To build your network, connect on LinkedIn with all kinds of people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Get back in touch with those you\u2019ve neglected \u2013 as so many of us do when we\u2019re busy in our professional lives \u2013 and connect with new people, to expand your network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is what LinkedIn is all about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But I often need to convince job seekers to keep <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-not-to-build-your-executive-network\/\">building their LinkedIn networks<\/a>, including reaching out to people they don&#8217;t know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>It&#8217;s okay, in fact it&#8217;s good, to have a high number of LinkedIn connections, and keep increasing them.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It just makes sense that the more people in your network, the more opportunities likely to come your way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For years (maybe since the beginning), LinkedIn sent a conflicting message to members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although reaching 500 connections, and beyond, will make your profile land higher in <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/keywords-in-job-search-how-important-are-they\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"468\">search results for relevant keywords<\/a>, LinkedIn frowned on connecting with people you don&#8217;t know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, this line appeared in their Terms of Use until 2018:  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Don&#8217;t &#8220;invite people you do not know to join your network.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>With their <a href=\"https:\/\/socialimpact.linkedin.com\/en-us\/plusone\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Plus One Pledge<\/a> initiative, LinkedIn actually encourages us to reach outside our networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s how they describe the Pledge:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s an intention to share your time, talent, or connections with people outside your network who may not have access to the same resources you do. By taking the Plus One Pledge, you\u2019ll help others and strengthen your own network.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-find-and-connect-with-the-right-recruiters-on-linkedin\/\">Connect on LinkedIn<\/a> with just about everyone you know, in both your professional and personal life. But don&#8217;t stop there. Some of the kinds of people you may not know to bring into your network include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-find-executive-recruiters-specializing-in-your-niche\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"469\">Executive recruiters in your niche<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hiring decision makers at your <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/7-tips-to-build-your-executive-job-search-target-companies-list\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"473\">target companies<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other employees at your <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/best-ways-and-places-to-research-your-target-employers\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"474\">target companies<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Employees at your current and previous companies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Professionals in your industry<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Influencers in your industry<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These people can help you meet your career goals, even though many of them may be strangers to you, or people you barely know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">One of the Many Good Reasons to Connect with More People<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" overlooked job search strategy is to <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/guide-to-informational-interviews-for-executive-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">conduct informational interviews<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These are informal conversations with people working at the companies and in the fields in which you want to work, or people who are within a few degrees of separation from them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s not a job interview and these people do not hold the reins on any particular jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your mission is to gather information for your due diligence and to determine whether that company, the role(s) and you will be a mutual good fit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the purpose of these interviews is NOT to ask for a job, the topic may come up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you&#8217;re a first degree connection of someone on LinkedIn, you&#8217;ll have a much better chance of getting an informational interview with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Another Good Reason to Connect with More People<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In tandem with conducting informational interviews with people at your target companies, there&#8217;s the likelihood that, once you&#8217;ve established a relationship, you may feel comfortable enough to ask them for a referral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As I detailed in my post, <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/networking-to-referral-to-hire-best-way-to-land-executive-job\/\">Employee Referrals: The Best Way to Land an Executive Job<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An article on Smart Recruiters notes some of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smartrecruiters.com\/blog\/essential-guide-to-employee-referral-programs-in-2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">benefits of employee referral programs<\/a>&nbsp;to the employer:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Increased Hiring Velocity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Easier Access to Qualified Candidates<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Better for Your Hiring Budget<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Employees Become Brand Evangelists<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Referred Employees Stay Longer<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Higher Levels of Employer Satisfaction<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Another Smart Recruiters article no longer available online described the cost effectiveness of these programs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cHiring via referral is substantially quicker than hiring through a job posting or career site as several steps for recruitment employees \u2014 job description writing, ad posting, resume collection, and candidate screening \u2014 are unnecessary when the applicant is a referral.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWith few exceptions, employee referral programs are more cost effective than other hiring processes: consider the 15 percent fee an executive recruiter could charge on a $100,000\/year hire ($15,000) versus a $1500 referral bonus for the same hire.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>So you can see, companies are very much in favor of hiring referred candidates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although they may not be well-known within the company, referred candidates are at least somewhat known. And people are more likely to hire people they know at least somewhat over complete strangers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond this comfort factor, each qualified referred candidate can save the company tens of thousands of dollars, over other hiring methods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Set the Stage to Attract People<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/network-212453_640.png\" alt=\"robust network\" class=\"wp-image-14899 lazyload\" style=\"width:840px;height:auto\"\/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"452\" src=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/network-212453_640.png\" alt=\"robust network\" class=\"wp-image-14899 lazyload\" style=\"width:840px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/network-212453_640.png 640w, https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/network-212453_640-300x212.png 300w, https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/network-212453_640-150x106.png 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If you haven&#8217;t put some time and effort into creating a <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/linkedin-personal-branding-executive-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fully fleshed out, magnetic LinkedIn profile<\/a>, you may turn off potential connections right from the get-go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your profile needs to tell people:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Who you are and how you add