It&#8217;s becoming more embedded in the fabric of healthy career management,&nbsp;job search and personal marketing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>These people are the smart ones.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>They took the time to learn about <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/some-c-level-executives-fear-authentic-personal-branding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">authentic branding<\/a> and to leverage it in their job search and career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But for some people, branding continues to be a misunderstood and controversial topic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s probably because they don&#8217;t know what it really is and is NOT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-black-color has-text-color\"><strong>What Personal Branding is NOT<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The kinds of misinformation I was seeing back in 2007 still persist:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>&#8220;It&#8217;s a fancy word for narcissism.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;It&#8217;s shameless self-publicity.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;Branding proponents claim that success comes from self-packaging, not from personal development, hard work and intelligence.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;It&#8217;s a sham. One thing can&#8217;t define you in all contexts of your life.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;Since it&#8217;s just a passing fad, branding will be replaced by the next best thing.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;It&#8217;s the way to position yourself as an expert in your field.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;All it is is ego-stroking . . . an opportunity to brag about yourself.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;It&#8217;s merely a nifty tagline for a resume and email signature.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;It&#8217;s the way to become famous.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-black-color has-text-color\">What Personal Branding Really Is<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/hand-1915350_960_720-1.jpg\" alt=\"executive job search personal branding\" class=\"wp-image-6246 lazyload\"\/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"630\" src=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/hand-1915350_960_720-1.jpg\" alt=\"executive job search personal branding\" class=\"wp-image-6246 lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/hand-1915350_960_720-1.jpg 960w, https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/hand-1915350_960_720-1-300x197.jpg 300w, https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/hand-1915350_960_720-1-768x504.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-very-dark-gray-color has-text-color\">Personal branding is not new. It\u2019s always been with us. Even before there was a name for it, branding existed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-very-dark-gray-color has-text-color\">Smart people always assessed other people\u2019s reputation and promise of value before deciding whether to partner, hire, or do business with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tom Peters, credited with coining the phrase &#8220;personal branding&#8221;, gave his take on it in 1997 in his Fast Company article &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/28905\/brand-called-you\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Brand Called You<\/a>&#8220;:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>&#8220;We are CEOs of our own companies: Me Inc.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>You\u2019re hired, you report to work, you join a team \u2014 and you immediately start figuring out how to deliver value to the customer. Along the way, you learn stuff, develop your skills, hone your abilities, move from project to project.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>And if you\u2019re really smart, you figure out how to distinguish yourself from all the other very smart people walking around with $1,500 suits, high-powered laptops, and well-polished resumes. Along the way, if you\u2019re really smart, you figure out what it takes to create a distinctive role for yourself \u2014 you create a message and a strategy to promote the brand called You.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">You already have a brand. Your brand is your reputation.<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To get a handle on your brand, you&#8217;ll need to do some work. You need to dig down to define the unique set of strengths, personal attributes and drivers that differentiate you from your peers and competitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Along with introspection, the true measure of your brand comes from eliciting and assimilating feedback from those who know you best. They already know what your brand is about. They know what you\u2019re the \u201cgo to\u201d person for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, the branding process includes identifying your target audience so that your brand positioning messaging will resonate with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong><em>Think of personal branding as educating people and your target employers about the unique value you offer them.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;ve brought this all together in my <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/the-new-10-step-executive-personal-branding-worksheet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Personal Branding Worksheet<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Branding isn\u2019t just about marketing yourself.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The branding process looks at your vision, purpose, values and passions. Therefore, <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/what-is-personal-branding-do-i-need-a-personal-brand-for-job-search\/\">branding is also a personal development<\/a> tool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With this introspection comes a keener understanding of what kind of work is a best fit for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Branding helps you position yourself to move toward career fulfillment.<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Branding helps generate chemistry for you in your LinkedIn profile, executive resume, biography, cover letter, and other personal marketing materials. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It helps people understand what you\u2019re like to work with and how you make things happen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It helps them understand what you have to offer that no one else does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After you\u2019ve defined what differentiates you and pulled together your brand, you&#8217;ll need a <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/blog-comments-part-of-your-online-executive-brand-communications-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">brand communications<\/a> strategy. With this, you&#8217;ll consistently communicate your unique promise of value to your target audience across multiple channels, online and offline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s the beauty part: Your brand makes it easier for recruiters and hiring decision makers to assess you. In other words, it helps them decide if you\u2019re a good fit for their organization, and whether to hire you or do business with you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The personal branding process can help you with all these things:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Find career fulfillment in a job that&#8217;s a good fit for both you and the employer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Communicate better to employers and others why you\u2019re the best hiring choice.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make employers&#8217; hiring decision easier.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Get you into your next great-fit gig faster.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>So isn\u2019t it worth the effort?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Executive job search is a complex endeavor and often comes with setbacks, rejections and challenges that can drain your self-confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My clients have told me that doing the personal branding work has been an uplifting and energizing experience.
