{"id":4089,"date":"2025-04-21T06:52:00","date_gmt":"2025-04-21T10:52:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/?p=4089"},"modified":"2025-04-21T06:50:33","modified_gmt":"2025-04-21T10:50:33","slug":"the-worlds-best-executive-resume-is-not-enough","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/the-worlds-best-executive-resume-is-not-enough\/","title":{"rendered":"The World&#8217;s Best Executive Resume Is Not Enough"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/lines-1285346_640.jpg\" alt=\"best resume\" class=\"wp-image-11040 lazyload\" style=\"width:839px;height:593px\"\/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"452\" src=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/lines-1285346_640.jpg\" alt=\"best resume\" class=\"wp-image-11040 lazyload\" style=\"width:839px;height:593px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/lines-1285346_640.jpg 640w, https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/lines-1285346_640-300x212.jpg 300w, https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/lines-1285346_640-150x106.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Even the very best executive resume is not enough<\/strong> <strong>. . .<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If it isn&#8217;t used with <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/5-toxic-beliefs-that-can-derail-your-executive-job-search\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"699\">executive job search<\/a> best practices<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And, if you haven&#8217;t backed it up with <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/social-proof-where-online-presence-meets-personal-branding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">social proof<\/a><em><strong>.<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Occasionally, I&#8217;ll see an <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/executive-resume-writers-best-kept-secret\/\">executive resume<\/a> created by the candidate that is a very good career marketing document.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They have done all these things:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Targeted their resume toward specific employers and the qualifications for specific jobs with those employers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Included value-driven metrics that show their target employers why they need to hire them<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Included the relevant keywords needed for their resume to pass through Applicant Tracking Systems<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Positioned themselves as a good-fit candidate for the kinds of jobs they&#8217;re seeking, with the employers they want to work for.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Sure, it may not showcase their <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/the-new-10-step-executive-personal-branding-worksheet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">personal brand<\/a>. And it may need some tweaking here and there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, in my opinion, it should generate SOME response when put into action properly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet they&#8217;re getting ZERO TO LITTLE RESPONSE to their resume.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When I ask them how they&#8217;re using the resume, they say they&#8217;ve responded to hundreds of <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/use-job-boards-for-research-not-to-find-jobs\/\">job postings on various job boards<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is their only job search activity, or where they&#8217;re spending the vast majority of their time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They spends dizzying hours every day perusing job listings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They can\u2019t figure out why very little is happening. After all, they&#8217;re <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/executive-job-search-preparation-is-hard-work-accept-it\/\">working hard at job search<\/a>. They&#8217;re using the internet. They feel they&#8217;ve embraced the latest and best job search strategies for the digital age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once I do a quick Google search of \u201c<em>their name<\/em>\u201d, I know what\u2019s wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Job seekers with even the very best executive resume may not succeed if . . .<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>They&#8217;re <\/em><\/strong><em><strong>invisible online:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>They have <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/deadly-linkedin-mistake-anemic-incomplete-profile\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"698\">no LinkedIn profile<\/a>, or a bare-bones one.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They have little to no activity on LinkedIn (<a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/smart-personal-branding-posting-linkedin-updates-vs-updating-your-linkedin-profile\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">posting comments, updates and articles<\/a>, and reacting to others&#8217; posts).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There are no meaningful, relevant web pages associated with their name.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They have little to no social <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/3-ways-to-make-your-online-networking-count\/\">networking<\/a> or social media presence.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In other words, nothing of value about them will appear in a search of &#8220;their name&#8221; by people assessing them as a candidate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>No wonder their job search is stuck in neutral.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They&#8217;re spending 100% of their time (or close to it) on a method that often yields a low success rate in landing a job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To get anywhere, they\u2019ll need to create a <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/personal-branding-and-executive-job-search-books\/executive-branding-job-search-ebook\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">job search strategy<\/a> that relies much less on using job boards. They need to devote most of their efforts to methods that yield the best results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Armed with a <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-write-an-irresistible-c-level-executive-resume-in-10-steps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">branded, targeted resume<\/a>, here\u2019s what <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/7-things-successful-executive-job-seekers-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">savvy executive job seekers<\/a> know and do:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-black-color has-text-color\"><strong>1. &nbsp;Networking gets the job!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/LinkedIn-network.jpg\" alt=\"job search networking\" class=\"wp-image-19221 lazyload\" style=\"width:839px;height:auto\"\/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"398\" src=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/LinkedIn-network.jpg\" alt=\"job search networking\" class=\"wp-image-19221 lazyload\" style=\"width:839px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/LinkedIn-network.jpg 640w, https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/LinkedIn-network-300x187.jpg 300w, https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/LinkedIn-network-150x93.