You want people to find <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-get-your-personal-brand-into-your-linkedin-profile\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"155\">your LinkedIn profile<\/a> \u2014<em> loaded with plenty of brand-supporting content<\/em> \u2014 when they Google \u201cyour name\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Turning off your activity broadcasts and changing the option for who can see your activity on their homepage, will avoid alerting your network to changes you\u2019ll make.<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ll find these options on the Privacy &amp; Settings page in the drop-down menu at your photo avatar in the upper right-hand corner of your profile:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Click on &#8220;Profile&#8221; and under &#8220;Privacy Controls&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Select &#8220;Turn on\/off your activity broadcasts&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>In the pop-up, unclick the box for \u201cLet people know when you change your profile, make recommendations, or follow companies\u201d. Close the box.<\/li>\n<li>Then click on &#8220;Select who can see your activity feed&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Select &#8220;Only you&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>When you\u2019re done making profile changes, go back in and click the box to turn on activity broadcasts, and change your activity feed back to \u201cEveryone\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That solves your problem, right? Take these steps and no one will be the wiser.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, that\u2019s not the case.<\/p>\n<p>In the LinkedIn Help entry Showing or Hiding Activity Updates About You, you&#8217;ll find the following:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">While you can limit most of your notifications, the following notifications will be posted regardless of your activity settings:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Adding or changing your profile photo<\/li>\n<li>Connecting with other LinkedIn members. Note: You can turn the notification off when you make a new connection by hiding your connection list<\/li>\n<li>Group Activity &#8211; You now have the option to turn this off within your Group settings, if you don&#8217;t, an activity will post. Learn more about preventing updates when you join a group<\/li>\n<li>Sharing content<\/li>\n<li>Following a company<\/li>\n<li>Upgrading to a Premium account (doesn\u2019t apply to Job Seeker account)<\/li>\n<li>Following an Influencer, Channel, or Publisher<\/li>\n<li>When you \u201cLike\u201d shared content<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Let\u2019s say you don\u2019t make any of those particular changes, so LinkedIn isn\u2019t going to jeopardize your confidentiality.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s always the threat that someone at your current company keeps tabs on employees\u2019 LinkedIn profiles to suss out job-hunters.<\/p>\n<p>Or that someone at your company just happens to see your profile, notices you\u2019ve updated it, and asks you why.<\/p>\n<p>I advise my clients that they should expect to be asked if they\u2019re planning to leave the company, and have a ready answer.<\/p>\n<p>They need to craft a short and sweet answer about why they\u2019ve updated their profile, and say the same thing to everyone, except perhaps those people they can absolutely trust to keep their plans confidential.<\/p>\n<p>If you tell too many different stories, you\u2019ll have a hard time keeping track of what you said to whom.<\/p>\n<p>One acceptable way to handle this is to say you\u2019ve updated your profile to better represent the company and support the company\u2019s brand. Beyond its job search capabilities, LinkedIn has become a valuable tool for companies.<\/p>\n<p>More and more of them have LinkedIn Company profiles, and encourage their employees to have <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/5-reasons-your-personal-brand-loves-linkedin\/\">LinkedIn profiles and become brand<\/a> embassadors for the company by networking through LinkedIn.
