You couldn\u2019t capture your essence any better than that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I know firsthand that some job seekers have no qualms about \u201cborrowing\u201d content from others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several times over the 25+ years I\u2019ve been <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-build-personal-brand-content-for-executive-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">writing personal brand content for executive job search<\/a>, I\u2019ve come across people who stole content I wrote for a client of mine. It was right there online. Two profiles with a fair amount of duplicate content. Hard to miss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of these culprits have even sought me out to help them improve their <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/yikes-my-linkedin-profile-is-missing\/\">LinkedIn profiles<\/a>. They had tried writing it themselves \u2013 helping themselves to full paragraphs I had written for someone else. They didn\u2019t think they\u2019d done anything wrong. Some thought they were quite clever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Colleagues of mine have told me of similar experiences they\u2019ve had, so this practice is probably fairly prevalent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of us know that plagiarizing is wrong. But that\u2019s just one of the many reasons not to copy another person\u2019s brand content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><span style=\"color:#0d7b14\" class=\"has-inline-color\">7 Reasons Copying Someone Else\u2019s Content Is Bad for Your Personal Brand<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. &nbsp;You may be overlooked because of identity confusion and conflicts.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>That LinkedIn content you \u201cborrowed\u201d may belong to a job seeker who is targeting the same companies you are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What do you suppose happens when the companies\u2019 hiring professionals notice the same content for two candidates (or more, if others have also stolen the content) they\u2019re considering? They\u2019ll have no way of knowing who originated the content, so they\u2019ll probably pass you both by. Everybody loses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. &nbsp;Copyright infringement is a big deal.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The United States government says stealing content is illegal, and makes violating copyright law a serious, punishable offense, with hefty fines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ANY content you\u2019ve found online, even if it doesn\u2019t carry a \u201c\u00a9 Copyright\u201d claim, is automatically copyrighted to the author and protected by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.copyright.gov\/legislation\/dmca.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA)<\/a>, which is international in scope and consistent with similar laws across the globe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. &nbsp;LinkedIn may close your account.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>LinkedIn frowns upon copyright violations, too. Members who violate the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/legal\/copyright-policy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LinkedIn Copyright Policy<\/a> are subject to account termination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the very least, LinkedIn may disable access to or remove content, at their discretion. Conversely, if you see that someone has stolen content from your profile, LinkedIn has procedures in place for you to make a formal complaint, and they\u2019ll deal with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. &nbsp;You\u2019ve lost the differentiating benefits of authentic personal branding.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Branding is all about <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/the-secret-of-personal-branding-be-authentic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">differentiating yourself and being authentic<\/a>. It\u2019s not about how you\u2019re the same as the others competing for the jobs you want. In a highly competitive job market, you need to stand out . . . not get lost in a sea of sameness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your own approach to solving the problems that led to your achievements provide evidence to support your brand promise. Don\u2019t settle for generic achievement statements that sound good, but aren\u2019t really authentic for you. Include specific examples of your contributions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Help people assessing you understand what specifically elevates your skill-sets and qualifications above the rest, and makes you the best-fit candidate for your target companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And a copycat <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/what-personal-branding-is-not\/\">personal brand<\/a> takes the \u201cpersonal\u201d out of the equation. The content you\u2019re stealing may sound like you, but it\u2019s really not your unique brand story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, focus on writing robust content that will generate chemistry for the kind of person you are, how you make things happen for employers, and what makes you a good fit for your target employers\u2019 corporate culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5. &nbsp;It may not resonate with your specific target employers.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The well-written content on someone else\u2019s profile that\u2019s tantalizing you may not do the job your Linked profile is meant to do \u2013 aligning what you have to offer with the current needs of your target employers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You MUST <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/best-ways-and-places-to-research-your-target-employers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">research those companies<\/a> to determine what it is about you that will be important to them, and pump your profile with your specific expertise, contributions, and value-add in those specific areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>6. &nbsp;Think about your reputation and integrity.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If people at your target companies find out, you could be jeopardizing your chances to land the job(s) you want. What does stealing say about your integrity? What kind of employee are you likely to be if you have no qualms about scraping copyrighted content? Even if you never heard of the DMCA, you should know that stealing is wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This can also jeopardize your current job. If someone at your company notices the stolen content, you may be deemed a less-than-desirable employee, and get pink-slipped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>7. &nbsp;Poor SEO (Search Engine Optimization) reduces impact and authority.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>LinkedIn, Google, and other search engines will view your profile as \u201cduplicate content\u201d and may place it further down in search results, below the \u201cearlier\u201d version created by the originator. <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-search-engine-optimization-seo-impacts-executive-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Search engines<\/a> penalize duplicate content!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Bottom Line:<\/strong> <strong>Remember these things about your personal brand<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019re an original. Reflect that in the brand-supporting content you create for your LinkedIn profile. Authentic branding doesn\u2019t come from using someone else\u2019s brand messaging. It comes from digging deep and differentiating yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you\u2019re pulling together the content for <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-get-your-personal-brand-into-your-linkedin-profile\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"153\">your LinkedIn profile<\/a>, resume, biography and other career materials, don\u2019t base your writing on the content of others. Start from scratch and <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/the-new-10-step-executive-personal-branding-worksheet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">define your own authentic personal brand<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it\u2019s okay (in fact, it\u2019s good practice) to look at the profiles of your competitors for ideas and help with the right keywords.
