They use social networking. You need to, too.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/checklist-optimize-linkedin-executive-job-search\/\">LinkedIn<\/a> is the most important place to establish a strong presence and actively network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But don\u2019t stop there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3 Ways to Make Social Networking Count<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In a Harvard Business Review article, Dorie Clark suggested these <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2016\/10\/networking-with-people-you-cant-meet-in-person\">3 powerful ways to connect online<\/a>, beyond LinkedIn. I\u2019ve adjusted these to focus specifically on job search networking:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Master a proactive outreach.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t waste too much time on aimless social media blasts. Narrow your efforts to people who work at the companies or organizations you\u2019re targeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cPick 5-10 people. Follow them on social media, and take note of which channels they seem to use most regularly. Look for opportunities to engage with that person, retweeting [or sharing] their posts with your own audience, answering a question they may ask, or sharing a thoughtful response to one of their updates.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>This approach builds momentum over time. The idea is to slowly and gently become known to these people, and stay top-of-mind with them, by engaging in small ways every few weeks. Ultimately, you\u2019ll hope to win an in-person meet with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One LinkedIn way to accomplish this is by <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/smart-personal-branding-posting-linkedin-updates-vs-updating-your-linkedin-profile\/\">posting or sharing updates<\/a> regularly and tagging the people you&#8217;re targeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. If they\u2019ve set up a <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/google-alerts-executive-job-search\/\">Google Alert<\/a> for their name, they\u2019re likely to come across it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Here are a few of the many places to build your online brand:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/the-value-of-blogging-your-personal-brand-on-linkedin\/\">LinkedIn long-form (or Pulse) publishing platform<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Online publications specific to your industry<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Major online publications like Forbes, Wall Street Journal, NY Times, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/executive-branding-online-write-book-reviews-on-amazon\/\">Book reviews on relevant publications on Amazon<\/a> and other major online booksellers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Articles on medium.com<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A quick way to build online presence: <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/showcase-your-personal-brand-with-linkedin-comments\/\">Comment meaningfully<\/a> on other people&#8217;s relevant articles and posts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Develop a \u201cbookend\u201d strategy to complement in-person networking.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Strive to move the best leads beyond virtual networking to a phone call and\/or in-person meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Virtual <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-network-better\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"173\">networking<\/a> works best when it\u2019s not happening in isolation. Once you\u2019ve created \u201cwarm leads\u201d and have made preliminary contact with faraway contacts, you can solidify your connection by advancing to an in-person meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIf you know you\u2019ll have the opportunity to meet someone at a conference (the organizers often share the speaker or attendee list), you can message them in advance via LinkedIn, or Twitter if they seem to be active there, introducing yourself and suggesting a time to connect at the event.
