My personal branding worksheet below will help you pinpoint the things about you that make you a good fit for the employers you want to work for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The other initial steps for successful job search are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Targeting<\/strong> \u2013 determining which employers are a mutual good fit, and <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Research<\/strong> &#8211; finding out what specific challenges your target employers are facing that you are uniquely qualified to help them with.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Along with branding, these 3 things form the foundation that informs every aspect of your job search. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>First, a little history about personal branding<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Tom Peters ignited the business world in 1997 with his personal branding manifesto on Fast Company, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/28905\/brand-called-you\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">THE BRAND CALLED YOU<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">\u201cYou&#8217;re every bit as much a brand as Nike, Coke, Pepsi, or the Body Shop. Start thinking like your own favorite brand manager. Ask yourself the same question the brand managers at Nike, Coke, Pepsi, or the Body Shop ask themselves: What is it that my product or service does that makes it different? Give yourself the traditional 15-words-or-less contest challenge. Take the time to write down your answer. And then take the time to read it. Several times.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Start by identifying the qualities or characteristics that make you distinctive from your competitors &#8212; or your colleagues. What have you done lately &#8212; this week &#8212; to make yourself stand out? What would your colleagues or your customers say is your greatest and clearest strength? Your most noteworthy (as in, worthy of note) personal trait?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Your brand is your reputation \u2013 the perception of you held by the external world. It is the combination of personal attributes, values, drivers, strengths, and passions you draw from. These are the things that differentiate your unique promise of value from your competitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your brand helps those assessing you determine if they should hire you or do business with you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You need to identify those qualities and characteristics within you. Further, communicate a crystal clear, consistent message across multiple channels \u2013 <em>online and offline<\/em>. Design your message to resonate with your target audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>More and more executive job seekers are embracing personal branding<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re someone who thinks <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/10-things-you-may-not-know-about-personal-branding\/\">personal branding is the same thing<\/a> as bragging, so you want no part of it, watch this video. It should help you see that you&#8217;re not thinking about this in the right way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video class=\"lazyload\" height=\"1080\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 1920 \/ 1080;\" width=\"1920\" controls data-src=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Is-Personal-Branding-the-Same-as-Bragging.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Fortunately, more and more savvy job seekers these days have some understanding of the value of personal branding. Therefore, they are more willing than ever to do the necessary work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They understand that, in today\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/5-toxic-beliefs-that-can-derail-your-executive-job-search\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"781\">executive job search<\/a> environment, many of their competitors have done the branding work. So they also have to leverage this strategy, just to keep pace with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What if you don&#8217;t bother with personal branding?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Without personal branding:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>How will you gain clarity about what makes you a good-fit candidate?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How will you understand the combination of personal attributes, strengths, and areas of expertise that make you unique and valuable to the employers you want to work for?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How will you reconnect with your vision for the world, personal purpose, values and passions so that you can move toward true career fulfillment?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How will you know how to position and present yourself?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How will you know what kind of content to write about yourself?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll end up with generic content in your resume, biography, LinkedIn profile, etc., trying to cover too many bases. Your content probably won&#8217;t resonate with anyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-black-color has-text-color\"><strong>My Personal Branding Worksheet<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Below you&#8217;ll find part of my basic personal branding worksheet, similar to the one I use with my clients. You&#8217;ll also find information about purchasing the complete personal branding worksheet plus other important worksheets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most importantly, as you do this worksheet and then use it to create your job search materials, keep your target employers in mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your mission in <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/what-personal-branding-is-not\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"778\">defining your personal brand is<\/a> to understand what differentiates the unique value you offer your target employers, over those competing against you. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What this worksheet will do for you<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>After completing the worksheet, you will know (among other things):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What combination of skills and personal qualities set you apart from the rest.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What makes you a good hiring choice.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What makes you a better fit than the other guys.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How you\u2019re uniquely qualified to help your target employers solve specific problems.