220;sell&#8221; you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep in mind that, along with the <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/executive-resume-ats-applicant-tracking-systems-need-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS)<\/a> parsing your resume for specific keywords, real people will be reading your resume. Make your <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/is-your-executive-resume-an-interesting-read\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">resume an interesting read<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the keywords that ATS are looking for will NOT be resume clich\u00e9s like the ones listed below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">10 Dull Resume Clich\u00e9s That Dilute Your Personal Brand<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many more meaningless clich\u00e9s to avoid than the 10 below. Basically, try to stay clear of the phrases you&#8217;ve seen and heard over and over again. Phrases that do nothing to generate chemistry or interest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I originally wrote this article about 10 years ago. I didn&#8217;t need to update these resume clich\u00e9s because, sadly, they still show up in abundance in resumes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Responsible for . . .<\/li><li>Demonstrated success at . . .<\/li><li>Proven track record of success<\/li><li>Forward-thinking<\/li><li>Team leader\/team player<\/li><li>Superior (or excellent) communication skills<\/li><li>Seasoned professional<\/li><li>Results-oriented\/results-driven professional<\/li><li>Met or exceeded expectations<\/li><li>Bottom line-oriented<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">So why do job seekers keep using these ineffectual resume clich\u00e9s?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It could be that they see these phrases on <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/whats-wrong-with-copying-an-executive-brand-resume-sample\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"372\">resume samples<\/a> online or on other job seekers&#8217; resumes and figure &#8220;that&#8217;s what&#8217;s supposed to go on a resume.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You&#8217;re not the same as the candidates competing against you, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sameness won&#8217;t sell you. Differentiation will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Besides, space is limited in resumes. You want to <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/whats-the-best-executive-resume-format-and-length\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">keep your resume to a reasonable length<\/a>. Pinpoint better, more specific words that really say something and speak to your uniqueness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You don&#8217;t need to pad the actions you took that resulted in benefits to your employer with vague fluff. Cut to the chase and simply describe the actions and results outright.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Capture and hold readers&#8217; attention. Vibrantly showcase your unique combination of good-fit qualities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Find Better Words To Use<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of anemic, non-descriptive phrases use more descriptive words and strong action words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For instance, instead of &#8220;responsible for&#8221;, use one of the 185 resume power verbs in an article by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themuse.com\/advice\/185-powerful-verbs-that-will-make-your-resume-awesome\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Muse<\/a>, such as: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Administered<\/li><li>Charted<\/li><li>Controlled<\/li><li>Designed<\/li><li>Devised<\/li><li>Engineered<\/li><li>Organized<\/li><li>Programmed<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of using &#8220;led&#8221; (if you envisioned and brought a project to life), try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Created<\/li><li>Formalized<\/li><li>Formulated<\/li><li>Founded<\/li><li>Introduced<\/li><li>Launched<\/li><li>Pioneered<\/li><li>Spearheaded<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>And instead of &#8220;increased (if you built sales, revenue or customer satisfaction), use these strong action verbs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Accelerated<\/li><li>Advanced<\/li><li>Amplified<\/li><li>Boosted<\/li><li>Capitalized<\/li><li>Delivered<\/li><li>Enhanced<\/li><li>Expanded<\/li><li>Expedited<\/li><li>Generated<\/li><li>Lifted<\/li><li>Maximized<\/li><li>Outpaced<\/li><li>Stimulated<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Combine strong words and phrases with storytelling to help those assessing you see how you operate, and envision you on the job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Use the <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-c-a-r-storytelling-gives-executive-resume-branding-zing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CARs (Challenge &#8211; Actions &#8211; Results)<\/a> or STARs (Situation &#8211; Tasks &#8211; Actions &#8211; Results) method to develop career success stories. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>More About Executive Resumes<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-write-an-irresistible-c-level-executive-resume-in-10-steps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">How to Write An Irresistible Executive Resume in 10 Steps<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/elevate-your-executive-resume-from-bland-to-brand\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Elevate Your Executive Resume From Bland to BRAND<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve been re-watching the Food Network&#8217;s Chopped, a cooking competition show.