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Your mission is to network your way into the companies you\u2019ve <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/toxic-executive-job-search-beliefs-no-target-employers\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"701\">targeted your resume<\/a> toward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Networking is the only way to tap into the <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-network-into-the-goldmine-of-hidden-executive-jobs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hidden job market<\/a>. These are jobs (especially at the <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/who-is-an-executive\/\">c-suite and other top executive levels<\/a>) that are never advertised. You will have to become at least somewhat known at the company to be considered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Work on circumventing the gatekeepers (for as long as possible). Connect directly with key hiring decision makers where they hang out online and offline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, connect with employees at almost any professional level at those companies, to become a known entity there. One of the best ways to land a job is through <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/networking-to-referral-to-hire-best-way-to-land-executive-job\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">referral from an insider<\/a> at the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Turn back to the <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/worksheets-personal-branding-and-executive-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">company and industry research<\/a> you did. Determine how to align your value-add with your target companies\u2019 needs and get that info into your resume.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clearly show in your resume that you have what they need, to help them meet current pressing needs and solve current challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Some ways to network well<\/strong>:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Identify key decision makers and employees at your <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/7-tips-to-build-your-executive-job-search-target-companies-list\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">target companies<\/a>. LinkedIn (company) Pages and each company\u2019s website will help.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Look at all your contacts to see if anyone has a <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/3-reasons-i-wont-connect-with-you-on-linkedin\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"702\">connection<\/a> to your target companies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ask for introductions to those key decision makers so you can do <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/guide-to-informational-interviews-for-executive-job-search\/\">informational interviews<\/a> with them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Leverage <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-find-and-connect-with-the-right-recruiters-on-linkedin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LinkedIn to network towards making first degree connections<\/a> with those key hiring decision makers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Participate in <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/linkedin-and-personal-branding-showcase-subject-matter-expertise-linkedin-groups\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LinkedIn Groups<\/a>, especially those Groups the hiring decision makers belong to.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Embrace the other social media platforms heavily used by recruiters and hiring professionals \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-use-twitter-for-personal-branding-and-executive-job-search-part-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Twitter<\/a>, Instagram, Facebook, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cultivate relationships with several <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-find-executive-recruiters-specializing-in-your-niche\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recruiters specializing in your niche<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Set up Google Alerts to notify you when relevant industry and company news is posted online.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-black-color has-text-color\"><strong>2. &nbsp;Build a diverse, vibrant online presence<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/online-branding.jpg\" alt=\"online presence for job search\" class=\"wp-image-20618 lazyload\" style=\"width:840px;height:auto\"\/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" src=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/online-branding.jpg\" alt=\"online presence for job search\" class=\"wp-image-20618 lazyload\" style=\"width:840px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/online-branding.jpg 640w, https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/online-branding-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/online-branding-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/online-branding-600x400.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The various people who will be assessing you as a candidate want to find diverse information about you online. They will favor candidates with a <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/does-your-online-presence-scream-dont-hire-me\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">strong online footprint<\/a> over those without one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think about what they&#8217;re tasked with doing. They need to find out as much as they can about candidates, before they bring them into the interview process, which is costly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Support your personal brand and good-fit candidacy, and make yourself easy to find online. Provide social proof that corroborates the claims you\u2019ve made in your resume and elsewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/7-ways-to-contaminate-your-personal-brand-and-doom-your-executive-job-search\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"700\">ways to build your online presence<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you\u2019re not on LinkedIn, get to work <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/linkedin-personal-branding-executive-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">creating a strong profile<\/a> with plenty of content.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make sure your LinkedIn profile reinforces your brand and contains <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/keywords-in-job-search-how-important-are-they\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the right keywords<\/a>, in the right places, to help you get found.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make a habit of spending a little time each day on LinkedIn posting updates and commenting on or reacting to other people&#8217;s posts. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/the-value-of-blogging-your-personal-brand-on-linkedin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LinkedIn\u2019s publishing platform<\/a> to write articles supporting your subject matter expertise.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Post regularly to your other social media accounts \u2013 Twitter, Facebook, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Set up a YouTube account and <a href=\"https:\/\/xi117.isrefer.com\/go\/jobsearch\/ecbrand\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">add video<\/a> and other visuals to your social media activity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Create an Amazon (or other online bookseller) profile and write book reviews.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/why-you-need-to-self-google-once-a-week\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Self-Google regularly<\/a> to monitor the results people assessing you will find when they Google your name.
