If so, cut it out!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although job boards do serve a purpose, I hesitate suggesting you use them at all. In my experience, too many <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/hot-button-executive-job-search-faqs\/\">executive job<\/a> seekers get sucked in once there, spending way too much time responding to job postings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They&#8217;re just not very good at helping people land good-fit jobs for several reasons, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Jobs posted may not be legitimate openings.<\/li><li>Job descriptions may not truly represent the job.<\/li><li>Even if jobs are no longer open, they may still linger on the job board.<\/li><li>You may not be able to delete your resume from their database once you land a job. This makes you forever appear as an active job-hunter and can jeopardize future jobs.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Job boards are an even worse prospect for job seekers over 50.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Job boards may pose a particular problem for those over 50.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/nextavenue\/2017\/04\/10\/the-problem-with-job-boards-for-older-job-seekers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Forbes article<\/a>, Chris Farrell cited research by Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan into age bias on major job search portals Monster, Indeed, CareerBuilder, Vault, Beyond and TheLadders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em><strong>&#8220;Madigan began snooping into this after a 70-year-old man told her office that he couldn\u2019t use a resum\u00e9-building tool on Monster\u2019s JOBR app because its drop-down menu required choosing your year of college graduation or first job and the dates stopped at 1980. (That would effectively rule out people over 52.) Other sites used dates ranging from 1950 to 1970 as cutoffs to apply for available positions.&#8221;<\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>When questioned about this by<a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2017\/03\/28\/521771515\/older-workers-find-age-discrimination-built-right-into-some-job-sites\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\"> NPR&#8217;s Ina Jaffe<\/a>, Monster had no comment; CareerBuilder and Beyond responded that they had corrected it; TheLadders said their site doesn&#8217;t have cutoffs; Indeed said their possible dates go back to 1900; Vault couldn&#8217;t be reached.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not just a bad option for older job seekers, Chris echoed my warning that the big job portals are mostly a waste of time for ANY job seeker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The biggest drawback to responding to postings on the boards:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Along with the above reasons, your resume can easily be lost in the black hole that is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/ats-and-the-executive-resume-black-hole-what-you-may-not-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you post your resume on a job board, it immediately goes into a database with an ATS that matches jobs to candidates based on specific keywords they search your resume for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Human eyes won\u2019t review it, unless and until the ATS calls it up in response to a specific job opening. Then, your <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/the-worlds-best-executive-resume-is-not-enough\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"696\">resume must contain enough<\/a> of the keywords they\u2019ve deemed important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And . . . you&#8217;ll need to <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/whats-the-best-executive-resume-format-and-length\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"820\">format your resume<\/a> correctly to make it through ATS. Plus,&nbsp;every ATS is built differently. There is no standard for resume formatting across all ATS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">And . . . if you don&#8217;t re-tool your resume \u2013 <em>each time you apply for a job online<\/em> \u2013 to contain the right keywords for each particular job posting, you probably won\u2019t make the cut. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">All of this severely limits the chances your resume will be seen, and that you&#8217;ll land a job through all that time spent on job boards.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Instead, use the best job search strategy.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A much better way to spend your time is in networking \u2013&nbsp;the old-fashioned way to land a job . . . <em>with a new twist these days.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Older job seekers typically have more expansive networks to tap than younger ones. A bigger network means more potential job leads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And networking is the only way to <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-network-into-the-goldmine-of-hidden-executive-jobs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">tap into the goldmine of &#8220;hidden&#8221; jobs<\/a> that never show up on job boards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, social networking makes it easier than ever to re-connect with people you&#8217;ve let lost touch with, and reach out to new faces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>But don&#8217;t give up on job boards entirely.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of languishing on the boards responding to job postings, go to them for <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/worksheets-personal-branding-and-executive-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"company and industry research (opens in a new tab)\">company and industry research<\/a> purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Find job descriptions that look like a mutual good fit in terms of qualifications \u2014&nbsp;whether or not the location or the actual company itself is a good fit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to use job boards for research and market intelligence.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Search the job titles you\u2019re seeking to uncover the all-important job-specific relevant keywords you\u2019ll need for your resume and online profiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The keywords will represent areas of expertise, such as \u201cFinancial Analysis\u201d or \u201cIT Infrastructure\u201d. The right keywords in the content of your job search materials are important to help you get found online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Search the job titles you\u2019re seeking at the companies you want to work for, to uncover company and industry particulars, and to help you with due diligence.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Are you spending hours every day, posting your executive resume on job boards?
