I know I\u2019m best suited to move into [kinds of jobs], but I\u2019m very interested in several other industries and disciplines, too. My expertise is very broad-based.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>She said that, after having her resume written by a professional earlier in the year, she had been <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/are-you-tweaking-your-out-dated-executive-resume-to-death\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rewriting and tweaking it<\/a> to broaden its appeal . . .<em> or so she thought.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her constant tweaking had, in fact, watered down the content so much that her true value to her future employer didn\u2019t shine through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now she was thoroughly confused about how to position herself in her resume and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/megguiseppi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LinkedIn profile<\/a>, and stuck in neutral in her job search.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of her crippling mindset, she didn\u2019t know how to deal with <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/linkedin-personal-branding-executive-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">writing her LinkedIn profile<\/a> either. It was generic and anemic, lacking much content, and also getting little action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Don&#8217;t fall prey to one of the deadliest job search mistakes \u2013 trying to launch a search campaign without a clear target.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Her marketing efforts had become generic. She was trying to cover too many bases and not hitting home with any of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/build-winning-relationships-with-executive-recruiters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Executive recruiters<\/a> and other hiring professionals assessing her by what they found about her online or in her resume weren\u2019t clearly seeing her as a good fit for the jobs they were trying to fill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They didn\u2019t have the time or inclination to sift through and ponder whether her unfocused mix of relevant and immaterial skills and contributions made her someone worth considering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This job seeker had started her <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/find-the-best-executive-resume-writer-for-you-what-questions-to-ask\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"424\">job search<\/a> without being prepared. She wasn\u2019t ready to <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-write-compelling-executive-resume-bullet-points-with-examples\/\">write a compelling resume<\/a>, LinkedIn profile, or other personal marketing materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She didn\u2019t know exactly who she was writing for, so she didn&#8217;t know what kind of content they should contain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3 Things You Must Do Before Writing Your Executive Resume and LinkedIn Profile<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. &nbsp;FOCUS: Get clear on what you want to do next.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Decide what kind of position(s) you\u2019re seeking, in which industry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do you want to do the same kind of work for the same kind of employer? Or do you want to switch gears and do different work, in a different industry?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This goes beyond helping you focus your search. It will help you clearly and succinctly communicate just where and how you&#8217;ll add value to a company or organization. And it will help you know how to tell others how they can help you reach your career goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Choosing a specific industry may or may not be an issue for you. For some roles, industry doesn&#8217;t matter. But you really need to know what kind of work you want to do, as specifically as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. &nbsp;TARGETING: Compile a list of, say, 15-20 companies or organizations that will meet your career needs.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Target your search so you\u2019ll know who you\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/7-things-i-learned-about-resume-writing-that-changed-everything\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">writing your resume<\/a> and LinkedIn profile for, and how to position yourself as the best hiring choice. <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/executive-job-search-research-your-target-employers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Research each company<\/a> on your list for your due diligence and to determine:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Pressing need(s) of theirs that you\u2019re uniquely qualified to help them meet,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Which qualifications, skills sets, and areas of expertise you possess that they need,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What makes you a good fit for their <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/why-culture-fit-matters-executive-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">corporate culture<\/a>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If they\u2019ll provide the kind of work\/life balance you require, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Which <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/keywords-in-job-search-how-important-are-they\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">relevant keywords<\/a> you\u2019ll need to use in your resume and LinkedIn profile.
