When I take a look at their LinkedIn profiles, the reason is often immediately clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They&#8217;ve made mistakes with their profile or they neglected to do some very important things with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No question that LinkedIn is an excellent tool for both passive and proactive <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/find-the-best-executive-resume-writer-for-you-what-questions-to-ask\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"430\">executive job search<\/a> and career management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s how the passive vs. proactive thing works with LinkedIn:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Using LinkedIn PASSIVELY for executive job search and career management<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>So few people get it right with their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/megguiseppi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LinkedIn profiles<\/a>. If you create a <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/linkedin-personal-branding-executive-job-search\/\">fully fleshed out profile with the right information<\/a>, in the right places, you\u2019ll be way ahead of the game . . . even if you do nothing more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It will sit there drawing people to it (and you) and supporting the value you offer, without you lifting a finger . . . except to respond to InMails, messages and requests to connect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is not a particularly smart way to use LinkedIn. Even if you&#8217;re not job-hunting, you should continuously <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-connect-on-linkedin-with-people-you-dont-know-and-get-action\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"494\">connect with new people and network<\/a> with existing connections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But at least working on building the content in your profile is much better than leaving a bare-bones profile sitting there, doing very little for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For overall healthy career management, LinkedIn used proactively (and smartly) will better position you for good-fit opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Using LinkedIn PROACTIVELY for executive job search and career management<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When you\u2019re in active networking and job search mode, you need to make use of the LinkedIn \u201cactive\u201d features that help you connect and stay top-of-mind with people, and&nbsp;demonstrate your thought leadership and subject matter expertise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of&nbsp;my c-suite and senior-level executive clients are not actively job-searching. But they wisely realize that things can change at any time, so they want their LinkedIn profiles to be in place, and their personal marketing documents (resume, biography, etc.) to be at-the-ready.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They understand that they need great <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/7-reasons-not-to-copy-someone-elses-linkedin-profile\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">content in their LinkedIn profile<\/a>, to help them get found by executive recruiters and their target employers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And they understand that being proactive means they need to <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/keep-your-personal-brand-top-of-mind-with-linkedin-updates\/\">regularly post updates<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/showcase-your-personal-brand-with-linkedin-comments\/\">comment on other peoples posts and articles<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that you understand how to use LinkedIn both passively and proactively, let&#8217;s look at how to make your <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/should-you-display-opentowork-on-your-linkedin-profile\/\">LinkedIn profile work<\/a> better for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5 things that will sabotage the effectiveness of your LinkedIn profile<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. These typically represent your key areas of expertise, or \u201chard skills\u201d, such as Change Management, Product Development, Emerging Technology Launch, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Strategically placed, the right keywords elevate your search rankings in LinkedIn\u2019s search engine, increasing your <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-make-your-branded-linkedin-profile-professional-headline-seo-friendly\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"496\">profile\u2019s Search Engine Optimization<\/a> (SEO) and significantly boosting the likelihood you\u2019ll be found and considered by them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The content in certain sections \u2013 typically those that sit higher on the web page containing your profile \u2013 rank highest with LinkedIn\u2019s search algorithm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Make sure <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/linkedin-keywords-get-found-online\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">these top-of-the-page sections<\/a> are load with the right keywords \u2013 profile headline, your name (where you can add certifications to your last name), Featured section, job titles, and the About section. But also strive to use plenty of your relevant keywords throughout your profile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An important caveat about keyword density. Always be mindful that human beings are also reading your profile, so make sure that your profile content overall is an interesting read.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Chemistry is very important to them. Don\u2019t be afraid to give a feel for your personality, passions, and values. Branding also makes for interesting reading, unlike the possibly hundreds of similar, lifeless LinkedIn profiles these people come across.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. And the better picture you paint of the value you offer your target employers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the more content in your profile, the higher it is likely to rank in LinkedIn&#8217;s search engine, making you more findable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/help-linkedin-skills-endorsements-mess\/\">LinkedIn offers&nbsp;many different kinds of profile sections<\/a> to fill with content. Look around for them and use all that apply to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. People will wonder what you\u2019re hiding. They may wonder whether yours is a spam profile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As I\u2019ve said, personal branding is all about creating chemistry, or emotional connection. People connect easier and believe content more when it\u2019s accompanied by the person\u2019s photo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They\u2019re more likely to reach out to someone when they can \u201csee\u201d the person. Your photo helps to personalize and humanize your brand-driven content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Use an appropriate photo in which you\u2019re smiling and looking into the camera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5. Then they promptly forgot about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They never went back to fully flesh out their profile, keep it updated, and align it with their changing career goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You need to revisit your profile every few months and make sure it will position you to reach your career goals.
