That is, translating their experience and unique value in terms that potential employers can understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond that aspect of job search communications, transitioning military leaders are pretty much in the same boat as any <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/deftly-organize-and-track-your-executive-job-search\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"65\">executive job seeker<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A few years ago Vera Steiner Blore interviewed me for her Military Leaders in Transition forum. My answers (slightly updated here) show how and why <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/executive-job-search-how-recruiters-find-you\/\">job search is basically the same for any senior executive<\/a> or leader. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tips to Help Transitioning Military Leaders Land the Jobs They Deserve<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Why is it so vital for senior executives to use social media as part of their executive job search?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Senior executives need a robust online presence because <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/10-best-ways-to-build-your-personal-brand-online\/\" target=\"_blank\">recruiters and hiring professionals will Google \u201ctheir name\u201d<\/a> if they&#8217;re being considered. Those with a strong online footprint are viewed as more desirable than those with limited or non-existent online presence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\"><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-network-into-executive-job\/\" target=\"_blank\">Networking is the best way to land a job<\/a>. First, identify the right people to network with \u2013 recruiters and employees at the companies you\u2019re targeting. Then \u201cmeet\u201d them where they hang out. These days, most of them are active on social media \u2013 LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, etc. \u2013 so you need to be there, too.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Most hiring professionals go to LinkedIn first, to search for and assess candidates, based on relevant keywords. If you have no LinkedIn profile, or <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"a skimpy one (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/deadly-linkedin-mistake-anemic-incomplete-profile\/\" target=\"_blank\">a skimpy one<\/a>, you may be invisible to them.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">But also, these people are looking online for \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/social-proof-where-online-presence-meets-personal-branding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">social proof<\/a>\u201d. They want information that backs up the claims you\u2019ve made about yourself in your resume. A diverse online presence will provide them with the information about you they need. And, it\u2019s important to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"self-google regularly (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/why-you-need-to-self-google-once-a-week\/\" target=\"_blank\">self-google regularly<\/a>. Monitor the search results for &#8220;your name&#8221; so you can deal with digital dirt, if necessary.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">2. What are some of the most effective strategies to build a personal brand to differentiate transitioning military leaders?<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Personal branding for executive job search (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/ignore-the-hype-what-authentic-personal-branding-is-and-is-not\/\" target=\"_blank\">Personal branding for executive job search<\/a> is all about identifying and communicating the things about you that your target companies are looking for. They include your personal attributes, motivating strengths, values, areas of expertise, skill sets, and other qualifications. Knowing this \u201cinsider\u201d information is critical. It helps you create brand-reinforcing content that generates chemistry for you and will resonate with your target employers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">So, before you can define and develop your personal brand, you need to start with targeting and research. Identify a good list of companies or organizations (say, 15-20) that will be a good mutual fit. Then research each one to find out what makes you potentially valuable to them.<\/span> <em>Why do they need you?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDifferentiation\u201d is the key with branding. Too many job seekers create personal marketing content (resume, LinkedIn profile, etc.) that reads pretty much the same as their competitors. Sameness won\u2019t distinguish you and position you as the best hiring choice. Differentiation is what makes you stand out over and above your competitors. Differentiation sells you to your target employers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. What differentiates an executive resume from the resume of a mid-level manager?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>No matter what your professional level, your resume is a document designed to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"market you as a good hire (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/does-your-executive-resume-position-you-as-the-best-hiring-choice\/\" target=\"_blank\">market you as a good hire<\/a>. The content in anyone\u2019s resume should position them as someone who is uniquely qualified to help certain employers meet certain pressing needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">At the senior <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/who-is-an-executive\/\">executive level<\/a>, qualifications that are important to include in the resume lean more towards leadership capability. These may include motivating teams to excel and build revenue, managing global operations, and turning around failing businesses. But these things may also be important for lower level executives and managers.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. What are some of the most common mistakes you&#8217;ve seen executives make throughout the job search process?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the biggest mistakes is trying to circumvent the targeting process and going straight to <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/personal-branding-resume-or-job-search-targeting-which-comes-first\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">writing their resume<\/a>. This results in content that\u2019s too generic and doesn\u2019t hit home with anyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Another very common mistake is spending the majority of job search time on various job boards, <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/use-job-boards-for-research-not-to-find-jobs\/\">responding to job postings<\/a>. Only about 5-10% of <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/are-you-executive-job-search-ready\/\">executive jobs<\/a> are landed through job boards. Doesn\u2019t it make more sense to limit your time there? You should spend most of your time on the method that yields something like an 80-90% success rate . . . that is, networking.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">5. How can transitioning military leaders accelerate their executive job search?<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>My best advise: Spend some time learning about <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/todays-executive-job-search-toolkit\/\">today\u2019s job search<\/a> and understanding the linear path it takes, so you can avoid missteps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Follow this checklist to get on board with best practices for today&#8217;s executive job search:<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Get clear on what kind of job you want. Identify who your target employers are. Determine what their needs&nbsp;are right now, how you can help them, and who their key hiring decision makers are.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Define your executive brand and differentiate your unique value from your&nbsp;competition.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Get your resume, bio and other personal marketing materials together. They form the foundation for&nbsp;all your brand communications.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Move your brand communications online with LinkedIn and other social media. Start&nbsp;building a diverse, vibrant online presence.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Put your online and offline brand communications to work in all your networking efforts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Work on circumventing the gatekeepers at your target companies. Connect directly&nbsp;with key hiring decision makers and other employees.
