After all, you can&#8217;t possibly stay in touch with all of them if you have more than 500 connections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But I advise not limiting your number of LinkedIn connections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The more people you\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-many-linkedin-connections-are-good-for-executive-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">connected with on LinkedIn<\/a>, the wider you\u2019ve cast your net for opportunities, the more people you\u2019re staying top-of-mind with . . .&nbsp;<em>thus the more likely more good-fit opportunities will come your way.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, the more connections you have, the more people who are likely to share or like or comment on anything you publish on LinkedIn \u2013 updates, articles, comments, etc. \u2013 therefore spreading the word about your&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/the-new-10-step-executive-personal-branding-worksheet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">personal brand&nbsp;and unique value<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, once you reach the 500+ connections mark, <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/should-you-display-opentowork-on-your-linkedin-profile\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"632\">LinkedIn says your profile<\/a> will rank higher in search results, making you more visible and findable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do a lot of people reach out to you on LinkedIn?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Chances are that many in your network are following my above guidelines already. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They continuously work their network and they&#8217;ve stayed in touch with you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, not everyone in your network or those who want to get into your network, do it well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of the <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/7-things-successful-executive-job-seekers-know\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"810\">executive job seekers<\/a> I speak with have expressed annoyance that they&#8217;re constantly tapped for advice . . . for just a few minutes of their time . . . for a lead . . . or for a favor by people they don&#8217;t know, or only know of through several degrees of separation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/one-skill-every-job-seeker-should-have\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"812\">job seekers<\/a> are in demand. They&#8217;re often at, or very near, the top of the totem pole at their companies \u2013 the key decision makers. The ones other job seekers (and other people) are trying to network their way towards. A few minutes of their time is like gold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because they&#8217;re in such demand, they often hesitate getting involved with social networking and <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/does-your-online-presence-scream-dont-hire-me\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">building an online presence<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A number of my clients have said that, although they know they have to have a presence and network on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/megguiseppi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LinkedIn<\/a>, they don\u2019t want to open themselves to more requests for their precious time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">I also get a lot of LinkedIn requests<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m in a similar situation. I sometimes get bombarded with requests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;ve been around for about <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">25 years in the careers industry<\/a> and have a fairly strong presence on LinkedIn and various other social media. I&#8217;ve gotten to be somewhat well-known.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People I don&#8217;t know personally or professionally, never spoke with or communicated with, or never heard of at all, reach out to me all the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All too often, they want something from me, so I&#8217;ve become selective about how I respond. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In some instances I don&#8217;t respond at all<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>With some I&#8217;ll gently explain that I\u2019m not able to respond to all the requests I get<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>With some I&#8217;m all on board and eager to get to know the person, help them if I can or collaborate with them in ways they&#8217;ve suggested.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t get me wrong. I have happily given advice or mentored or collaborated with many people over the years, just as others have done for me. But I can\u2019t satisfy all requests, or even spare 15 minutes to everyone who asks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How NOT to Build Your Network on LinkedIn with Me<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are the kinds of first approaches that completely turn me off:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-connect-on-linkedin-with-people-you-dont-know-and-get-action\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">invitation to connect on LinkedIn<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>&#8220;I\u2019d like to add you to my professional <a data-wpil-monitor-id=\"227\" href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-network-on-linkedin-like-a-pro\/\">network on LinkedIn&#8221;<\/a> \u2013 using the thoughtless default message LinkedIn provides, and nothing else . . . no personalized message.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;Will you take a look at my profile and let me know what you think of it?&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/25-tips-to-write-an-executive-resume-for-todays-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">My resume isn&#8217;t working<\/a>. I attached it here. Will you tell me what I&#8217;m doing wrong?&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;I&#8217;m looking for an XYZ role in the (fill in the blank) industry. Can you introduce me to anyone who can help me?&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;I see that you&#8217;re a <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/build-winning-relationships-with-executive-recruiters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recruiter<\/a>. Can you help me find a job?&#8221; (I&#8217;m not a recruiter and nothing on my profile says that I am.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Via LinkedIn InMails from others in the careers industry with whom I\u2019ve never communicated, and often don&#8217;t know at all:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Please help me promote my new book (or product).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Can we set up a time to talk about how you built your business using <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-your-social-media-use-can-sabotage-your-executive-job-search\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"811\">social media<\/a>?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I\u2019m just starting my own career services business. Can you tell me how you did it?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where did they go wrong?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Their first communication was a request for a favor \u2013 to someone they don&#8217;t know at all, or just barely know. They didn&#8217;t practice <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-network-into-the-goldmine-of-hidden-executive-jobs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8220;give to get&#8221; networking<\/a>. They didn\u2019t give me a reason for connecting with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe they only wanted that one favor and weren&#8217;t interested in long term networking with me. But I could be setting myself up for an endless one-sided relationship, with someone constantly &#8220;picking my brain&#8221;, and offering me nothing in return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s another thing that turns me off to any kind of request:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unless it&#8217;s someone I already know well or know of, I&#8217;ll jump right to their <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-c-a-r-storytelling-gives-executive-resume-branding-zing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LinkedIn profile<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If their profile is woefully incomplete and tells me very little about them, I&#8217;ll probably pass on whatever they&#8217;re asking of me. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is especially true when someone claims to be a LinkedIn expert. How can they profess to know all about LinkedIn when they haven&#8217;t bothered to build a fully fleshed out profile?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to make a positive connection with your network on LinkedIn<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t just tell me how I can help you. Tell me how we can help each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Give me a reason to want to connect with you, get to know you and help you. Tell me how you know about me, why you want to connect with me and why <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-network-better\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cultivating a relationship with you<\/a> might be beneficial for me, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you reach out to me, or anyone you intend to ask a favor of, don\u2019t make your first communication the request for that favor. Build the relationship a bit before you expect something in return. Healthy networking requires balance and reciprocity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, of course, don&#8217;t expect to do well with networking on LinkedIn if you don&#8217;t have much of a profile.
