A powerful executive network combined with active networking is the best way to land your next gig.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For one thing, the people you meet through networking may be able to help you identify <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-network-into-the-goldmine-of-hidden-executive-jobs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8220;hidden jobs&#8221; at your target companies<\/a>. That is, unadvertised positions and new opportunities created around your unique promise of value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-do-i-rebuild-my-network-for-executive-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">You may have let your networking efforts slide<\/a> because you&#8217;ve been happily and securely employed, so you thought you didn&#8217;t need to keep networking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or, <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-network-into-executive-job\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">you may hate networking<\/a> so much that, even though you&#8217;re actively job hunting now, you avoid doing much of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whatever is keeping you from purposeful networking, remind yourself that NOT networking can lead to a prolonged job search with less chance of landing a dream job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Set yourself up to network well<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Get into good career management habits that will lead to better networking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Job search and career strategist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/megguiseppi_7-things-successful-executive-job-seekers-activity-7019269299311648768-4plS\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bernadette Pawlik<\/a> offered these words of wisdom, in a comment on a LinkedIn post of mine: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s something I&#8217;d like to share based upon my 20 plus years as a retained <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-find-executive-recruiters-specializing-in-your-niche\/\">executive recruiter:<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>From day one of your career, make an hour of connecting your priority. Be the person who sends the thank you note, the congrats.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make establishing yourself as a person of your word a priority\u2026 especially when it comes to helping others.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When you reach a certain compensation level, educate yourself on the functioning of retained executive search firms. There are 50 &#8220;top&#8221; ones, but over 3 thousand smaller ones. Learn who they are and how they work.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make sure you have an updated resume with these.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Leverage LinkedIn to introduce yourself to those 2 to 3 levels above your current role. Seek mentors\u2026we all need them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Follow the executive-level <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/use-job-boards-for-research-not-to-find-jobs\/\">job boards<\/a>. Not because you are &#8220;looking&#8221; but to learn what the most highly sought skills\/experiences are.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Create a <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/experts-debate-linkedin-vs-the-executive-resume\/\">LinkedIn profile<\/a> that is 75% factual, 25% personality. There is little &#8220;wiggle&#8221; room in executive hiring. And, what you have delivered in the last 10 years is what counts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Start with the people you already know<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/network.jpg\" alt=\"executive networking strategies\" class=\"wp-image-12597 lazyload\" style=\"width:838px;height:621px\" width=\"838\" height=\"621\"\/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/network.jpg\" alt=\"executive networking strategies\" class=\"wp-image-12597 lazyload\" style=\"width:838px;height:621px\" width=\"838\" height=\"621\" srcset=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/network.jpg 640w, https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/network-300x222.jpg 300w, https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/network-150x111.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 838px) 100vw, 838px\" \/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Smart-networking expert <a href=\"https:\/\/www.personalbrandingblog.com\/building-relationships-organically-part-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Liz Lynch<\/a> advises:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;Connect more deeply with more people who are already around you, those involved in the same activities, interested in the same issues, or pursuing the same goals. When you already share a common purpose with someone, the rest of the process of conversation and conversion flow more easily.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Reconnect with and revive your existing network. If you\u2019re like many executives I talk with, you\u2019ve neglected them because you had a job and didn\u2019t think you needed them or you just lost track of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This happens to the best of us. It\u2019s okay to circle back to them. Briefly apologize for not re-connecting sooner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Start compiling a list of people you want to reconnect with. If you <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-connect-on-linkedin-with-people-you-dont-know-and-get-action\/\">don\u2019t know<\/a> where they are now, search for them on LinkedIn and ask them to join your LinkedIn network. If they\u2019re not there, Google \u201ctheir name\u201d (in quotes) and find out how to contact them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Get to know those around you &#8211; your co-workers, vendors, customers, and people in other departments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reach out to former clients and vendors, professional associations, community groups and lifestyle groups. Check in with people and find out what they\u2019re up to and update them on what you\u2019ve been doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rely on your existing contacts to expand your network. Ask for their referrals and recommendations to their connections at your target companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cultivate and maintain relationships with <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/build-winning-relationships-with-executive-recruiters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">several executive recruiters<\/a> in your niche and industry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, check out industry trade shows and conferences, trade publications, and community events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re several months into a search and already connected with everyone in your circle at the beginning, give it another go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Career coach <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/2009\/10\/14\/job-search-employment-leadership-careers-hiring.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Eileen Wolkstein<\/a> said this in a interview on Forbes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;You may have been asking unfocused questions when you were at an earlier stage in your search. Since then, you&#8217;ve gathered new information and leads and new thoughts about what you want to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be specific in asking for help. Ask them for three good contacts and ask if they&#8217;d be willing to talk with those three people on your behalf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And when asking for help, &#8220;If you can&#8217;t give a coherent, responsible answer to the question, &#8216;How can I help you,&#8217; then you don&#8217;t have the right to ask for help.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Cast a far-reaching net to build out your existing executive network with fresh faces.<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/network-better.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12357 lazyload\" style=\"width:840px;height:427px\" width=\"840\" height=\"427\"\/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/network-better.