{"id":3475,"date":"2012-06-25T08:25:45","date_gmt":"2012-06-25T12:25:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/?p=3475"},"modified":"2024-09-19T06:20:12","modified_gmt":"2024-09-19T10:20:12","slug":"4-executive-job-search-blunders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/4-executive-job-search-blunders\/","title":{"rendered":"4 Executive Job Search Blunders"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Wonder what career professionals in the thick of the job search landscape say are the worst things they see\u00a0job seekers do . . . things that are sabotaging their chances to land the jobs they want?<\/p>\n<p>My good friend Hannah Morgan (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.careersherpa.net\">Career Sherpa<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/careersherpa\">@CareerSherpa<\/a>)\u00a0recently put the question to a number of us\u00a0\u2014 career coaches, resume writers, recruiters and HR professionals\u00a0\u2014 and got a variety of answers, posted in <a href=\"http:\/\/careersherpa.net\/what-is-the-biggest-mistake-made-by-job-seekers\/\">Part One<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/careersherpa.net\/the-biggest-mistake-job-seekers-make-part-2\/\">Part Two<\/a> of &#8220;<em>What Is the Biggest Mistake Made By Job Seekers?<\/em>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>The two main themes were:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Saying the wrong things, and<\/li>\n<li>Coming across as lacking focus and a plan<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a teaser . . . three of my favorite job search folks&#8217; answers (with their Twitter handles &#8211; check out their conversations there\u00a0for more advice):<\/p>\n<p>1. Job seekers don\u2019t worry enough about their online reputation and the possibility that mistaken online identity is sabotaging their job search efforts. The solution is Defensive Googling.\u00a0 ~\u00a0Susan P. Joyce, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/JobHuntOrg\">@JobHuntOrg<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.job-hunt.org\/\">Job-Hunt.org<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.workcoachcafe.com\/\">WorkCoachCafe.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p>2. Simply asking people if they know of appropriate <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-network-into-executive-job\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"479\">job openings is not networking<\/a>! It creates awkward silence since people are not walking job boards. Most job seekers do not establish clear and tangible <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/deftly-organize-and-track-your-executive-job-search\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"62\">job search<\/a> objectives. They leave their network with no clear idea of how they can help. ~ Tim Tyrell-Smith, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/TimsStrategy\">@TimsStrategy<\/a>,\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/timsstrategy.com\/\">Tim\u2019s Strategy<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>And my own contribution:<\/em><\/p>\n<p>4.
