The last thing you want to do is make a major resume writing mistake, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You want to make an excellent first impression. You want your inbox to be flooded with requests for interviews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do you think&nbsp;one of these <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/7-things-i-learned-about-resume-writing-that-changed-everything\/\">resume mistakes is the worst thing<\/a> you can do?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Wrong formatting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Not enough experience for the job<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Not enough advanced education<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Leading with a self-serving objective statement<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Employment gaps that send up red flags<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Too many pages<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>While these (and others) may all be blunders that can sabotage your chances, the biggest mistake any executive job seeker can make with their resume \u2013 or <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/linkedin-personal-branding-executive-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LinkedIn profile<\/a>, other online profiles, or any career marketing materials \u2013 is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>NO CLEAR TARGETING<\/strong> <strong>\u2013 That is, not determining at the start of your job search (and before writing your resume) which companies and types of jobs within them are a mutual good fit.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Think about it. The purpose of a resume is to qualify you as a potential candidate \u2013 in skill sets, experience and personal character \u2013 and to therefore land interviews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your resume needs to make people reading it feel compelled to want to meet you and learn more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recruiters and hiring decision makers assessing you through your resume (or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/megguiseppi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LinkedIn profile<\/a>, cover letter, etc.) don\u2019t have time to sift through irrelevant information. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They need to quickly and clearly see your ROI to the company. The hiring process is costly to them. They want to avoid hiring people who won&#8217;t be right for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How can you write about what makes you a good fit for a company, if you <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>haven\u2019t focused your search on specific employers, <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>don\u2019t know what challenges they\u2019re facing right now that you&#8217;re qualified to help them fix, and <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>can\u2019t align your qualifications with how you will help them meet those pressing needs?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>And how can you <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/the-new-10-step-executive-personal-branding-worksheet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">define your personal brand<\/a> if you don\u2019t know your target audience? You won&#8217;t be able to create brand messaging that will resonate with anyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nothing in your resume should be arbitrary. Everything in it needs to position you as the right fit for the employers reading it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your resume needs to speak to and market your promise of value to specific employers, so that they can picture you there, positively impacting the company. Many companies offer incentives to their employees to bring in good hires. It saves them money in the costly hiring process. The referring employee also gets something. And you may get a job. Everyone wins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So let&#8217;s say someone at a company you want to work for has connected you with a hiring decision maker there. You send them your un-targeted, all-over-the-place resume. Because it doesn&#8217;t clearly show that you have the experience and expertise to help them with certain problems, they question your fit for the job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your chances of being hired could come to a screeching halt. And you could make the referring employee look bad in their employer&#8217;s eyes. Plus you could turn that employee against you and lose a valuable connection within a <a data-wpil-monitor-id=\"533\" href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/best-ways-and-places-to-research-your-target-employers\/\">company you want to work<\/a> for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whenever your <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/dont-play-it-too-safe-with-your-executive-resume\/\">resume comes into play<\/a> in the hiring process, it needs to speak volumes to the employer about how you&#8217;re going to help them meet current challenges and impact bottom line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to get a handle on targeting and avoid that big resume writing mistake<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Compile a list of 15-20 (or more) target companies that look like a good fit for both you and them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/best-ways-and-places-to-research-your-target-employers\/\">Research each company<\/a> and your industry.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Look for well-written job descriptions they have posted for the kind of position you want, even if the geographical location isn\u2019t right for you.
