Like it or not, the digital age has impacted job search.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some people resist putting themselves \u201cout there\u201d because they\u2019re concerned about safety and privacy issues. I get that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What happens when you have no online footprint, or not much of one?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Without a diverse online presence that reinforces your personal brand and value to the companies you\u2019re targeting, <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-get-executive-recruiters-attention-with-the-right-email-messages\/\">executive recruiters<\/a> and hiring professionals may pass you right by, in favor of others who DO have a vibrant online footprint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These people source and assess talent by what they find about them online. They\u2019re looking for plenty of information about each candidate, and they want \u201csocial proof\u201d, to validate the claims these candidates have made in their resumes and other personal marketing materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re in a <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/online-reputation-management-faqs-for-executive-job-search\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"82\">job search and have little or no online presence<\/a> \u2013 that is, a good number of positive, solid search results when your name is Googled \u2013 <em>you may be invisible to them<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>OR, if you have a common name, you need to clearly distinguish yourself online among the sea of same-named people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>OR, if you have the same name as someone who has done something awful to discredit their name (<em>and thereby your name<\/em>), you need to distinguish yourself from what exists online about them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More and more of your competitors are working on building online presence, and have embraced LinkedIn, at the very least, as a foundation. Just to keep pace with them, you\u2019ve got to match their efforts. So start with LinkedIn, but don\u2019t stop there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think about this. Since so many qualified candidates DO have fully-fleshed out, keyword-rich <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/megguiseppi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LinkedIn profiles<\/a> but not much else online, how much better do you think you\u2019ll look, if search results for \u201cyour name\u201d bring up several more web pages with added information that will be useful to people assessing you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><span style=\"color:#0d7b14\" class=\"has-inline-color\">What does it take to build a strong online presence?<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Take a look at your own online footprint right now. Type your name into a Google search, and see what you find.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Do you \u201cown\u201d the first several search results, or at least several on the first page?<\/li><li>Or does it take several pages of results before you get to anything related to you?<\/li><li>What information will people find about you when they click on those search results?<\/li><li>Is that information what you need them to know about you and your potential value to the companies or organizations you\u2019re targeting?<\/li><li>If you find information that will discredit you or sabotage your online reputation, you need to work on getting those web pages changed or taken down. Or try to supplant those negative search results with positive ones.<\/li><li>Do your search results contain plenty of your relevant keywords and phrases, so that those web pages are optimized for search engines (or SEO-friendly)?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Here are 5 components for a strong online presence:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Relevance \u2014&nbsp;Quality \u2014&nbsp;Diversity \u2014&nbsp;Volume \u2014&nbsp;Consistency<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Relevance<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You should know, before starting your job search, which companies or which kinds of companies you\u2019re targeting, and what information about you is relevant to them and will resonate with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Quality<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Be careful what you post on social networks, or anywhere online. Continuously monitor your online presence. Get used to self-Googling regularly (about once a week) to see what exists on the first several pages of search results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Diversity<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You need a good mix of static profiles\/web pages and vibrant real-time content. A few online profiles that all contain the same content won\u2019t cut it \u2013 change up the information in each one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Volume<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep working on building more and more search results for your name and increase your number of diverse and accurate results on the first few pages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Consistency<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You should already have done the initial work of defining your personal brand, built around what will resonate with your target companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Express that same personal brand message, across all communications channels and social media you decide to use. I don\u2019t mean that you should use the same information over and over. As I mentioned above, mix it up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>And here are 5 things to remember about online presence and personal brand management:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Keywords are critical! Make sure you have lots of the right keywords, in the right places.<\/li><li>Build diverse content in various places online.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/why-you-need-to-self-google-once-a-week\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Self-Google regularly<\/a> to monitor your online presence and reputation.<\/li><li>Keep adding new content to new web pages, to build volume.<\/li><li>Don&#8217;t wait until the last minute to build online presence.
