Things can change in an instant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wise people understand that we\u2019re all always in perpetual job search, whether or not we\u2019ve been steadily employed throughout our careers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They know that they should always keep their networks alive, and be accessible and open to new opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means continuously communicating your personal brand and unique value to the kinds of employers you would want to work for next, mainly through your <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/yikes-my-linkedin-profile-is-missing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LinkedIn profile<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Make sure your <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/linkedin-personal-branding-executive-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LinkedIn profile is complete<\/a> and contains lots of content optimized with your <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/keywords-in-job-search-how-important-are-they\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">relevant key words and phrases<\/a>. This way, your profile will help you get found, on an ongoing basis, by recruiters and hiring decision makers at the companies that interest you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stay proactive with LinkedIn, in particular, but also with other <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-your-social-media-use-can-sabotage-your-executive-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">social media<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/are-you-tweaking-your-out-dated-executive-resume-to-death\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">your resume<\/a> and other personal marketing materials up to date and at the ready.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s all well and good, but most of us don\u2019t do these things. So let\u2019s say you haven\u2019t, and suddenly you\u2019ve been laid off or fired. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What can you do when you&#8217;re unemployed to catch up with branding your value to companies you\u2019ll now have to actively pursue?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4 Ways to Get Your Career Back on Track When You&#8217;re Unemployed<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Work on targeting and your personal brand messaging<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Haven\u2019t done anything yet to define your brand and create targeted personal marketing materials (LinkedIn profile, resume, <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/why-is-it-so-hard-to-write-my-own-c-level-career-brand-biography\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">biography<\/a>, etc.)?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Start with <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/7-tips-to-build-your-executive-job-search-target-companies-list\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">targeting<\/a> and researching specific companies that will be a mutual good fit. This is a good time to <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/guide-to-informational-interviews-for-executive-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">conduct informational interviews<\/a> to learn more about the companies you&#8217;re targeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Get to <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/think-like-an-executive-resume-branding-pro-build-your-personal-brand\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">work on your personal brand<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/worksheets-personal-branding-and-executive-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">executive job search worksheets<\/a> will help you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Rebuild and expand your network<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-do-i-rebuild-my-network-for-executive-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reconnect with everyone you can think of<\/a>, in any walk of life, and let them know your career goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Search the LinkedIn company profiles of those you want to target, look for employees you may know, and invite them to connect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ask everyone you know if they know anyone at your target companies, and ask for an introduction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, look for senior <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/who-is-an-executive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">level executives at these companies<\/a> who may be hiring decision makers, and reach out to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Learn how to network your way into the <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-network-into-the-goldmine-of-hidden-executive-jobs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">goldmine of \u201chidden\u201d jobs<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Find ways to fill potential employment gaps, before they happen<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It can take many months to find a new good fit job. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you&#8217;re unemployed, you need to do some kind of work \u2013 whether or not you receive compensation \u2013 to <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-deal-with-employment-gaps-in-your-resume-and-linkedin-profile\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">avoid major gaps in your LinkedIn profile and resume<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Typically, things get sticky with gaps of one year or more. So do what you can to keep that from happening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some suggestions. Do your best to find work that is consistent with your personal brand and unique value proposition to your target employers. Then this fill-in work experience will be of greater value to them:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/cfo-executive-resume-employment-gap-is-volunteering-really-a-job\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Volunteer<\/a> \u2013 charities, schools, hospitals, civic groups, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Find consulting gigs or short-term interim work<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Secure temp work<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Get comfortable with social media<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Now you\u2019ll probably have the time to learn about and spend professional time on&nbsp;LinkedIn, Twitter, and other social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Use my <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/checklist-optimize-linkedin-executive-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Essential LinkedIn Checklist<\/a> to fully leverage this most important social network for executive job search.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/twitter-vs-linkedin-executive-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Get a handle on Twitter<\/a> and why it&#8217;s a good complement to LinkedIn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Work on <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/10-best-ways-to-build-your-personal-brand-online\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">building your online presence<\/a>, to be more visible and \u201cfindable\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Some More Proactive Things to Do When You&#8217;re Unemployed<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Job hunting will take up a fair amount of your time, but it&#8217;s wise to carve out some time to pursue things that will contribute to your professional growth, and set you up for career success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many other things you can do with that time, along with my suggestions above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.makeuseof.com\/things-to-do-while-unemployed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MakeUseOf.com<\/a> offers some proactive things you can do to increase your chances of landing your next job: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Track your schedule.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>By organizing your day, you&#8217;ll stay focused and motivated, and it will be easier to measure your progress. Set aside specific times to work on your goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Learn in-demand skills.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Research and identify in-demand skills in your industry or the job market you&#8217;re targeting, and upgrade\/polish your existing skills or learn new ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Develop a personal website or portfolio.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A personal website or online portfolio can showcase your skills, projects, and achievements. Platforms like Indeed, LinkedIn Jobs, and Glassdoor provide access to a wide range of job listings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Get a mentor.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A mentor can offer guidance and direction, easing the challenges and uncertainties. They can assist you in evaluating your skills and goals, providing insights into career paths that align with your strengths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Look for professionals in your industry who have achieved success and are willing to share their knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bottom Line<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Unemployment happens to most of us, and to the best of us. It\u2019s often no reflection on you and your performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your best defense is to be prepared BEFORE it ever happens.
