If you&#8217;re having trouble landing a great-fit job, you need to learn how to network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll probably have to do a lot of networking to find and land your next gig . . . unless you\u2019re very, very lucky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Did you know that, although the vast majority of executive job seekers <a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/use-job-boards-for-research-not-to-find-jobs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rely entirely on job boards to find jobs<\/a>, good fit jobs are typically the result of purposeful networking?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/7-things-successful-executive-job-seekers-know\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"486\">get your head out of the job boards<\/a> and stop wasting so much time sending your resume out in response to so-so online job postings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First things first. Don\u2019t start your <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/executive-job-search-you-dont-know-what-you-dont-know\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"483\">job search without knowing<\/a> what kinds of job(s) you want and which companies and organizations will provide opportunities that mutually benefit you and the employer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That requires <a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/executive-job-search-research-your-target-employers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">targeting and researching<\/a>, say, 15-20 companies, on how you can help them meet specific current needs and challenges of theirs. In other words, determine what makes you a good <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/does-your-executive-resume-position-you-as-the-best-hiring-choice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hiring choice<\/a> for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hop onto the job boards for company research but, please, don\u2019t be tempted to spend the biggest chunk of your <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/top-10-executive-job-search-posts-from-2015\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"484\">job search efforts responding to postings<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Your mission is to use your research to help you understand what makes you a good fit for your target employers, and to <a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/the-new-10-step-executive-personal-branding-worksheet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">define your personal brand<\/a> around what differentiates your unique value from your competitors. Your research also helps you create your resume, biography, LinkedIn profile,&nbsp;and other career materials.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Then you\u2019ll network your way into the companies you\u2019ve targeted your job search materials towards, whether or not they\u2019ve posted openings for jobs you want.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Circumvent the gatekeepers for as long as possible.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You&#8217;ll have to interact with human resources and <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-find-executive-recruiters-specializing-in-your-niche\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">executive recruiters<\/a> at some point, but try to first become at least a somewhat known entity within your target companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Identify and connect directly with people at your <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/7-tips-to-build-your-executive-job-search-target-companies-list\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">target<\/a> companies&nbsp;\u2212 hiring decision makers and other employees at almost any professional level \u2212&nbsp;where they hang out online and offline. LinkedIn (company) Pages and each company\u2019s website will help you find them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may not know that one of the best ways to land a job at one of your target companies is through a <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/networking-to-referral-to-hire-best-way-to-land-executive-job\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"referral from an employee (opens in a new tab)\">referral from an employee<\/a>. Employers are more attracted to people referred by their own employees because they feel they already know them. And the referring employees may receive a monetary reward for bringing in a good-fit candidate. Everybody wins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This proactive approach will lead you into the goldmine of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-network-into-the-goldmine-of-hidden-executive-jobs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">hidden jobs<\/a>\u201d at your target companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What If You Hate Networking?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/network-better.jpg\" alt=\"executive networking\" class=\"wp-image-12357 lazyload\" style=\"width:840px;height:auto\"\/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" src=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/network-better.jpg\" alt=\"executive networking\" class=\"wp-image-12357 lazyload\" style=\"width:840px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/network-better.jpg 640w, https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/network-better-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/network-better-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/network-better-600x400.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re like lots of people, you dread that aspect of job search, even though you know you need to do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Harvard Business Review article offered some clever and easily actionable ways to <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2021\/10\/easy-networking-tips-for-the-networking-haters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">excel at networking<\/a>, both online and in-person: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Look for islands.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Marissa King, professor of organizational behavior at the Yale School of Management, hates networking but has been researching it for more than 15 years. She found that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;What we know from research is that people don\u2019t form walls or oceans. They actually tend to clump together in small groups. So really, it\u2019s not an ocean of people, it\u2019s only little islands. People almost always interact in groups of two or dyads.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Her tactic when seeing islands of people at an event: look for a group of odd numbers, for example, 3, 5 or 7 people. In those groups, <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;There\u2019s someone who really isn\u2019t a part of the conversation, and they are likely looking for a conversational partner.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Networking doesn\u2019t have to involve meeting new people.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>With virtual networking, there&#8217;s great <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-build-a-powerful-executive-network\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">power in our existing networks<\/a>. And one of the most sensible and wise things to <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-network-better\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">network better<\/a> is to tap dormant ties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A study asked people to make a list of 10 current connections and 10 people that they haven\u2019t reached out to in 2-3 years. Participants were then asked to reach out to those people for advice or help. They found that dormant ties were extraordinarily powerful in that they provided their connections with more creative ideas, and more surprisingly, the trust within those relationships had endured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Turn it into a game.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Jerry Dischler, Vice President and General Manager at Google is an introvert who came up with a unique way to make networking&nbsp;less intimidating when attending events with sometimes thousands of new faces. This also helps distract him from the fear that goes with attending large events:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He pretends to be an extraverted character in a video game and scores points by talking to new people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Don\u2019t stress yourself with preparing for small talk.