If you&#8217;re a candidate of interest, they will Google &#8220;your name&#8221; to find out as much as they can about you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The hiring process is costly. So they\u2019ll probably move on to the next name on their list and focus on candidates with a more robust online presence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Along with Google, Bing and other major search engines, they will search on LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and other social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Conversely, if they find negative search results for you, you\u2019ll be tainted to them, and most likely also be thrown out of the running.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t forget that LinkedIn and other social networks are search engines, too, just like Google or Bing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because LinkedIn is the most important social network for job search and career, this should be where you devote most of your online job search time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The LinkedIn search engine pulls results from the content in members\u2019 profiles. And hiring professionals have special tools for deep and advanced search on LinkedIn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because they rely so heavily on LinkedIn to source candidates, what you do with your profile really matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Job search social media expert <a href=\"https:\/\/money.usnews.com\/money\/blogs\/outside-voices-careers\/articles\/2017-08-03\/how-social-media-can-help-and-harm-your-job-search\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hannah Morgan<\/a> described what\u2019s going on, when these decision makers view candidates&#8217; social media activity:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cEmployers want to hire someone who has strong decision-making abilities, and good judgment and ethics. Would you want to work with someone who said unkind things about you, lied or re-shared information you told them in confidence? This is why employers have begun using social media as a recruiting tool. The things people post online shed light on their judgment and professionalism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If this angers you to the point of wanting to delete your social media accounts, think twice. I don&#8217;t want to put myself &#8216;out there&#8217;. I don&#8217;t need to self-Google at all.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">It may well be that you can land a job without having an online footprint, but those opportunities become more and more rare these days.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Face it, just to keep pace with your competitors, you need to get with it, and take control of your online reputation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Take a look at your online footprint right now. At the very least, you need to have a fully-populated LinkedIn profile. And you should consider having at least some kind of presence elsewhere \u2013 Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re not there, people are going to wonder whether you\u2019re social media savvy and know how to operate in the new world of world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Your photo<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Studies have shown that people relate to content <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/does-my-linkedin-profile-really-need-a-photo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">better when it&#8217;s associated with a photo<\/a> of the author. Make sure you have a professional-looking, close-up headshot for all your profiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Reasons to rule you out<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If hiring decision makers are inundated with an overload of candidates, they\u2019ll set the bar higher to whittle down the candidate pool. Unfortunately, that can mean that some great-fit candidates will be ruled out if they find \u201cdigital dirt\u201d, and never given the chance to dispute the negative search results, if they\u2019re untrue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a competitive job market, employers demand (and get) the very best of the best candidates. Those who have squeaky-clean online footprints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to control what shows up in Google results for &#8220;your name&#8221;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You can absolutely control what you put online. And if you&#8217;ve flubbed and posted something regrettable to one of your social media accounts, you can take it down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Going forward, you may want to keep some of your social media posts private, so only select people will see them. it can\u2019t remove it from the internet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If a website has deleted the content in question but it\u2019s still showing up in Google search results, you can use the search engine\u2019s quick tool to make a <a href=\"https:\/\/search.google.com\/search-console\/remove-outdated-content\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">formal removal request<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If, on the other hand, the webmaster isn\u2019t responsive or won\u2019t grant your request, you\u2019ll need to provide the following to Google:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Website URL<br>\u2022 Google search URL<br>\u2022 Screenshots of the material<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/legal\/troubleshooter\/1114905\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Google\u2019s troubleshooter<\/a> can guide you through these steps.&#8221;
