But they\u2019re ready to explore new and challenging opportunities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But they don&#8217;t have a modern <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/4-reasons-you-cant-write-your-own-executive-resume\/\">executive resume<\/a>, and they don&#8217;t know what that looks like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">One Misstep Many Executives Make with Their Resume<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Eager to land as soon as possible, they manage to locate that 10 (or 15, or 20) year old resume, and begin updating it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The problem? Many of them do the update <em>within the framework of that outdated, limiting document.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They don\u2019t understand that today\u2019s resume is a marketing document, designed for the digital age \u2013 not a career history merely outlining job responsibilities, with a few achievements thrown in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if they\u2019ve seen modern resumes that stand out and make the candidate shine, they often don\u2019t know how to craft one for themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Modern Executive Resume is Not Easy To Write<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve found that even CMOs (Chief Marketing Officers), and other marketing experts, have a hard time <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/7-deadly-sins-of-executive-resume-writing\/\">writing their resumes<\/a>. They\u2019re often embarrassed that they don\u2019t know how to market themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To be fair, how could they possibly grasp all that\u2019s involved with <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/7-things-i-learned-about-resume-writing-that-changed-everything\/\">resume writing<\/a> strategy, when they\u2019ve probably written only one resume . . . their own?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It takes years of study, training and practice for professionals like myself to get a handle on this nuanced, complicated and challenging kind of content writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A modern resume . . <em>one that will help you compete in the digital age<\/em> . . . adds many components to that so-yesterday document you pulled out of a yellowing file folder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Here\u2019s the best executive resume writing strategy:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Targeting and research<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/best-ways-and-places-to-research-your-target-employers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Target specific employers and research them<\/a> to determine the specific things that make you a good-fit for specific current needs of theirs. Don\u2019t think about <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/the-biggest-executive-resume-writing-mistake\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"530\">writing your resume<\/a> before you do this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Personal brand development<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Differentiate your unique value proposition by defining and communicating your <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/worksheets-personal-branding-and-executive-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"personal brand (opens in a new tab)\">personal brand<\/a>. Sameness won\u2019t \u201csell\u201d you. Differentiation will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Content development<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Write <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"brand-reinforcing content (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-build-personal-brand-content-for-executive-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\">brand-reinforcing content<\/a> that will resonate with your target employers. Make them care about you, and clearly see that they should speak with you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Content positioning<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Be mindful of above-the-fold branding, to capture attention immediately with the first glance. Make the top part of page one (sometimes called the &#8220;summary&#8221; or &#8220;executive profile&#8221;) stand on its own as your <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/elevate-your-executive-resume-from-bland-to-brand\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"448\">personal brand<\/a> calling card. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Keywords<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Identify the right, relevant keywords, which usually represent your key strengths or areas of expertise. Be sure to stoke plenty of your keywords in your <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/executive-resume-ats-applicant-tracking-systems-need-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">ATS (Applicant Tracking System<\/a>)-friendly version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Examples<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Include specific examples of contributions you\u2019ve made that support your good-fit candidacy. Building <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-c-a-r-storytelling-gives-executive-resume-branding-zing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">career &#8220;stories&#8221;<\/a> is a good way to do this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Digitize<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Place hyperlinks to social networks (especially LinkedIn) in your contact information, but only if you\u2019re active on these sites. Include links within other resume sections to relevant online articles or posts you\u2019ve written, or been quoted in. Link to your employers\u2019 websites in the Experience section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Format for Readability<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Include plenty of white space and use an <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/whats-the-best-executive-resume-format-and-length\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"easy-to-read, attractive format (opens in a new tab)\">easy-to-read, attractive format<\/a>. Remember that your digital <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/is-your-executive-resume-an-interesting-read\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"675\">resume is probably being read<\/a> on a small screen. Make it as easy as possible for people assessing you to find and read what they need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">10 things that should NOT be in your executive resume:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Your physical address, especially on any resume you\u2019ll post online. People can piece together a lot about you with this information, and potentially <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/the-online-safety-and-privacy-dilemma-in-executive-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">compromise your safety<\/a>.<\/li><li>An objective statement. Focus the top of your resume \u2013 that above-the-fold, prime real estate \u2013 on showcasing your value to target employers.<\/li><li>Professional references. Keep them on a separate sheet, to provide when\/if asked for them.<\/li><li>Out-dated technology expertise and other non-relevant areas of expertise, including non-relevant languages.<\/li><li>Personal information such as marital status and number of children. This may be acceptable in some countries, but not the U.S.<\/li><li>Hobbies, unless they\u2019re deeply related to the work you will do for your target employers.<\/li><li>Your GPA and college activities, if you graduated more than 10 years ago.<\/li><li>Salary history. Don&#8217;t play your cards before you get into an interview, and can negotiate.<\/li><li>Anemic, brand-diluting phrases like &#8220;responsible for&#8221;, &#8220;results-oriented&#8221; and &#8220;visionary leader&#8221;.<\/li><li>Any typos and grammatical errors. Proofread diligently and have others proofread your resume, too.
