{"id":3871,"date":"2013-01-28T11:30:48","date_gmt":"2013-01-28T15:30:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/?p=3871"},"modified":"2013-01-28T11:30:48","modified_gmt":"2013-01-28T15:30:48","slug":"how-much-of-my-executive-job-search-is-tax-deductible","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-much-of-my-executive-job-search-is-tax-deductible\/","title":{"rendered":"How Much of My Executive Job Search Is Tax Deductible?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"Tax by Tax Credits, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/personal-branding-and-executive-job-search-books\/executive-branding-job-search-ebook\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft lazyload\" title=\"Executive Job Search Tax Deductions\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7186\/6921643174_29ae238224_m.jpg\" alt=\"Executive Job Search Tax Deductions\" width=\"240\" height=\"240\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft lazyload\" title=\"Executive Job Search Tax Deductions\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7186\/6921643174_29ae238224_m.jpg\" alt=\"Executive Job Search Tax Deductions\" width=\"240\" height=\"240\" \/><\/noscript><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As if landing a job isn&#8217;t enough to occupy all your days and thoughts, tax time is fast approaching.<\/p>\n<p>Have you been tracking every expense involved with your job search, and keeping good records, so you can take all the deductions\u00a0you\u2019re entitled to?<\/p>\n<p>If not, plan to spend some time backtracking and pulling it all together.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.irs.gov\/pub\/irs-pdf\/p529.pdf\">IRS Publication 529 (2012)<\/a>, under Unreimbursed Employee Expenses, use the 2% limit (the amount of expense that is more than 2% of your adjusted gross income), for certain job search expenses in your present occupation, even if you do not get a new job.<\/p>\n<p>Note that this does <em>NOT<\/em> apply if:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You&#8217;re looking for a job in a new occupation,<\/li>\n<li>There was a substantial break between the ending of your last job and your looking for a new one, or<\/li>\n<li>You are looking for a job for the first time.<em>\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>Employment and outplacement agency fees.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>These are deductible unless the employer pays the agency. And, if your employer pays you back for the fees at a later year, you must include the amount you receive in your gross income up to the amount of your tax benefit in the earlier year.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Resume.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Resume preparation and mailing copies to prospective employers are deductible.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Travel and transportation.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>You can deduct travel expense if your trip is primarily to look for a new job. If you travel to an area and, while there, you look for a new job, you may be able to deduct travel expenses to and from the area.<\/p>\n<p>If you can&#8217;t deduct travel expenses to and from an area, you CAN deduct the expenses of looking for a new job while in the area.<\/p>\n<p>You can use the standard mileage rate to figure car expense (55-1\/2 cents per mile in 2012).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Disclaimer.<\/strong> Please note that I&#8217;m providing general information here.
