What if you\u2019re NOT an expert?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of us are talented in various ways, and very good at doing some things, but we\u2019re not experts at them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We toss around the word &#8220;expert&#8221; a little too easily. I call other people &#8220;experts&#8221; and I\u2019ve been called an expert, but I don\u2019t call myself one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I don\u2019t think there are nearly as many true experts as people who claim to be, or who are labeled as such.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet so-called personal branding &#8220;experts&#8221; often tell us that in order to truly brand ourselves, we\u2019ve got to brand ourselves as experts at something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I Googled the phrase &#8220;brand yourself as an expert&#8221; \u2014&nbsp;in quotes so I\u2019d only get results on that specific phrase \u2014&nbsp;and came up with nearly 2 million results. That\u2019s a lot of people potentially handing out misguided advice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People have many <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/what-personal-branding-is-not\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">misconceptions about personal branding<\/a>. It&#8217;s not about calling yourself an expert when you really are not. And it&#8217;s NOT these things: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A fancy word for narcissism<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Shameless self-promotion and self-packaging<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A sham. One thing can\u2019t define you in all contexts of your life<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A passing fad, soon to be replaced by the next best thing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ego-stroking . . . an opportunity to brag about yourself<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A nifty tagline for a resume and email signature<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The way to become famous<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re NOT actually an expert in your field, you should never mislead people to that effect in your <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/the-personal-branding-manifesto-for-executive-job-search-part-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">brand messaging<\/a>. When push comes to shove, you won\u2019t be able to live up to the expectation . . . you risk tarnishing your reputation by boasting inflated claims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But if you really ARE an expert, branding is indeed a way to position yourself as such. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What personal branding actually is<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/personal-branding.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14507 lazyload\" width=\"838\" height=\"558\"\/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/personal-branding.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14507 lazyload\" width=\"838\" height=\"558\" srcset=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/personal-branding.png 640w, https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/personal-branding-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/personal-branding-150x100.png 150w, https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/personal-branding-600x400.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 838px) 100vw, 838px\" \/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/what-is-personal-branding-do-i-need-a-personal-brand-for-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Personal branding<\/a> is the best method to define, differentiate and communicate the unique combination of qualities and qualifications (driving strengths, areas of expertise, personal attributes, passions and values) you offer your target employers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is the combination of things that set you apart from others competing for the same kinds of jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a nutshell, branding helps you express your good-fit qualities for the companies and organizations you want to work for. It helps you zero in on the specific problems you\u2019ll help them solve . . . and does it all in a way that will resonate with them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>So if you\u2019re NOT an expert at anything, does that mean you can\u2019t brand yourself? Well of course not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Branding is about defining the value you offer the people you\u2019re trying to influence. And it comes from differentiating what you have to offer over others offering similar value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In job search, you need to identify and target employers who are a good mutual fit . . . those who need your unique combination of qualifications, skills and personal traits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may not be an expert at any one thing, but you&#8217;re probably really, really good at doing a few things that will help your target employers meet their current challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Branding is also about being authentic. Don\u2019t put yourself out there as an expert if you\u2019re not one. This increases your number of diverse and accurate results on the first few pages.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Consistency<\/strong> \u2013 Express the same personal brand message across all communications channels you decide to use.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Personal branding and the imposter syndrome<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The opposite of branding yourself as an expert is actually BEING an expert but overlooking or minimizing it because you have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/90833899\/how-to-internalize-your-success-and-beat-imposter-syndrome-once-and-for-all\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">imposter syndrome<\/a>, described by executive coach Melody Wilding: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;An experience of intellectual phoniness first described by psychologists in 1978. Today, scientists estimate that up to 82% of people face impostor syndrome, which can include feeling as if they have deceived others into believing that they are more intelligent and capable than they really are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A disconnect between a person\u2019s self-perception and reality is at the core of imposter syndrome. While you may possess skills, training, degrees, and have a track record of accomplishments, you may struggle to attribute your success to your competence. Instead, you dismiss it and credit luck, timing, charm, or even good looks. In other words, people with imposter syndrome have trouble internalizing their successes. They have difficulty owning their accomplishments and integrating those experiences into a more positive view of themselves.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>She advises doing these things to overcome imposterism:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Rewrite misconceptions about confidence<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Shift your explanatory style<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Accept compliments<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Start a brag file<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Broaden your definition of a win<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Are you ready to define and build your personal brand?