value<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How your personality drives the way you operate on the job<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What skills and qualifications you have that your target employers need<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How you&#8217;ve contributed to past employers in a way that will resonate with future employers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How you achieved those wins<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Put yourself in the shoes of the people you reach out to, to connect with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They&#8217;ll probably go straight to your profile to learn something about you and determine whether or not they will accept your invitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I don&#8217;t know how many times I&#8217;ve done this very thing with people who asked me to connect, and then found these issues with their profile:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>No <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/does-my-linkedin-profile-really-need-a-photo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">profile photo<\/a> <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The boring, anemic default <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/3-big-mistakes-that-screw-up-your-linkedin-professional-headline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">profile headline<\/a> (your most recent job)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Little to no content overall<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The About section left completely blank or with nothing much<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-write-a-dazzling-linkedin-summary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">About section<\/a> had generic information that could apply to anyone like them <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re making blunders like those, <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/3-reasons-i-wont-connect-with-you-on-linkedin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">I probably won&#8217;t connect with you<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although I may be okay connecting with you if you have minimal content in your profile, it DOES have to say enough about you to help me decide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I want to know SOMETHING about you before adding you to my network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Make sure you have at least some information in the Experience section before you start inviting people to connect with you. Give us something to grab hold of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Get on the Radar of Potential Connections<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you&#8217;ve determined who you want to connect with, work on positioning yourself in front of them and getting them to notice you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Comment on and react to their <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/smart-personal-branding-posting-linkedin-updates-vs-updating-your-linkedin-profile\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LinkedIn updates<\/a> and articles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Post updates yourself that @ mention specific people and\/or employers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Join the <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/linkedin-and-personal-branding-showcase-subject-matter-expertise-linkedin-groups\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LinkedIn Groups<\/a> they belong to and comment on\/react to their posts there<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Interact with them on other social media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How To Generate Interest and Compel People To Want To Connect on LinkedIn<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/network-3148727_640.jpg\" alt=\"executive job search networking\" class=\"wp-image-7496 lazyload\" style=\"width:840px;height:auto\"\/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" src=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/network-3148727_640.jpg\" alt=\"executive job search networking\" class=\"wp-image-7496 lazyload\" style=\"width:840px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/network-3148727_640.jpg 640w, https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/network-3148727_640-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/network-3148727_640-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/network-3148727_640-600x400.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Crafting a <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/7-linkedin-things-you-should-do-but-probably-dont\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"728\">LinkedIn invitation to connect<\/a> with someone you don\u2019t know can be touchy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Approach someone in the wrong way, and it can ruin your chance of having the message read and responded to in the way you\u2019d hoped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just as you wouldn&#8217;t (I hope!) rush up to a stranger at an in-person networking event and blurt out that you\u2019d like to \u201cpick their brain\u201d, don&#8217;t rudely put yourself in front of a stranger on LinkedIn and expect them to do you a favor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One turnoff is using only the default message &#8220;I&#8217;d like to add you to my professional network&#8221; (or however the default reads right now). The recipient probably has no idea who you are. Your message and request may be ignored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can, and should, take the time to customize the message so it will resonate with the recipient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another offense is sending a too-long message to them. The recipient could well be someone who receives dozens (if not more) of these invitations daily. Make it easy for them by keeping the message short and to the point. Don&#8217;t turn them off. Give them a reason to WANT to connect with you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Little-Used Way To Connect on LinkedIn<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In a LinkedIn article, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/12-things-i-have-learned-linkedin-using-bruce-johnston\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bruce Johnston<\/a> described 12 things he&#8217;s learned about using LinkedIn, including: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;LinkedIn can be used to find paths to people you don\u2019t know via people you do know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every time you see a little \u201c2nd\u201d beside someone\u2019s name on LinkedIn, that means you share one or more LinkedIn Connections with that person. You can ask your mutual connection for an introduction, a referral or for more background on your person of interest. And you don&#8217;t need a premium subscription to obtain this info or use it. This is a very underrated and underutilized aspect of LinkedIn.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2 Quick Messages to Connect on LinkedIn<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are two easy ways to circumvent the default invitation to connect message:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Mention a mutual connection<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>[First name],<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our mutual connection, [connection name], suggested that you and I might benefit from connecting here on LinkedIn. I hope you agree!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[Your name]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Mention a mutual interest<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Hi [first name],<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I was talking with a mutual connection of ours, [connection name], about [important topic]. These are based on a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/dailymuse\/2013\/10\/15\/how-to-write-linkedin-messages-that-actually-get-read\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Forbes article by The Muse<\/a> from several years ago, but the advice is still good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Paragraph 1 \u2013 Start the message by telling them who you are.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In one to two sentences, your first paragraph should briefly describe who you are. Assume the recipient won\u2019t know you at all, or may not remember you, if they have met you. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Entice them to jump to your profile where you&#8217;ll really clinch the deal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Make it easy for them. Include any names of mutual contact(s) or mutual LinkedIn Groups, tell them if you\u2019ve worked for the same company, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It may read something like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m a VP of Marketing at XYZ company in [location].
