He wanted them in his resume. I explained why he shouldn\u2019t and couldn\u2019t &#8220;re-use&#8221; content in my samples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another potential client had actually swiped an entire paragraph verbatim from one of my samples. You can imagine my shock when I reviewed his existing resume, before our initial chat. I set him straight about his mistake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This has happened only a few times that I\u2019m aware of. But I\u2019m sure lots of people are stealing the content from my samples. For the most part, they have the sense not to parade it in front of me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What&#8217;s Wrong with Copying an Executive Resume Sample?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/5-things-you-probably-dont-know-about-executive-resumes-and-job-search\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"380\">probably know that thousands of good resume<\/a> samples are readily available online. And thousands of resume books are full of thousands more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Strategic <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/7-things-i-learned-about-resume-writing-that-changed-everything\/\">resume writing is always changing<\/a> to meet the needs of people assessing candidates, and the job seekers themselves. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So it\u2019s a good idea to take a look at up-to-date samples by top resume writers, before attempting to write your own. This helps you get a handle on new trends in formatting and how to pull a good one together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Look, but don&#8217;t copy from a sample<\/strong>.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Although you should take a look at <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/4-reasons-you-cant-write-your-own-executive-resume\/\">executive resume<\/a> samples, don&#8217;t be tempted to copy from them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One big reason is personal branding. A great resume uniquely brands that specific job seeker. What you read in a sample may sort of sound like you, but it isn\u2019t really you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t you want hiring decision makers to clearly know what differentiates you from competing candidates, and why your ROI makes you the best <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/does-your-executive-resume-position-you-as-the-best-hiring-choice\/\">hiring choice<\/a>? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can only do that by <a data-wpil-monitor-id=\"376\" href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/what-not-to-put-in-your-c-level-executive-resume\/\">building your resume<\/a> with your own unique brand messaging showcasing your own unique combination of key attributes, expertise, skill sets, drivers and passions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The achievements on a sample couldn\u2019t possibly be the same as yours. The situations, people involved, metrics and facts are all different . . . even if only slightly different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your own approach to solving the problems that led to your achievements provide evidence to support your executive brand promise. Don\u2019t settle for generic achievement statements that sound good, but aren\u2019t really authentic for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What a uniquely-yours resume does better than any sample ever could<\/strong>.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Your resume needs to target specific employers and a specific kind of job, based on your <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/best-ways-and-places-to-research-your-target-employers\/\">research uncovering good-fit companies<\/a> and the challenges facing them right now. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is how you create <a data-wpil-monitor-id=\"377\" href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/ignore-the-hype-what-authentic-personal-branding-is-and-is-not\/\">branded personal marketing<\/a> communications that will resonate with a specific target. The resume sample you liked probably didn\u2019t target the same employers you\u2019re targeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sample that\u2019s tantalizing you can\u2019t possibly align what you have to offer regarding the current needs of your target employers. You HAVE to determine the key functional areas that will be important to them, and pump your resume with your expertise and contributions in those specific areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/whats-the-best-executive-resume-format-and-length\/\">formatting of your resume<\/a> and placement of critical information depends on the compelling content you\u2019ve created and how best to position your value promise to your specific target employers. The sample <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/worried-about-age-discrimination-9-things-on-your-executive-resume-that-show-your-age\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"799\">resume may be spotlighting things<\/a> that don\u2019t at all apply to your situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A sample resume could be tied to a real person<\/strong>.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Even though the resume samples you see probably have fictionalized names and other identifying information, they\u2019re most likely real resumes written for real people who may still be actively <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/top-10-executive-job-search-posts-from-2015\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"378\">job searching<\/a>. The samples on my websites were created for actual clients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The resume sample that you copy may be in circulation right now for the same jobs you\u2019re interested in. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It may be hitting the computer screens or desks of the same people you\u2019re trying to impress. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How do you think it will impact your chances, if someone reviewing your resume realizes it\u2019s suspiciously similar to another one they have in their files? You&#8217;ll probably be kicked out of the running, and so will the originator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Don&#8217;t kid yourself. Copying from a sample is plagiarism . . . that is, stealing<\/strong>.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Using&#8221; published content is stealing and violates the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.copyright.gov\/legislation\/dmca.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Digital Millennium Copyright Act (opens in a new tab)\">Digital Millennium Copyright Act<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ANYTHING published online is automatically copyrighted to the author, whether or not it carries a copyright statement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Integrity is a critical attribute for any business leader worth her or his salt. Certainly, your ethics should dissuade you from plagiarizing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If that doesn\u2019t stop you, do you really want to risk a law suit that could possibly tarnish your online and offline brand reputation?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s just no way around it \u2014 you have to invest the time and do the work or <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/find-the-best-executive-resume-writer-for-you-wheres-the-value\/\">hire a professional<\/a> (and still expect to do some hard work), if you want to make your mark in today\u2019s <a data-wpil-monitor-id=\"379\" href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/5-toxic-beliefs-that-can-derail-your-executive-job-search\/\">executive job search<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But use your head.
