They include the qualifications, skills and areas of expertise you possess . . . that is, your hard skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>But the unique value you offer goes well beyond hard skills.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Employers want to get a feel for what kind of person you are. They want to get some idea of your leadership style and how you get things done . . . what you&#8217;ll be like to work with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And they want to know if you&#8217;ll fit into their <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/why-culture-fit-matters-executive-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">company culture<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You want to <a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/the-new-10-step-executive-personal-branding-worksheet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">brand yourself in your job search<\/a> marketing communications \u2212&nbsp;LinkedIn profile, resume, biography, etc. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You need to differentiate your potential value over your competition. Much more content can, and should, be pumped into your profile than your resume will allow, making LinkedIn an ideal place for storytelling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The idea is to weave together your hard and softer skills in short points that drive home the benefits you&#8217;ve brought employers in the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Storytelling helps you do that, and people relate and connect better with people through storytelling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Storytelling is not just for your resume and LinkedIn profile.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Although this article focuses on storytelling for your resume and <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/why-the-right-executive-recruiters-ignore-your-linkedin-profile-and-you\/\">LinkedIn profile<\/a>, storytelling comes into play throughout the job search process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You&#8217;ll need to develop and have at-the-ready several relevant career stories for networking and job interviews. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They should be different ones than you used in your written materials, so it&#8217;s wise to develop, say, 10-15 stories for each role and\/or employer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And these verbal career stories will naturally be longer than your written ones, although it&#8217;s best to keep them to the point and not overly long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-black-color has-text-color\"><strong>How Storytelling Makes Your Executive Resume and LinkedIn Profile Dazzle<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A storytelling device <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/find-the-best-executive-resume-writer-for-you-wheres-the-value\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"383\">resume writers<\/a> have been using for decades is the C-A-Rs approach, or Challenge \u2013 Actions \u2013 Results, also known by other acronyms such as S-T-A-Rs&nbsp;(Situation \u2013 Tasks \u2013 Actions \u2013 Results).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Choose standout contributions you\u2019ve made to past companies, in terms of business value, that will resonate with future employers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How the Challenge \u2013 Actions \u2013 Results storytelling method works<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Using the C-A-Rs method, keep your <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/think-like-an-executive-resume-branding-pro-targeting\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"275\">brand and value proposition to your target<\/a> employers in mind, while working on the following exercise:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. &nbsp;Challenge<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>What was the specific CHALLENGE (or Situation) facing the company and\/or your team? Were you\/the company facing particularly difficult odds with this situation? What were the stakes?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. &nbsp;Action(s)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>What specific ACTION(s) did you take to meet the challenge and improve things (whatever the goal was or whatever needed turning around)?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. &nbsp;Result(s)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>What were the long and short term RESULT(s) that positively impacted the company? Did you meet the goal, improve things, and\/or turn around the situation? How long did it take to see the results? Monetize the results and\/or use metrics&nbsp;whenever possible \u2013 NUMBERS TALK!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tell the story in depth, step-by-step, and don&#8217;t worry that you may be compiling a lot of information \u2013 your efforts digging deep will be well spent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After detailing the entire story, go back, consolidate, and hone the information to create concise value-driven stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>A tip<\/strong><\/em> \u2013 When writing each short (2 to 3 lines) story for your <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/experts-debate-linkedin-vs-the-executive-resume\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"111\">resume or LinkedIn profile<\/a>, lead with the big result . . .&nbsp;meaning numbers whenever possible.
