{"id":3722,"date":"2012-11-12T11:30:49","date_gmt":"2012-11-12T15:30:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/?p=3722"},"modified":"2023-10-03T06:12:55","modified_gmt":"2023-10-03T10:12:55","slug":"5-things-executive-recruiters-want-executive-job-search-best-practices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/5-things-executive-recruiters-want-executive-job-search-best-practices\/","title":{"rendered":"5 Things Executive Recruiters Want: Executive Job Search Best Practices"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Need some tips on getting the attention of, and building relationships with, <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-work-with-executive-recruiters\/\">executive recruiters<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>According to a recent survey by ExecuNet, a private membership organization supporting senior-level executive job seekers with job opportunities, resources and job search help, top recruiters identified several clearcut do&#8217;s and don&#8217;ts:<\/p>\n<h3><strong>1.\u00a0 Executive resumes need cover letters.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>70% of recruiters said they pass over a resume sent without a <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/cover-letter-debate-are-they-necessary-in-executive-job-search\/\">cover letter<\/a>. Because so many executive job seekers don\u2019t take the time to include a targeted cover letter, those who do include one are more likely to stand out.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>The purpose of the cover letter is to quickly encapsulate why you are qualified for the role, and to get someone interested enough to read your resume<\/em>,&#8221; says ExecuNet Editor-in-Chief Robyn Greenspan. &#8220;<em>This research tells us that there are so many resumes vying for recruiters&#8217; attention they are relying on a compelling cover letter to find great candidates.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>2. Limit career history on executive resumes.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The majority of recruiters want work experience on resumes limited to the most recent 15 to 20 years. Under certain circumstances, earlier work history may be relevant and should also be included, but following this rule of cutting off at about 20 years is an important one to follow.<\/p>\n<p>Relevant skills and accomplishments from early in your career can be showcased in the &#8220;profile&#8221; or &#8220;executive summary&#8221; section at the very <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/top-10-executive-resume-branding-tips\/\">top of your resume<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>3. Include a photo with your online profiles.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>62% of recruiters say\u00a0a <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/does-my-linkedin-profile-really-need-a-photo\/\">professional headshot\u00a0on online profiles<\/a>\u00a0is crucial. Although age discrimination can result, recruiters want to see what they\u2019re getting. Because most <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-find-executive-recruiters-specializing-in-your-niche\/\">recruiters will check out executive<\/a> candidates online, be sure your headshot is\u00a0current so that it\u2019s a close match with who they\u2019ll meet in person.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>4. Be prepared to give a realistic expected salary range.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The recruiters surveyed advised against asking for more than you really want. Nearly half recommended giving a salary range. Others suggested deferring an answer until mutual interest is established, and asking what the range is for a high performer in the position. It\u2019s never a good idea to bring up the salary issue first. When asked, let them know what you\u2019re making now and say you need a competitive salary.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>5. Bring information and leads, if you want to build relationships with recruiters.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Only 25% of recruiters said they\u2019d network with executives who didn\u2019t bring reciprocal value.
