They want to be open to any and all opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why job search targeting is so important<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, most executives start their job search by updating their resume and heading to the job boards. They blast their resume to every job posting that seems like a possibility. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of them <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/use-job-boards-for-research-not-to-find-jobs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">unwisely spend ALL their job search time on job boards<\/a>, neglecting networking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most efficient and effective way to tackle <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/5-common-executive-job-search-dilemmas\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"181\">job search<\/a> is to start by selecting a number of companies or organizations to focus on. That is, employers that you feel will be a mutual good fit, based on your must-have criteria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This keeps you from wasting time pursuing companies and jobs that probably aren&#8217;t right for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to job search and career expert <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebalancecareers.com\/creating-a-target-list-of-companies-2060032\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alison Doyle<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The time you spend upfront investigating companies will benefit you in the long run because you won&#8217;t be spending energy applying to companies that aren&#8217;t a good fit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By applying for jobs at companies where you know you would like to work, you&#8217;ll avoid getting deep into the interview process only to realize the company is a poor fit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another advantage of having a list of target companies is that once you know where you want to work, you can try to network with current or former employees who can potentially <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/networking-to-referral-to-hire-best-way-to-land-executive-job\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">refer you for a position at the company<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Another problem with NOT targeting is that, when you\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/worksheets-personal-branding-and-executive-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">writing content&nbsp;for your executive resume<\/a>, biography, LinkedIn profile, etc., you won\u2019t know who you\u2019re writing for. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You won&#8217;t know which specific strengths, qualities and qualifications to zero in on.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You won&#8217;t know which contributions of yours to past employers will resonate with your future employer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It\u2019s nearly impossible to effectively <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/think-like-an-executive-resume-branding-pro-build-your-personal-brand\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"768\">define and communicate your personal brand<\/a>. Your brand will be unfocused and won\u2019t clearly resonate with anyone.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Being generic, to cover as many bases (or job opportunities) as possible, will probably lead to a very <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/5-things-you-probably-dont-know-about-executive-resumes-and-job-search\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"684\">prolonged job search<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Understand the first rule of marketing.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Job search is a marketing campaign, similar to a company marketing a product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you\u2019re job hunting, you\u2019re essentially a solopreneur . . . a company of one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/want-a-successful-executive-job-search-run-it-like-a-small-business\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">if you want a successful job search, you should run it like a business<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your resume, <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/linkedin-personal-branding-executive-job-search\/\">LinkedIn profile<\/a> and other <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/should-you-use-chatgpt-for-resume-writing-and-job-search\/\">job search<\/a> materials \u2013 and your professional social media activities \u2013 are all personal marketing communications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the main principles of marketing is to know your target audience and understand specific \u201cpain points\u201d of theirs, so that you can position yourself as their problem solver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It may seem counterintuitive, but the more you niche your marketing and job search efforts towards specific employers, the more appealing you\u2019ll be as a candidate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As much as possible, you want to focus your personal marketing materials, and present yourself, as the best hiring choice for specific employers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Here&#8217;s Your Job Search Targeting Game Plan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You can see side-by-side how much a job search campaign is like running a marketing campaign in business:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:100%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>For Business<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>For Job Search<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Know your products and\/or services intimately<\/td><td>Know yourself and <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/the-new-10-step-executive-personal-branding-worksheet\/\">define your personal brand<\/a><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Understand your target audience<\/td><td>Target specific employers you want to work for<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Know why your target audience needs your products and\/or services<\/td><td><a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/best-ways-and-places-to-research-your-target-employers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Research your target employers<\/a> for market intelligence, company\/industry insight and to determine what makes you a good fit<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Create marketing communications about your products and\/or services that promote what they will do for your target audience.<\/td><td>Write compelling content (for your resume, LinkedIn profile and other materials) that will resonate with your target employers<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Market your products and\/or services across multiple channels<\/td><td>Communicate your good-fit qualities via <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-much-social-media-is-enough\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"770\">social media and in person<\/a><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Network your way towards decision makers within your target audience<\/td><td>Network purposefully to <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-network-into-the-goldmine-of-hidden-executive-jobs\/\">get to the &#8220;hidden&#8221; job market<\/a> &#8230; those coveted jobs that are never advertised<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Prepare to communicate the good-fit qualities of your products and\/or services face-to-face with your target audience<\/td><td>Master <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/nail-your-virtual-interviews-21-things-you-need-to-know-do-and-master\/\">the job interview<\/a> process<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Track and measure the results of your efforts<\/td><td>Track and measure the results of your efforts<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>But what if you don\u2019t have a target list of employers and don\u2019t know how to start?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a dilemma some of my clients face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Choose employers or organizations that will be a mutual good fit, and then deeply research them to uncover their current pressing needs and determine how you will help them overcome these challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending upon your target industry(s) and other variables, compiling your list of target companies may be a cinch, or a headache.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tips To Pin Down Your List of Target Companies for Executive Job Search<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Narrow your options by location(s) first.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Brainstorm with friends, family and those in your closest professional network. People you can trust, especially if you need to keep your search under cover.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check out Forbes, Fortune and other reputable publishers\u2019 various lists of \u201cbest\u201d companies to work for. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Google \u201cTop 100 companies (or employers)\u201d and \u201cbest companies (or employers)\u201d for your city.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Search Google Maps for relevant terms, such as \u201cstartups\u201d or \u201ctechnology companies\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Try Artificial Intelligence<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>AI can be extremely helpful, and a major time-saver, for building your target company list and then researching those companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;ve written extensively about using AI for resume writing and job search in this article, <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/should-you-use-chatgpt-for-resume-writing-and-job-search\/\">How to Safely Use ChatGPT and Other AI for Your Executive Resume and Job Search<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Popular AI platforms include ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and Copilot, but there are many others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In particular, Crunchbase can be very helpful because it provides in depth information across industries such as company size, funding details, leadership, and recent news, as well as other similar companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You&#8217;ll get the best results with AI using prompts that are specific, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;Create a list of (X number) companies in (city, state) that have hired (role you\u2019re seeking).&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>or<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;What are the top companies located in (city, state) in the (X) industry?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Start with prompts like those then have a conversation with AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ask specific questions and follow up with more probing prompts, and\/or ask for more options based on what you&#8217;ve already asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>But be careful how you use AI.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AI can be helpful in the ways I&#8217;ve noted. That is, helping with compiling a target list and researching each company on the list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But I strongly advise against using it to entirely write your resume, LinkedIn profile, or other job search materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It could be risky to feed it any sensitive or personal information about you or past and present employers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So it&#8217;s best to anonymize whatever you input into AI. Don&#8217;t give it anything you wouldn&#8217;t want to land online for all to see. That could happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, AI typically writes in a generic way that won&#8217;t do much to give a feel for your personality and differentiate you from other candidates like you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, it won&#8217;t do a good job with personal branding.