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Build your brand and personal marketing materials (resume, LinkedIn profile, bio, cover letters, etc.) around the value you offer those target employers, and how you will help them meet specific current pressing needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And be mindful of the \u201cpersonal\u201d aspect of personal branding to generate chemistry, make your personal marketing communications an interesting read, and help target employers envision you on the job, making a difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep in mind that your personal marketing content should be unique to you, and not so generic that it could apply to any of your competitors. Sameness won\u2019t \u201csell\u201d you. Differentiation, niching and chemistry will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Position yourself as a good fit<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>All of this will lead you toward employers who are a mutual good fit. These are the employers who will benefit the most from your expertise. They are the employers who will bring you career fulfillment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/commonsense-executive-job-search-what-you-dont-do-can-hurt-you\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">be empathetic<\/a>. Put yourself in the shoes of the people who will be assessing you for the jobs you want \u2013 employers, <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-find-executive-recruiters-specializing-in-your-niche\/\">recruiters<\/a> and other hiring professionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Make it easy for them to find the information about you (in your resume, LinkedIn profile, etc.) that tells them you\u2019re a good fit for them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make it easy for them to draw a direct line from your qualifications to how you operate on the job, and how you will be a &#8220;fixer&#8221; for them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make it clear to them when you network and in interviews that you have what they need, so you\u2019re a good hiring choice.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Let these things drive the way you promote yourself in <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/what-not-to-put-in-your-c-level-executive-resume\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"780\">your resume<\/a> and other marketing materials, and how you navigate your job search.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">1. &nbsp;Who is your target audience and why do they need you?<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Determine what kind of work you want to do (job position and industry). Then identify which companies and organizations will afford you the opportunity to <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/explore-dream-discover-work-your-passion\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"779\">work your passion<\/a>. Determine what hiring decision makers in that field are looking for in candidates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, research your target list of companies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What problems are they facing right now that you have experience with?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How will you be a &#8220;fixer&#8221; for them, hitting the ground running?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Identify and keep track of the keywords you see associated with the necessary qualifications. You&#8217;ll use these keywords throughout your supporting documents and especially in <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/linkedin-personal-branding-executive-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">your LinkedIn profile<\/a> and other online presence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You&#8217;ll find my separate worksheets for these things here:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/7-tips-to-build-your-executive-job-search-target-companies-list\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">How to Build Your Executive Job Search Target Companies List<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/best-ways-and-places-to-research-your-target-employers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Best Ways and Places to Research Your Target Employers<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Create your personal brand messaging (resume, LinkedIn profile, bio, email communications, etc.) around the keywords and content that will attract your target employers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Further, find out where those decision makers hang out, in person and online. Position yourself in front of them. Capture their attention and stay top-of-mind with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. &nbsp;What are your vision and purpose?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Look externally at the bigger picture of your vision for the world. Look internally at how you might help the world realize your vision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think about one world problem you would like to see solved. Consider one area of life that you want to see transformed or improved. This is your vision. What role might you play in making your vision happen? This is your purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Along with finding career fulfillment, these things will help you better align yourself with companies and organizations that will be a <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/why-culture-fit-matters-executive-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">good culture fit<\/a> for both of you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. &nbsp;What are your values?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Your values are your guiding principles \u2013 things like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Balance, being the best, agility, calmness, challenge, decisiveness, perseverance, drive, honesty, integrity, pragmatism, sensitivity, structure, teamwork, sharing, vitality, zeal<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As with vision and purpose, knowing your top values helps you choose employers whose values match yours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. &nbsp;What are your passions?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>What do you most enjoy doing \u2013 in your personal life and work life? Think about the activities, interests, or conversational topics that fascinate and energize you. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For instance, your passions may make you get out of bed at 6 a.m. on a Saturday morning. They get you talking enthusiastically with others. Think about how your passions converge with what you do best at work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We all perform better and have more job satisfaction when we&#8217;re doing work that, at least in some part, satisfies our passions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5. &nbsp;What are your top personal brand attributes?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>People hire people they feel they know and like. Employers prefer those who they feel will work well with their other employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>How do you define your personality? <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What words do those around you (at work and elsewhere) use to describe you? <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Which personality traits define how you make things happen?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Identify 3 or 4 adjectives that best describe the value you offer. Consult a thesaurus to nail the exact words. Your brand attributes may be one or more of these:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Collaborative, resilient, forward-focused, risk-taking, connected, international, visionary, diplomatic, intuitive, precise, enterprising, ethical, genuine, accessible<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In your job search materials, networking and interviewing, <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-c-a-r-storytelling-gives-executive-resume-branding-zing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">use storytelling<\/a> to vividly illustrate how you use your best attributes to get things done on the job and how those attributes benefitted your past employers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-black-color has-text-color\"><strong>Get the Full Worksheet to Define Your Personal Brand<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The 5 steps above represent just a portion of my branding worksheet.
