{"id":2093,"date":"2010-11-30T08:40:55","date_gmt":"2010-11-30T12:40:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/?p=2093"},"modified":"2025-04-24T06:33:13","modified_gmt":"2025-04-24T10:33:13","slug":"taking-a-holiday-vacation-from-executive-job-search","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/taking-a-holiday-vacation-from-executive-job-search\/","title":{"rendered":"Taking a Holiday Vacation From Executive Job Search?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It may sound like an okay thing to do, and you may need a break, but don\u2019t assume that nothing is happening in the job search landscape during December, or that there\u2019s not much you can do to accelerate your search right now.<\/p>\n<p>Understand that job seekers need to be active in November and December to be January hires. December hires needed to be actively searching in October and November. And recruiters are working now to identify candidates for January.<\/p>\n<p>Take advantage of the fact that there\u2019s less competition right now \u2013 so many others will put their <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/deftly-organize-and-track-your-executive-job-search\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"59\">job search<\/a> on hold until the first of the year. Fewer executive candidates are jockeying to position themselves in front of hiring decision makers and vying for their attention. Your network and new contacts are probably not overwhelmed by requests right now, and you have the opportunity to make inroads.<\/p>\n<p>On one of the LinkedIn Group I belong to \u2013 comprised of top careers industry professionals \u2013 the manager posed this question recently:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em>Most unemployed people give up seeking jobs\/opportunities between Thanksgiving and New Years. What advice would you give to job seekers this holiday season?<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Members\u2019 responses included plenty of good advice:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Volunteer your time at organizations that need your expertise, and practice give-to-get networking \u2013 you may be able to\u00a0connect with people who can give you some solid leads.<\/li>\n<li>Reevaluate and rework your career\/job search goals.<\/li>\n<li>Seek out new contacts.<\/li>\n<li>Touch base with your existing network. Thank them for leads and the help they&#8217;ve provided. Share season&#8217;s greetings. Send out hand-addressed holiday cards with meaningful hand-written messages.<\/li>\n<li>Take time to &#8220;hide out&#8221; and reflect, but don&#8217;t give up on <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/30-key-executive-job-search-faqs\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"364\">job search<\/a> entirely.<\/li>\n<li>Attend formal and informal networking events, like holiday parties.<\/li>\n<li>Attend job search workshops at your local Career Center.<\/li>\n<li>Refine your networking skills. See my post, <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-build-a-powerful-executive-network\/\">How to Build a Powerful Executive Network<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Always carry business cards that include contact information, your title, your brief brand tagline or ROI value promise and your personal website address, LinkedIn URL, Google Profile URL or VisualCV URL.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>My friend and colleague, John Suarez, summed it up so well in his response:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>&#8220;Let&#8217;s think about this&#8230;the social calendar gets heavily booked. That means more opportunities to talk to more people in socially driven settings about a targeted and self-directed <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/is-holiday-job-search-a-waste-of-time\/\">job search.<\/a> Sounds like a networker&#8217;s paradise. Put your santa hat on and consume as many conversational calories as you can.&#8221;<\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em><strong>Keep busy with that list of suggestions, but also take the time to:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2192 <\/strong>Update your resume, LinkedIn profile and other career marketing communications. Look back at the past year and make notes on contributions and achievements, new skill sets, professional development, career advancements, etc.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2192 <\/strong>Explore LinkedIn \u2013\u00a0learn how much it can do for you and get more involved. If you slapped up a perfunctory profile months or years ago and forgot about it, go back and make your profile 100% complete, keyword-rich, and branded. Identify the biggest challenges facing them right now that you are uniquely qualified to help them overcome.
