But, based on his career history, I knew my client had to be around 50. He obviously used a stock photo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sure enough, he told me he and some colleagues thought it would be fun to put up this misleading photo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What he didn\u2019t realize was that when I Googled his name \u2013 which executive recruiters and employers were sure to do as well \u2013 real photos of him came up in various places. He didn\u2019t look anything like his <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/5-deadly-linkedin-mistakes\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"255\">LinkedIn profile photo<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think about how this discrepancy would impact his credibility and reputation. People could think all kinds of things about him, including questioning whether his was a legitimate profile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His blunder could even be worse than having no photo at all which is, in my opinion, a <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/deadly-linkedin-mistake-anemic-incomplete-profile\/\">deadly mistake<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why You Need a LinkedIn Profile Photo<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/business\/talent\/blog\/product-tips\/tips-for-taking-professional-linkedin-profile-pictures\">LinkedIn says<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Your profile picture is a key element of your <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/5-reasons-your-linkedin-profile-isnt-working\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"488\">LinkedIn presence<\/a>. Our research shows that just having a picture makes your <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/15-savvy-tips-to-boost-linkedin-profile-views\/\">profile 14 times more likely to be viewed<\/a> by others.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>They&#8217;ve even included profile photos as a criteria for their &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/help\/linkedin\/answer\/391\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Profile Strength meter (opens in a new tab)\">Profile Strength meter<\/a>&#8220;. When you include a photo and their other criteria, you&#8217;ll bump up to an All-Star profile rating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although some <a aria-label=\"LinkedIn members fear discrimination (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/does-my-linkedin-profile-really-need-a-photo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LinkedIn members fear discrimination<\/a> based on age, appearance, ethnic background, etc. if they include their photos, I still advise that it\u2019s best to have one. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s no doubt that discrimination exists in <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/top-10-executive-job-search-posts-from-2015\/\">job search<\/a>, so you\u2019ll need to decide for yourself, but there are risks involved with NOT having a photo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/why-the-right-executive-recruiters-ignore-your-linkedin-profile-and-you\/\">executive recruiters and hiring decision makers at the companies you&#8217;re targeting will see your LinkedIn profile<\/a> before they see anything else about you. Put yourself in the shoes of these people assessing your candidacy through your <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/should-you-display-opentowork-on-your-linkedin-profile\/\">LinkedIn profile<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first thing they\u2019ll notice when they land on your profile is your photo . . . or lack of one. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have NO photo, their initial thought will likely be \u201c<em>What is this person trying to hide?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Personal Branding Matters <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Personal branding is an essential piece in <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-build-personal-brand-content-for-executive-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">developing the content for your LinkedIn profile<\/a>. Branding helps you differentiate the qualifications and qualities you possess from your competitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Branding also helps you make an emotional connection. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People connect easier and believe content more when it\u2019s accompanied by the author\u2019s photo. They\u2019re more likely to reach out to someone when they can \u201csee\u201d the person. Your photo helps to personalize and humanize your brand-driven content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another issue associated with not having a photo \u2212&nbsp;your profile may be flagged as a fake, especially if there\u2019s very little content within the profile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Choose your LinkedIn profile photo wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It follows you everywhere on the site, with any of your activities, not just when people click through to your profile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Select an appealing photo that strikes the right image and professional tone for your industry, niche, and personality. Executives typically wear suits, but if your leadership style is relaxed, then a more casual, but still professional, look may be right for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/business\/talent\/blog\/product-tips\/tips-for-taking-professional-linkedin-profile-pictures\">LinkedIn&#8217;s tips<\/a> for taking your profile photo: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Pick a photo that looks like you<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use a high-resolution image<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make sure your face takes up at least 60% of the frame<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be the only person in the picture<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Get someone else to take the picture for you<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Take a photo with the right expression<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid distracting backgrounds<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wear what you\u2019d wear to work<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Take the photo in soft, natural light<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use filters wisely<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bad LinkedIn Profile Photo Choices That Can Hurt Your Chances<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A selfie taken in front of the bathroom mirror. (Be careful with any selfie.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A group photo of you and colleagues. Which person is you?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A photo with you and your darling child or children.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A party photo of you.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A photo of you holding a beer or other obvious alcoholic beverage, at a barbecue.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A lewd-ish photo of you inappropriately or partially dressed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A photo of scenery, but no you.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A photo of someone other than you \u2013 like my client noted above.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>And here&#8217;s what <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/help\/linkedin\/answer\/a1377087\/profile-photo-guidelines-and-conditions\">LinkedIn says<\/a> you shouldn&#8217;t use for your profile photo: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Company logos<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avatars, emojis, or cartoons<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Landscapes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Animals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Words or phrases<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stock images or photos<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Childhood or baby photos (or other images that would not be recognizable to current or potential connections)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You don&#8217;t necessarily have to go to a professional photographer, but that&#8217;s not a bad idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can have a friend take a headshot of you smiling, both showing teeth and closed-mouthed \u2013 inside and outside. And try various clothing choices. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then sit down with all the possibilities and a few friends and\/or colleagues.