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Kevin Rose, an angel investor in Facebook, Twitter, and Square and founder of the social news site Digg, may appear extremely confident. But he describes himself as socially awkward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;I try to find something that is not small talk but is also a mutual kind of interest. There\u2019s a bunch of wacky things that I\u2019m into and so when people say, &#8216;What have you been up to lately?&#8217; I could respond with something like how I am trying to inoculate tree trunks to help grow Lion\u2019s Mane mushrooms. And typically, someone responds with, &#8216;Wow, tell me more.&#8217; Or they will share one of their wacky interests with me.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Prior to events, he spends time consciously thinking about the various activities he has been engaging in that might be of interest to the type of people he will be meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;Give to Get&#8221; Networking Makes It Easier and More Palatable<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/networking-branding.jpg\" alt=\"give to get networking\" class=\"wp-image-19851 lazyload\" style=\"width:840px;height:auto\"\/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" src=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/networking-branding.jpg\" alt=\"give to get networking\" class=\"wp-image-19851 lazyload\" style=\"width:840px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/networking-branding.jpg 640w, https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/networking-branding-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/networking-branding-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/networking-branding-600x400.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>An article by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/how-network-without-icky-feeling-andrew-seaman-drnpf\/\">Andrew Seaman<\/a>, Editor-At-Large for Jobs &amp; Career Development at LinkedIn News, includes this advice to turn traditional networking on its head: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Focus on connecting, not networking<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Be helpful to others. Instead of walking into a room wondering what you can get out of it, try to understand the needs and goals of others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The power of three<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When you walk into a room, plan to meet three people, learn three things, and share three things. This structured approach makes networking less overwhelming by giving you a clear, achievable goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Ask thoughtful questions<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Ask meaningful questions of others so that you can find out what are their hopes, what are their desires, what are their wants, so that then you can be helpful. The goal is to discover how you can help them \u2014 not in a forced, transactional way but by genuinely understanding what they need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Follow up thoughtfully<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>After meeting someone, send a quick follow-up within 24 hours. Mention something specific from your conversation and offer any help or resources you think might be useful to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Build long-term relationships<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Networking isn\u2019t a one-time interaction. It\u2019s all about the long game. Create a simple system for staying in touch with your connections. Be ready to tell people how they can help you.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Just as you need to be prepared \u2013 through your industry and company research \u2013 to speak intelligently about trends and issues impacting your target employers, you need to be prepared to speak intelligently about yourself and your value in the marketplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you can\u2019t specifically tell people what you\u2019re looking for, they won\u2019t know how to help you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Relying on your targeting and research work, you should be able to easily craft a succinct statement that reinforces your <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/10-reasons-to-love-your-personal-brand\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">personal brand<\/a> and expertise, and be ready to use it at any time. Some call this your \u201celevator pitch\u201d. It should be structured something like this, with your own adjustments, of course:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m an expert in business transformation and high growth \u2013 the turnaround guy who rescues projects no one else can. I\u2019m looking for a VP or CIO position, with emphasis on (specific job focus), at a rapidly-expanding global pharmaceutical company in the greater Los Angeles area.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Make it vibrant, but keep it short and to the point. Practice it many times until it becomes second nature and flows easily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Connect more deeply with the people you already know.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Reconnect with and revive your existing network. If you\u2019re like many executives I speak with, you\u2019ve neglected these people because you had a job and didn\u2019t think you needed them or you just lost track of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This happens to the best of us. It\u2019s okay to circle back to them. Briefly apologize for not re-connecting sooner. Check in with them and find out what they\u2019re up to and update them on what you\u2019ve been doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But don\u2019t then rudely burst into a request for them to help you get a job. Reconnect first and revive the relationship. Then you can ask them if they have any connections at your target companies. And see if they\u2019d be willing to recommend you and\/or write you a letter of introduction, stating some of your qualifications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, reach out to former clients and vendors, professional associations, community groups and lifestyle groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Cast a far-reaching net to build out your existing network with fresh faces.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Your existing network will only take you so far. If you\u2019re not there already participating in Groups, posting updates, reacting to others&#8217; posts and reconnecting with people you know, and <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-not-to-build-your-executive-network\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">making new connections<\/a>, it\u2019s time to get busy. Leverage <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-not-to-build-your-executive-network\/\">LinkedIn to network<\/a> towards making first degree connections with people at your target companies. Work on using those new connections to get <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/guide-to-informational-interviews-for-executive-job-search\/\">informational interviews<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Twitter<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Search Twitter for your target contacts. Follow and <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/twitter-executive-branding-strategy-the-beauty-of-a-retweet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">retweet<\/a> them. Also look for your target companies themselves, job search experts, and job boards. They\u2019re tweeting job openings, offering advice and resources, and much more. An <a aria-label=\"active Twitter presence (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/twitter-vs-linkedin-executive-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">active Twitter presence<\/a> also shows you\u2019re an up-to-date, social media-savvy candidate.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Facebook, Instagram, and Other Social Networks<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Each one offers its own benefits.
