They&#8217;ll help you land interviews with your target employers, pre-qualify you for top compensation and land you faster in your next gig.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More and more online resume and <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-write-a-dazzling-linkedin-summary\/\">LinkedIn writing<\/a> services crop up all the time. <a data-wpil-monitor-id=\"396\" href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/one-skill-every-job-seeker-should-have\/\">Job seekers<\/a> have a real dilemma sifting through the sea of choices and figuring out which provider to work with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s confounding, to say the least. How are you supposed to know which ones are legitimate and where you\u2019ll get the best value for your investment?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why not just use a resume template?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Should you speed the process by buying a \u201cwrite your own\u201d template?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You could. You&#8217;ll save money and it may work for you, if you truly understand <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/7-things-i-learned-about-resume-writing-that-changed-everything\/\">resume writing<\/a> strategy and what information to include and NOT include. And, among other things, if you know how to <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/the-new-10-step-executive-personal-branding-worksheet\/\">define your personal brand<\/a> and get that into <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/what-not-to-put-in-your-c-level-executive-resume\/\">your resume<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But I don\u2019t advise it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll probably end up frustrated and out a chunk of money that could have been invested in working with a superior provider. It\u2019s a rare executive who knows <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/4-reasons-you-cant-write-your-own-executive-resume\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">how to write a standout resume and LinkedIn profile<\/a>&nbsp;for today\u2019s job market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please note as you read this 3-part series that for brevity, I most often refer to resumes and resume writing. But all of this also applies to&nbsp;LinkedIn <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/does-my-linkedin-profile-really-need-a-photo\/\">profile<\/a> creation and writing, biographies and other job search materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Executive resume and LinkedIn profile writers get a lot of bad press.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>People can be distrustful of us and perhaps with good reason. So much misinformation about what we do (or don\u2019t do) is floating around out there by people who make sweeping generalizations about us as a group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of these people don\u2019t really know what we do . . . and how much we help <a data-wpil-monitor-id=\"397\" href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/29-biggest-linkedin-mistakes\/\">job seekers<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I often see blog posts and articles warning that professional resume writers are swindlers and resume writing credentials mean nothing. They lambaste us in general and place an arbitrary cap on what job seekers should pay for resumes and job search services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Surprisingly, some people still don\u2019t realize we exist as a profession \u2013 that there even is such a <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/worried-about-age-discrimination-9-things-on-your-executive-resume-that-show-your-age\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"797\">thing as a professional resume<\/a> writer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ever since the first careers industry credentialing organization, the Professional Association of Resume Writers (PARW), began about 30 years ago, we\u2019ve been sharing and learning best practices from each other, and offering clients the best strategies to accelerate their job search.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And too many job seekers have had terrible experiences with resume writing services. I\u2019ve done damage control for countless <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/whats-wrong-with-copying-an-executive-brand-resume-sample\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"369\">executives who paid top dollar for mediocre-at-best resumes<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Some executive job boards add fuel to the fire.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Toss in the behind the scenes battle between executive resume writers and some very well-known job boards. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their resume critiquing practices routinely trash the resumes created by some of the country\u2019s best writers. They do this to sell their own resume writing services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fact is, there are indeed thousands of fly-by-night, disreputable resume services ready to take advantage and fleece unsuspecting, bewildered <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/7-things-successful-executive-job-seekers-know\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"398\">job seekers<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Laura DeCarlo, the President of Career Directors International, a careers industry professional association, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/forbescoachescouncil\/2020\/05\/07\/four-ways-job-seekers-can-avoid-scams-when-hiring-a-resume-writer-or-career-coach\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">warns<\/a>:  &#8220;It&#8217;s not uncommon for scammers to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Publish professional looking websites that copy content from real practitioners.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Create fake professional associations and certifications \u2014 along with logos \u2014 and list both.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Show thumbnails of industry books, implying they are included in them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provide made-up testimonials.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Call themselves award-winning in their specialty with no actual award ever granted.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Display resume samples stolen from other writers on the internet.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Claim memberships they don&#8217;t hold and certifications they didn&#8217;t earn, complete with copied logos.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Those of us in the careers industry come across these bad eggs all the time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s well worth the effort to do a little legwork to find a reputable, talented professional. Their services can have a profound impact on your success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Some background about resume writing credentials.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A number of reputable career professional associations offer certifications. These credentials typically demonstrate a higher level of experience than those providers without them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They indicate that the writer stays <a data-wpil-monitor-id=\"30\" href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/resume-trends-from-the-experts\/\">current with industry trends<\/a>, communicates regularly with others in the industry, and attends conferences, webinars, teleseminars, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/about\/certified-executive-resume-master-cerm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">executive resume writing credentialing processes<\/a> are extremely grueling. And some require several years\u2019 professional experience before they can even be attempted, so they weed out incompetents. Also, beware that there are plenty of phony resume writing credentials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More about careers industry professional associations in Part 2 of this series.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The true value in working with a professional.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The best resume professionals know how to develop a personalized strategy around each client\u2019s unique value to the employers they\u2019re targeting.
