The impact of COVID, death, mass lay-offs, cut-hours etc., have led to communities of people experiencing depression, lack of motivation, worthlessness, unemployment, grief from death etc. and it&#8217;s important to consider that before judgement.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>A worthy candidate who fits the need of the role is worthy of a call to find out there [sic] story. The workforce has tremendously been impacted by this pandemic and recession, so please remember to have some compassion and grace for our applicants who&#8217;ve gained the courage to get back out there and assert themselves, after these past trying years.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Kelli Hrivnak:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>&#8220;Gaps have become less stigmatized over the last few years as employers are more empathetic due to the instability of the market and acknowledgment of life changes impacting our availability and time.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>I recognize not everyone believes it&#8217;s an employer&#8217;s business to ask or know about the reasons behind gaps\/jumps, but acknowledging and controlling the narrative of our journey (rather than leaving it up for assumption) may provide a better outcome. The focus should be on how you add value rather than dwelling on the gap.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Heather Kick-Abrahamson:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>&#8220;There are many reasons a person may have a job gap. It doesn&#8217;t mean that they won&#8217;t be an amazing employee. If I love their experience, I could care less if there is a job gap. There is generally a good reason for it and I am not the one to judge.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>But here&#8217;s a cautionary note from recruiter LeShan Witherspoon:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>&#8220;Wait, the phrase went away? Not in my world. Much to my frustration and dismay. If I had a nickel for every time a hiring manager has said the phrase:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;they look too jumpy&#8221;<br>&#8220;There&#8217;s no stability on their resume&#8221;<br>&#8220;why are there gaps in their work history&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>I could have bought Twitter.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>It&#8217;s like no one knows that the world shut down then got flipped on its side and shaken.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>It was annoying in the &#8216;before times.&#8217; Now it&#8217;s just ignorant.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"deal-with-employment-gaps\"><strong>How To Deal with Employment Gaps<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/resume-blunder11-1.jpg\" alt=\"resume employment gaps\" class=\"wp-image-1422 lazyload\" width=\"415\" height=\"473\"\/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/resume-blunder11-1.jpg\" alt=\"resume employment gaps\" class=\"wp-image-1422 lazyload\" width=\"415\" height=\"473\"\/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Even though more hiring professionals are less concerned with gaps these days, that could change. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We could go back to the unfair practice of valuing employed candidates over those who are currently unemployed or have previous gaps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And there are still enough recruiters and hiring managers who DO let gaps weigh heavily in their decision making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Overll, it&#8217;s best to cover those gaps, if at all possible to legitimately do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;ve outlined some ways to do that below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Kinds-of-employment-gaps\">Options For Various Kinds of Employment Gaps<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Are you a stay-at-home caregiver?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have an employment gap because you&#8217;ve been caring for a family member, <a href=\"https:\/\/careerpivot.com\/2021\/your-career-pandemic-recovery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Marc Miller<\/a> of Career Pivot has some suggestions: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>&#8220;Employers are presently more accepting of a career gap. That is as long as you can explain you were doing something productive, gaining new skills, and staying competitive. You will need to reframe your year(s) of being out of the workforce in job-related terminology.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>He noted some of the multiple employment roles with transferrable skills that caregivers typically fill:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Project Manager<\/strong> \u2013 They have to coordinate with the many tasks dealing with Medicare, doctors, hospitals, nursing facilities, medication, and many other arcane complexities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Transportation Coordinator<\/strong> \u2013 Many who are caring for their parents also have children still at home. Figuring out how everyone gets to where they need to be while at the same time caring for an elderly parent can be mind-boggling.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Financial Planner <\/strong>\u2013 If you&#8217;re the caregiver of an elderly parent or relative, you&#8217;re probably managing their finances. And anyone who has had to probate a will or act as the executor of a will can tell you how incredibly complicated it is.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">LinkedIn has options for stay-at-home caregiving<\/mark><\/strong> <strong>and other employment gaps<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To accommodate all the people who have temporarily stopped working for a wide range of reasons, LinkedIn has added <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/help\/linkedin\/answer\/a597655\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Career Break<\/a> options to fill the gap. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can add a new profile section (click on &#8220;Add profile section&#8221; in your introduction section at the top) and choose from these options (in the drop-down menu under &#8220;Core&#8221;):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Bereavement<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Career transition<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Caregiving<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Full-time parenting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gap year<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Layoff\/position eliminated<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Health\/well-being<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Personal goal pursuit<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Professional development<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Relocation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Retirement<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Travel<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Voluntary work<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>According to LinkedIn:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>&#8220;You can select a specific type of career break or leave the career type blank and add details in the description section. Adding a Career Break is optional and will be visible to logged-in LinkedIn members.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Other employment types to fill gaps appear under &#8220;Add experience&#8221;, after you click on &#8220;Add profile section&#8221; and then &#8220;Add position&#8221;, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Full-time<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Part-time<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Self-employed<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Freelance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contract<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Internship<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Apprenticeship<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Seasonal<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The self-employed and contract options will apply to you if you&#8217;re doing consulting work to fill the gap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"career-experts-on-employment-gaps\">Career Experts Discuss How To Overcome Employment Gaps<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/feedback-2990424_640.jpg\" alt=\"experts on employment gaps\" class=\"wp-image-12256 lazyload\" width=\"814\" height=\"542\"\/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/feedback-2990424_640.jpg\" alt=\"experts on employment gaps\" class=\"wp-image-12256 lazyload\" width=\"814\" height=\"542\" srcset=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/feedback-2990424_640.jpg 640w, https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/feedback-2990424_640-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/feedback-2990424_640-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/feedback-2990424_640-600x400.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 814px) 100vw, 814px\" \/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Several <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/find-the-best-executive-resume-writer-for-you-where-and-how-to-search\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"405\">career experts, recruiters and hiring managers<\/a> weighed in on LinkedIn on how job seekers should approach breaks in work history: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Be transparent about any breaks in your work history resulting from the pandemic.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prepare a narrative around how you spent the time outside the workforce.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>However, consider the pros and cons of mentioning the reason for the gap in your resume.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The NY Times columnist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/07\/07\/business\/roxane-gay-work-advice-office-politics.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Roxane Gay<\/a> noted: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>People with <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-write-an-irresistible-c-level-executive-resume-in-10-steps\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"856\">resume gaps<\/a> don\u2019t have to share very personal reasons they stepped away from their professional lives, but they do need to account for that time in some way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If, during an employment gap, you started a business or went back to school or engaged in some other form of professional development, talk about that. If you focused on raising children, or cared for sick relatives, share that information. If you took time off and played video games or learned to knit or gardened or otherwise cared for yourself in ways employers might not value, be creative in your explanation without lying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Employers mostly care about gaps because they want to trust that a new employee will be reliable and a worthy investment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"tip-for-employment-gaps\">A Simple Tip for Employment Gaps<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s difficult to fill in past employment gaps, after the fact. Savvy executives plan ahead to accommodate or shorten potential gaps, should they arise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But I can offer one strategy to downplay past employment gaps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">On both your resume and LinkedIn profile, use years for employment length, not months. <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is standard practice and can cover up fairly long gaps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For example, if your career history includes a gap like this:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Company X \u2013 May, 2008 to February, 2017<br>Company Y \u2013 September, 2018 to Present<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Switch to years only:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Company X \u2013 2008 to 2017<br>Company Y \u2013 2018 to Present<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The actual gap of more than one year is not at all obvious. Of course, never lie about dates.
