An executive resume is typically pretty boring, because of the inherent constraints in terms of formatting, length and necessary content . . . or so it would seem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A resume usually starts with some kind of summary section that is a repository for lifeless <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/keywords-in-job-search-how-important-are-they\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">relevant keywords and phrases<\/a>, representing key areas of expertise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Experience section follows, often hitting only on a list of duties and responsibilities . . . maybe with a few achievements sprinkled in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Don\u2019t get me wrong. Those things need to be there.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, many <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/are-you-tweaking-your-out-dated-executive-resume-to-death\/\">resumes stop<\/a> there, and neglect any content that breathes life into them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These kinds of <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/7-things-i-learned-about-resume-writing-that-changed-everything\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"537\">resumes can be boring to write<\/a>, but even more boring to read for the people tasked with assessing perhaps hundreds of potential candidates at any one time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think of these people (recruiters and other hiring professionals) having to read all those tired resumes and trying to sift through the dull muck to find a gem of a candidate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Always write your executive resume for the reader.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the first rules of resume writing is to be empathetic:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;Write with the reader in mind. Put yourself in the shoes of the people who will be reading it. Make it easy for them to find the kind of information about you that you need them to know.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>This is why starting with <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/executive-job-search-research-your-target-employers\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"681\">targeting and research<\/a> is so important. That&#8217;s the only way you&#8217;ll find the information about specific employers that you need to know, to <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-write-compelling-executive-resume-bullet-points-with-examples\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"679\">write a compelling resume<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s the only way you&#8217;ll know what it is about you specifically, that makes you a good fit for your target employers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Doesn&#8217;t it make sense that, if your resume stands out from the rest not only because you&#8217;ve made it easy for them to assess your qualifications but you&#8217;ve also made it an interesting read, that more people will actually read it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">To make your executive resume interesting, lean on your personal brand.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Imagine how it will perk up readers and elevate your candidacy, if your resume immediately captures their interest because it doesn\u2019t read like everyone else\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>That alone will differentiate you as a candidate.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, once people start reading your <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/elevate-your-executive-resume-from-bland-to-brand\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"447\">personal brand<\/a> story \u2013 showcasing how you get things done, what you\u2019re like to work with, and how your leadership style positively impacts your employers \u2013 they connect with you and get a real feel for who you are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What&#8217;s so great about personal branding?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Because personal branding in job search is all about differentiating the unique value you offer your target employers, it stands to reason that branding in your resume will help to make you stand out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Branding is a way to generate chemistry for you as a candidate. It helps people &#8220;see&#8221; the real you and your story better than what usually shows up in a resume.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jazz up your executive resume with various strategies.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Highlight the things you\u2019re passionate about doing at work and how those passions have benefited your employers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don&#8217;t be afraid to show your personality. It does very little to help people assessing you distinguish you from the rest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pare down the info in your resume to only include what&#8217;s relevant to the job and employer. Your company and industry research will help you weed things out and focus on what&#8217;s most important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have lots of relevant information, use only what&#8217;s most important so you can <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/c-level-executive-resume-length-one-two-or-three-pages\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">keep your resume to a reasonable length<\/a>. Any relevant extra tidbits may <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-build-personal-brand-content-for-executive-job-search\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"680\">work well in your cover letter<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Don&#8217;t forget to use numbers.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This kind of specificity offers clarity around just how significant the impact of your actions were.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And visually, numbers stand out among words, so the eye will be drawn to your metrics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Don&#8217;t duplicate your cover letter.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Your cover letter will most likely be read first and it should be a stand-alone document.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-write-the-best-cover-letter-for-executive-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A cover letter&#8217;s purpose<\/a> is to zero in on that specific employer you&#8217;re writing to. It provides you an opportunity to mention specific things about yourself that <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/worried-about-age-discrimination-9-things-on-your-executive-resume-that-show-your-age\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"795\">may not be appropriate for your resume<\/a> or that may only apply to that particular employer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;Your cover letter should work in tandem with your resume, which details your background and accomplishments. You don\u2019t want a cover letter that just reiterates what\u2019s on your CV, and you don\u2019t want a CV that\u2019s so long and broad that you don\u2019t have anything left to describe in your cover letter.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Write in the active voice.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;Be intentional about including action-oriented verbs attached to responsibilities. For example, \u201cleading teams,\u201d \u201cdriving engagement,\u201d and \u201crunning operations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your executive summary is one area to focus on since the rest of your <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/is-the-executive-resume-dead-or-dying\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"93\">resume<\/a> will highlight your work experience, typically in bullets, as well as your cover letter, if you wanted to add some flair in terms of who you are and what you\u2019re looking to do.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Get feedback from others.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;When you\u2019re too close to your own career, it\u2019s possible to overlook some of your best accomplishments or strengths.
