The post included some of the worst things executives in job search do, or neglect to do, on <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"LinkedIn (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/megguiseppi\" target=\"_blank\">LinkedIn<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In revisiting and updating that post, I&#8217;ve compiled here what I consider to be the 5 worst mistakes. But they usually have only a minimal profile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Too many of them have very little content in the many profile&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/help-linkedin-skills-endorsements-mess\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sections LinkedIn<\/a>&nbsp;provides. And the content that IS there, tends to be generic and doesn\u2019t distinguish them from their competitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are 4 reasons a too-brief LinkedIn profile can actually hurt your executive job search:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Doesn&#8217;t provide enough information to help hiring professional see your good fit<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lacks <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/worksheets-personal-branding-and-executive-job-search\/\">personal branding and chemistry<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Marks you as out of date with social media<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Decreases your &#8220;findability&#8221; online<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mistake #2: <a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/deadly-linkedin-mistake-neglecting-seo-and-keywords\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Neglecting SEO and Keywords<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/seo-592740_640-1-e1550689615982.png\" alt=\"LinkedIn SEO\" class=\"wp-image-5415 lazyload\"\/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"619\" src=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/seo-592740_640-1-e1550689615982.png\" alt=\"LinkedIn SEO\" class=\"wp-image-5415 lazyload\"\/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Being mindful of Personal SEO, and LinkedIn Profile SEO in particular, makes LinkedIn an especially powerful tool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Executive recruiters and hiring decision makers at your target companies search LinkedIn for candidates using relevant keywords.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The more of the right keywords your profile contains, the more likely your <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/yikes-my-linkedin-profile-is-missing\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"662\">profile will rank higher with LinkedIn&#8217;s<\/a> search engine. This boosts the likelihood you\u2019ll be found and considered by these key people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if you passively sit back and don\u2019t take advantage of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/showcase-your-personal-brand-with-linkedin-comments\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">many networking activities and features<\/a>&nbsp;LinkedIn offers, a fully fleshed out, keyword-rich, SEO-friendly LinkedIn profile will help you land a great-fit gig.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your profile will sit there, drawing the right people to it, and to the unique value you offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But I strongly urge you not to be passive with LinkedIn, when you\u2019re actively job-hunting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mistake #3: <a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/deadly-linkedin-mistake-generic-short-summary-section\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Boring, Generic, Short About Section<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/so-what-1462746_640.png\" alt=\"boring, short LinkedIn About section\" class=\"wp-image-9500 lazyload\"\/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/so-what-1462746_640.png\" alt=\"boring, short LinkedIn About section\" class=\"wp-image-9500 lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/so-what-1462746_640.png 640w, https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/so-what-1462746_640-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/so-what-1462746_640-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/so-what-1462746_640-100x100.png 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>What does your LinkedIn About section say about you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Does it evoke a <em>\u201cMeh\u201d<\/em>, or does it scream \u201c<em>You need me in your compan<\/em>y\u201d? Will it bore people, or will it attract them to you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the following things are happening with your About section, people reading it are probably thinking <em>&#8220;Meh&#8221;<\/em>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It includes a drab mere paragraph or two.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All that\u2019s there is a string of keywords (that may or may not be relevant to your target employers) padded with just enough verbs to make the sentences flow.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You have some of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/keywords-in-job-search-how-important-are-they\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the right keywords<\/a>&nbsp;in it, but the minimal amount of information there does nothing to differentiate you.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The content is generic and could apply to just about any other job seeker like you. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The same measly paragraphs could be plunked down into the profile of just about any other executive doing the same kind of work.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, your About section doesn\u2019t make you stand out in a positive way. And if you don\u2019t stand out, people assessing you (recruiters and other hiring professionals) are likely to pass right by your profile in search of others who appear more qualified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if you are more than qualified for the jobs you\u2019re seeking, an anemic LinkedIn Profile will do little to nothing to make that clear to the right people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Use as much of the space allowed (2,600 characters and spaces) to increase your LinkedIn search ranking. More content also helps generate chemistry better and differentiate your unique ROI for your target employers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mistake #4: <a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/deadly-linkedin-mistake-no-professional-photo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">No Profile Photo (or Headshot)<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/recruiter.jpg\" alt=\"LinkedIn profile photo\" class=\"wp-image-18786 lazyload\" style=\"width:840px;height:auto\"\/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"486\" src=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/recruiter.jpg\" alt=\"LinkedIn profile photo\" class=\"wp-image-18786 lazyload\" style=\"width:840px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/recruiter.jpg 640w, https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/recruiter-300x228.jpg 300w, https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/recruiter-150x114.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/business\/talent\/blog\/product-tips\/tips-for-taking-professional-linkedin-profile-pictures\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LinkedIn says<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cYour profile picture is a key element of your LinkedIn presence. Our research shows that just having a picture makes your&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/15-savvy-tips-to-boost-linkedin-profile-views\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">profile 14 times more likely to be viewed<\/a>&nbsp;by others.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>They\u2019ve even included profile photos as a criteria for their \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/help\/linkedin\/answer\/391\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Profile Strength meter<\/a>\u201c. When you include a photo and their other criteria, you\u2019ll bump up to an All-Star profile rating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although some&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/does-my-linkedin-profile-really-need-a-photo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LinkedIn members fear discrimination<\/a>&nbsp;based on age, appearance, ethnic background, etc. if they include their photos, I still advise that it\u2019s best to have one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s no doubt that discrimination exists in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/top-10-executive-job-search-posts-from-2015\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">job search<\/a>, so you\u2019ll need to decide for yourself, but there are risks involved with NOT having a photo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/why-the-right-executive-recruiters-ignore-your-linkedin-profile-and-you\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">executive recruiters and hiring decision makers at the companies you\u2019re targeting will see your LinkedIn profile<\/a>&nbsp;before they see anything else about you.
