{"id":5944,"date":"2025-07-14T07:11:00","date_gmt":"2025-07-14T11:11:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/?p=5944"},"modified":"2025-07-14T07:08:54","modified_gmt":"2025-07-14T11:08:54","slug":"whats-the-best-executive-resume-format-and-length","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/whats-the-best-executive-resume-format-and-length\/","title":{"rendered":"What&#8217;s the Best Executive Resume Format and Length?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/get-primed-to-land-a-great-fit-new-gig\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/checklist-1266989_640-1.png\" alt=\"executive resume\" class=\"wp-image-5945 lazyload\"\/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"442\" src=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/checklist-1266989_640-1.png\" alt=\"executive resume\" class=\"wp-image-5945 lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/checklist-1266989_640-1.png 640w, https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/checklist-1266989_640-1-300x207.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/noscript><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Often when I speak with executives who are in job search, or planning one, the first thing they ask me is how their executive resume stacks up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of them have never been in a job search or haven&#8217;t faced one for a number of years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They&#8217;ve either slid easily from one company to the next, without ever having to look, or have progressed up the ladder within one or more good companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Often these lucky job seekers haven&#8217;t needed a resume, and have missed the boat on the new resume strategies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They&#8217;re woefully out-of-date on <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/is-your-executive-resume-still-partying-like-its-1999\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">how their resume should look and read<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They also often don&#8217;t understand <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/are-you-executive-job-search-ready\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">best practices for executive job search<\/a>, and that <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-network-into-the-goldmine-of-hidden-executive-jobs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">networking into the so-called &#8220;hidden&#8221; jobs<\/a> is the best way to land a great-fit new gig.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You&#8217;ll note that I barely mention <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/use-job-boards-for-research-not-to-find-jobs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">job boards<\/a> here. For <a data-wpil-monitor-id=\"825\" href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/who-is-an-executive\/\">executives, especially at the c-suite and other top levels<\/a>, this method alone doesn&#8217;t work so well and takes up too much time. Your time is better spent in networking your way into companies and circumventing gatekeepers for at least a time, until you become somewhat known.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">First, create 3 versions of your executive resume for various purposes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>1. A nicely formatted, visually appealing MSWord version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. A PDF version so that formatting of the above will set up exactly as you meant it to. On the receiving end, the formatting on MSWord documents may shift. With a PDF, it won&#8217;t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3. A stripped down, barely formatted text or ATS-friendly version to make it through <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/executive-resume-ats-applicant-tracking-systems-need-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Applicant Tracking Systems<\/a>. This can be created as a Word document.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How ATS works<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s what happens when you <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/4-reasons-you-cant-write-your-own-executive-resume\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">send your resume to recruiters and employers<\/a>, and when you respond to job postings:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The recruiter or other actual human being may or may not read it first thing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ultimately, the document is put into a database or ATS, along with thousands of other resumes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The ATS attempts to match candidates to jobs. The database sifts through the resumes and parses their content for the <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/keywords-in-job-search-how-important-are-they\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"826\">relevant keywords<\/a> they\u2019ve fed into it for that particular job.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The only <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/resume-trends-from-the-experts\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"25\">resumes selected are those that are formatted<\/a> in a way that the ATS can \u201cread\u201d. And they have to contain enough of those relevant keywords.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Resumes are not selected if they are incorrectly formatted, don\u2019t contain enough of the right keywords, or don\u2019t fit the bill in some other way.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Some career professionals advise creating just one MS Word resume version that covers both bases \u2013 formatted for visual appeal but will also get the resume through ATS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But there are more than 200 kinds of ATS out there. Some accept various enhancements and some don&#8217;t. You won&#8217;t know which version the company is using and how much formatting enhancement will be okay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s safer to have a designated ATS resume version as I described above for the times you know your resume is going into an ATS. And reserve the nicely formatted Word version for human eyeballs only.