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12357 lazyload\" style=\"width:840px;height:427px\" width=\"840\" height=\"427\"\/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some places and <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/top-10-ways-to-build-your-online-personal-brand-linkedin\/\">ways to connect online and in person:<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Search online for people who work at your target companies<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Find out where they hang out so you can position yourself in front of them. If they&#8217;re on <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/twitter-vs-linkedin-executive-job-search\/\">Twitter<\/a>, follow them, and re-tweet them. If they blog, comment on their blog posts in a way that reinforces your brand and promise of value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">LinkedIn<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The gold standard for executive networking. If you\u2019re not there already posting and commenting and\/or reacting to other people&#8217;s posts, participating in Groups, and making connections, it\u2019s time to get busy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Twitter<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Search for hiring decision makers and people who work at your target companies, along with executive recruiters, job search experts, and job boards. They&#8217;re tweeting job openings, offering advice and resources, and much more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Facebook and other social networks<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Each one offers its own benefits. Decide <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-much-social-media-is-enough\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">how much time you can allot to social networking<\/a> and which ones will work for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Get involved with relevant professional associations<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Hobnob with other subject matter experts and thought leaders. Join committees and communicate through their e-lists. Write articles within your areas of expertise for their newsletters and Websites. Mentor a new member and\/or less experienced professional. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Connect with more people<\/strong> <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Join or start your own <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/job-search-clubs-how-they-work-how-to-find-one\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">job search club<\/a>. Look for company alumni and military\/government &#8220;alumni&#8221; groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Connect on a local level by volunteering<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/the-power-of-volunteering-for-your-personal-brand-and-executive-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Volunteering in any way and to any extent<\/a> may put you elbow to elbow with industry-leading decision makers. Or these people may be connected in some way with your target companies or industries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tap into your areas of expertise to lead and\/or participate in community events, PTA efforts, organization <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/is-landing-a-board-of-directors-role-like-landing-any-other-executive-job\/\">Boards of Directors<\/a>, fundraising efforts, sports activities, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Don&#8217;t forget real-life connecting at networking events<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Networking in person comes easy to some but is agony for many, and can be especially <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/job-search-for-introverts-land-the-job-with-less-stress\/#no-stress-in-person-networking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stressful for introverts<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Executive job search strategist&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/feed\/update\/urn:li:activity:6815265250158415872\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Erin Kennedy<\/a>&nbsp;offered these tips in a LinkedIn update to effectively network in person less stressfully:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Choose events wisely.<\/strong>&nbsp;Research to find out what companies will be there. Decide if it is something you\u2019d really like to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Get there early.&nbsp;<\/strong>Whether it\u2019s a Zoom meeting or an in-person gathering, the earlier you arrive, chances are there won\u2019t be as many people and you can chat with the few that are there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t work the room.&nbsp;<\/strong>Plan on talking to five people \u2013 more if you are up to it. This way you know you have an \u201cout\u201d but still feel good that you talked to five people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ask questions.&nbsp;<\/strong>If you don\u2019t want to talk, listen! Most people like talking about themselves. This is networking without extending too much of yourself \u2013 yet the other person ends up thinking you are great!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Who will be there?<\/strong>&nbsp;Research to find out who will be there. Who do you want to talk to? What do they do? How will knowing them help you?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some ice-breakers for introverts that apply to anyone:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1. This is my first time here. Who do you think I need to meet?<br>2. I just got here. Did I miss anything?<br>3. What do you do?<br>4. How did you get into (whatever their career is)?<br>5. Do you like it?<br>6. Where did you get that (beautiful purse? lovely scarf? neat laptop?)?<br>7. Did you hit any traffic getting here? Be kind, take it slow, and practice &#8220;give to get&#8221; networking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Approach new contacts with the attitude &#8220;how can we help each other?&#8221;<\/strong> <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Don&#8217;t expect favors without giving something in return. Networking that works for everyone is all about helping, sharing, finding common ground, and being a good listener.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Tone down your introduction.<\/strong> <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Be sure your <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/what-is-personal-branding-do-i-need-a-personal-brand-for-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">personal brand<\/a> positioning statement \u2013 the dreaded \u201c30 second pitch\u201d \u2013 doesn&#8217;t sound too self-promotional. Make it vibrant, but keep it short and to the point. Practice it many times until it becomes second nature and flows easily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Be a good listener.<\/strong> <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>People remember those who give them that boost by being truly interested in what they have to say. <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/one-skill-every-job-seeker-should-have\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Good listeners<\/a> set themselves up for reciprocity in networking. They&#8217;re much more inclined to <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/4-linkedin-ways-to-keep-your-personal-brand-top-of-mind\/\">keep engaged listeners top of mind<\/a> when they hear of an opportunity that may be a good fit for them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Nurture relationships by staying in touch.<\/strong> <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Call just to say hello, with no hidden agenda. Send birthday, anniversary, and holiday cards by regular mail. Email them with links to blog posts and articles you know they&#8217;ll like. Let them know about upcoming industry events, trade shows and other events of interest. Follow them on Twitter and support them by re-tweeting their tweets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Be friendly and upbeat.<\/strong> <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Nobody likes a downer who constantly complains about how bad things are out there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A few more tips to build and maintain your executive network<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Stay top of mind with your connections by following up regularly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep track of key new contacts, collect business cards, and jot down pertinent notes immediately afterward to help you frame what you want to say to the people you follow up with.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Create a system to manage all your contacts, catalog specifics for each person, and build in reminders for yourself.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Build visibility by speaking at professional events, publishing articles online, <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/c-level-job-search-blogging-what-am-i-going-to-write-about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">blogging<\/a>, guest blogging, and commenting on blogs. New, valuable contacts will be drawn to you.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Try to get yourself in front of hiring decision makers and their circle.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Arm yourself with <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/best-ways-and-places-to-research-your-target-employers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">industry and company research<\/a> to help you speak intelligently about trends and issues impacting your target market.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Build relationships with executives who have similar and different competencies. Look toward forming co-mentorships in which you support each other.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Don&#8217;t forget one of the most neglected networking best-practices<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Say thank you a lot \u2013 in person, on paper, and digitally<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Nothing shows your appreciation better than a hand-written, regular-mailed <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/thank-you-notes-executive-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">thank you note<\/a> for an introduction, kindness or special gesture.
