How to Find and Assess Top Executive Resume Writers, and Personal Branding and Job Search Strategists<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>[Please note, when I mention executive resumes and resume writing here, take that to also include any job search content writing (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/megguiseppi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LinkedIn profile<\/a>, biography, cover letters, etc.]<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What questions to ask to help you assess them<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You&#8217;ve done some background work, as outlined in Parts 1 and 2 of this series. Now it\u2019s time to contact the <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/whats-wrong-with-copying-an-executive-brand-resume-sample\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"368\">executive resume<\/a> writers you\u2019ve pre-qualified as a possible good fit for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>A word of advice going in<\/em>: <\/strong>Please don\u2019t take advantage of the resume writers you contact by expecting a free resume critique on how to re-work your existing resume yourself. And don&#8217;t expect to endlessly &#8220;pick their brain&#8221; about your job search, when you have no intention of retaining their services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It just isn\u2019t fair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some resume writers do offer in depth resume critiques for a fee. This can get you on the right track, if you feel you can <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/4-reasons-you-cant-write-your-own-executive-resume\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"432\">write your own resume<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be considerate: Send along your current resume and whatever other information the writer asks for initially. This will give them the opportunity to review your background and career target, determine whether you may be a good fit, and prepare for a meaningful conversation with you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Some things to keep in mind (and my thoughts) when communicating with each professional resume writer<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Does she\/he ask you how you\u2019re targeting your search? Don\u2019t be talked into an un-targeted, watered down generic resume. It could prolong or derail your job search. See my post, <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-write-an-irresistible-c-level-executive-resume-in-10-steps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">How to Write An Irresistible Executive Resume in 10 Steps<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Are they knowledgeable about <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/todays-executive-job-search-toolkit\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"433\">today&#8217;s executive job search<\/a>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is the writer interested in what you\u2019ve been doing so far in your job search?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do they have experience <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/7-things-i-learned-about-resume-writing-that-changed-everything\/\">writing resumes<\/a> for executives in your field?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How long is the turnaround time? I can tell you that I know of many top executive writers (myself included) who typically take 10-15 hours to write a resume. It&#8217;s a very involved and complex undertaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do they have experience dealing with any particular job search challenges you have \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-deal-with-employment-gaps-in-your-resume-and-linkedin-profile\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"434\">employment gaps<\/a>, career transition, sabbaticals, sidesteps in career progression, lack of educational degree, etc.?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ask about the terms of the contract or agreement for services you\u2019ll probably have to sign. Have them send you a copy, if you feel they are a possible good fit for you. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once they deliver the resume draft to you, will you have the opportunity to make revisions and provide feedback?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Will they deliver the finalized resume to you in Word, PDF, <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/executive-resume-ats-applicant-tracking-systems-need-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ATS-friendly<\/a> and\/or other versions? The ATS-friendly (Applicant Tracking System) version is the one you&#8217;ll send to people (like recruiters and other hiring professionals) who will place your resume into a database.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be wary of a guarantee that your new resume will <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/5-must-dos-to-land-more-executive-job-interviews\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"435\">land interviews<\/a> or get you jobs. Once documents leave the resume writer\u2019s office, she\/he has no control over whether you &#8220;tweak&#8221; them, how you use them, who you send them to, and how well you perform in interviews. You are solely responsible for your job search success, once you\u2019re equipped with your new, <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/toxic-executive-job-search-beliefs-no-target-employers\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"436\">targeted resume<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond the resume, do they also create supporting career marketing documents (biography, cover letter, etc.), and other services \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/does-my-linkedin-profile-really-need-a-photo\/\">LinkedIn profiles<\/a>, other social media profiles, personal branding, job search coaching, other career coaching, and other career services? If they don\u2019t offer other services you\u2019re interested in, will they recommend other professionals who do?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What kind of investment for services can you expect?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Fees range wildly, from a few hundred dollars to thousands for a resume alone. You\u2019ll have to decide where the value is for you, based on meeting your various criteria, and the writer\u2019s years of experience and level of expertise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The resume development process varies from one resume writer to another. Understand that you\u2019ll derive added value beyond the deliverable of a resume document, if the process helps you dig deep to uncover what specifically differentiates you from those you\u2019ll be competing against, and define your personal brand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This self-knowledge will help you better communicate the value you offer your <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/become-the-obvious-first-choice-for-your-target-employers-video-demo\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"437\">target employers<\/a>, when you\u2019re networking and interviewing for jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ask how and when payment is made.\u00a0Many writers expect full payment upfront, usually by credit card. You may be able to make other arrangements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Try to get a feel for whether or not the executive resume writer is a mutual good fit.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Overall in your discussions, do you feel that you and the resume writer are on the same wavelength and that you can work with her\/him?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Does she\/he &#8220;get&#8221; you and understand your specific needs?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do you get the feeling this resume writer will do the best job in marketing the best you have to offer your target employers?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Can they tell you what kind of success their clients have had in landing interviews?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do they meet all or most of your criteria?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the resume writers you talk with don\u2019t feel like a good fit for you, for whatever reason, they may be willing to refer you to other qualified writers. Many of us have a wide network of colleagues in the industry, with different areas of expertise, with whom we have referral connections. Just ask.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll likely be making a <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/10-reasons-your-executive-resume-needs-a-major-facelift\/\">major investment to partner with a top executive resume<\/a> writer.