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For specifics on building the content for your executive resume, read my post, <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-build-personal-brand-content-for-executive-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">How to Build Personal Brand Content for Executive Job Search<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And get my set of <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/worksheets-personal-branding-and-executive-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">4 proprietary worksheets<\/a> to help you identify the information to include in your resume, and write your resume in a way that will resonate with your target employers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Which executive resume format(s) to send to which people<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Your <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/executive-job-searc-the-old-way-networking-still-works-best\/\">executive job search campaign will include networking<\/a> and communicating with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/build-winning-relationships-with-executive-recruiters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Executive recruiters<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hiring professionals (or Human Resources) at your target companies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Various other people who work at your target companies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your existing network<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re responding to job postings on company websites or job boards, follow their directions on which format(s) or documents to include.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re circumventing job boards and company website postings and reaching out directly to recruiters and other hiring professionals, your first communication will probably include your resume, with a brief <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-write-the-best-cover-letter-for-executive-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cover letter\/email<\/a> expressing your interest.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Send these people all three resume versions. You may not know whether they will review your resume on their desktop\/laptop or phone, and whether they may pass it on to an Applicant Tracking System, so play it safe and cover all the bases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tap employees at various professional levels&nbsp;at your target companies and others in your network for <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/guide-to-informational-interviews-for-executive-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">informational interviews<\/a>, to help you with company research and market intelligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your initial short emails to this second group of people are just &#8220;feelers&#8221;. You&#8217;re not presenting yourself as a candidate yet, because you don&#8217;t know at this time where and how you might fit into those companies, so don&#8217;t <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/what-not-to-put-in-your-c-level-executive-resume\/\">include your resume<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you get their feedback and determine the situation, customize your <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/does-your-executive-resume-position-you-as-the-best-hiring-choice\/\">resume to position<\/a> yourself as a good fit, and send a more detailed email with your targeted, nicely formatted Word resume.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultimately, your networking efforts should focus on penetrating the \u201chidden\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-do-i-find-a-job-in-the-hidden-job-market\/\">job market<\/a>. That is, coveted jobs that are never advertised anywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What about the length of your executive resume?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Don&#8217;t get bogged down by confusing dictates you may have read about resume length, like \u201c<em>your resume must <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/c-level-executive-resume-length-one-two-or-three-pages\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">never be more than 2 pages<\/a><\/em>\u201d or, heaven forbid, &#8220;<em>keep your resume to 1 page<\/em>&#8220;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Focus instead on detailing what makes you a good fit for <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/7-tips-to-build-your-executive-job-search-target-companies-list\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">your target employers<\/a>, based on the <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/best-ways-and-places-to-research-your-target-employers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">research you\u2019ve done<\/a> to determine their current pressing needs, and how you\u2019re uniquely qualified to help them problem-solve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Resume length is driven by what information needs to be in it, to successfully market yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A three page resume is fine, especially for c-suite and senior-level executives . . . if you\u2019ve ruthlessly edited down to the essentials, and included only the things that will matter to your target companies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other than the first exception noted below, don&#8217;t be tempted to use a 4 page resume. Keep it to no more than 3 pages. There are plenty of ways to <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/my-executive-resume-is-too-long-what-to-do\/\">pare down a too long resume<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Include in your resume a link to your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/megguiseppi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LinkedIn profile<\/a> \u2013 which should include the whole story \u2013 and direct people to find more details there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And let me stress that your <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/does-linkedin-make-the-executive-resume-obsolete\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"500\">LinkedIn profile<\/a> should have a lot more information about you in it than your 2 to 3 page resume will allow. If you have a skimpy, anemic LinkedIn profile, get to work on pumping it up for people assessing you and <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/linkedin-personal-branding-executive-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">optimizing it for LinkedIn search<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>There are some exceptions about executive resume length<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>1. Executive recruiters have been known to ask for a lengthy <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/my-executive-resume-is-too-long-what-to-do\/\">resume<\/a> (sometimes 5 or more pages) including ALL your career history in depth. Provide them whatever they require. They know what their client companies want. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. An ATS-friendly resume has no length restrictions. In fact, longer is probably better.
