You probably should be networking more, but it&#8217;s a challenge for you. If you&#8217;re an introvert, it may be even more daunting than for others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Maybe this is what you&#8217;re thinking . . .<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u201cI\u2019m terrible at networking. I hate asking people for favors. I\u2019ll skip that part.\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Too many of the <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-build-a-powerful-executive-network\/\">executive job seekers I speak with have neglected their network<\/a> for years, while they were securely employed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They didn\u2019t think they needed these people. Then, they\u2019re suddenly thrown into a <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/30-key-executive-job-search-faqs\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"366\">job search<\/a> and have to scramble to rebuild their network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We all should approach career management knowing that no job is permanent. We need to actively <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/the-power-of-social-capital-in-executive-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"nurture our networks (opens in a new tab)\">nurture our networks<\/a> throughout our careers, whether employed or not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Without networking, you won\u2019t get to the so-called \u201c<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"hidden job market (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-network-into-the-goldmine-of-hidden-executive-jobs\/\" target=\"_blank\">hidden job market<\/a>\u201d where most executive jobs reside. According to Executive Talent Agent Debra Feldman, they are jobs that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Were budgeted for but, for whatever reason, have not yet been announced.<\/li><li>Only internal people know about. The jobs won\u2019t be created until internal processes are in place.<\/li><li>Depend on an incumbent leaving. The company doesn\u2019t want the public to know about them.<\/li><li>Were created to accommodate a specific person because of their potential value to the company.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>The perfect job for you may never be posted anywhere!<\/strong><\/em>&nbsp;It may only exist in the hidden job market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Understand what smart executive job search networking is really about<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s something to keep in mind, from <a href=\"https:\/\/careerpivot.com\/2013\/asking-for-air-advice-insights-and-recommendations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Career Pivot's Marc Miller (opens in a new tab)\">Career Pivot&#8217;s Marc Miller<\/a> and  <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Career Sherpa Hannah Morgan (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/careersherpa.net\/networking-is-a-waste-of-time-or-is-it\/\" target=\"_blank\">Career Sherpa Hannah Morgan<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Networking is not asking for a job or a job lead.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s about getting AIR. Networking can rejuvenate how you feel about your <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/executive-job-searc-the-old-way-networking-still-works-best\/\">job or your job search<\/a> the same way oxygen reenergizes your body. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AIR is an acronym that stands for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Advice<\/strong> (career advancement, job search, career-changing)<\/li><li><strong>Information<\/strong> (company, industry trends, news)<\/li><li><strong>Recommendations<\/strong> (associations to join, books to read, skills to develop, people to talk to)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A low-pressure strategy to rebuild your executive job search network<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s one of the suggestions in my post <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-do-i-rebuild-my-network-for-executive-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\">How Do I Rebuild My Network for Executive Job Search?<\/a> This should make networking a little more comfortable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Reconnect with your existing network.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Connect more deeply with the people you already know. Reach out to friends, colleagues, various associates, current and former customers\/clients, vendors, fellow members of professional associations, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think of all the people you know, across various aspects of your personal and professional lives. Include people like your hair stylist or barber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Circle back to them and briefly apologize for not re-connecting sooner.<\/li><li>Find out what they\u2019re up to and update them on what you\u2019ve been doing. <\/li><li>But don\u2019t rudely burst into a request for them to help you get a job. <\/li><li>Reconnect first and revive the relationship.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Practice \u201cgive to get\u201d networking. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t expect favors without giving something in return. Do something nice for them first. Networking that works for everyone is all about helping, sharing, finding common ground, and being a good listener.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One suggestion when reconnecting is to send them a link to an article or blog post that is relevant to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\u2019ve connected with them a few times, you can ask them if they have any connections at your target companies.
