Even career professionals can find them challenging to write. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Resumes are just one aspect of executive job search my clients have questions about. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the years, I&#8217;ve kept track of some of their questions about the challenges they face. These are the\u00a0major road blocks and\/or strategies they&#8217;ve told me they need help understanding, across various topics:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>LinkedIn <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Executive Job Interviews<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Personal Branding<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Online Reputation Management<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Executive Job Search, in general<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>You&#8217;ll find links below to the articles I wrote about their FAQS on these topics.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Executive Resume FAQs<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are the executive resume FAQs job seekers ask me the most:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. My executive resume stinks. How do I get it to represent who I really am and what I have to offer?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Start by making your <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/is-your-executive-resume-an-interesting-read\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">executive resume an interesting read<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>How do you do that?<\/em> With targeting and <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/ignore-the-hype-what-authentic-personal-branding-is-and-is-not\/\">personal branding<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Targeting will help you zero in on specific areas where you can add value for specific employers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why do you need to <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/best-ways-and-places-to-research-your-target-employers\/\">target specific employers<\/a>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because if you don&#8217;t, your resume is likely to be generic to cover as many bases as possible. A generic resume isn&#8217;t likely to hit home with employers because it won&#8217;t help them see you in the job, making a positive impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Personal branding will help you differentiate your unique combination of skill sets, qualifications and personal attributes that make you a good fit for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/what-is-personal-branding-do-i-need-a-personal-brand-for-job-search\/\">personal branding<\/a> helps you generate chemistry for who you are and what kind of employee you&#8217;ll be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Doing the work to define your personal brand typically includes developing career success stories around your accomplishments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Storytelling is one of the best ways to elevate your resume from generic, dry resume-speak to vibrant <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/executive-job-search-research-your-target-employers\/\">personal marketing that resonates with your target employers<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t be afraid to <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/the-secret-of-personal-branding-be-authentic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tell people about your personality<\/a> \u2013 how you work with and lead people, how you make things happen for a company, what you\u2019re known for by peers and others at work, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your executive resume is still partying like it\u2019s 1999, you need to <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/think-like-an-executive-resume-branding-pro-10-resume-dos-and-donts\/\">think&nbsp;like a resume branding pro, with 10 Do\u2019s and Don\u2019ts<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And always <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/do-grammar-and-spelling-errors-really-matter-in-executive-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">be mindful that grammar and spelling errors<\/a> really matter in your resume, biography, cover letters, LinkedIn profile, and any other personal marketing content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. How many pages should my resume be? Is 3 pages too many?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For the 25+ years I\u2019ve been <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-write-an-irresistible-c-level-executive-resume-in-10-steps\/\">writing executive resumes<\/a>, I rarely held fast to the rule that they should be no longer than 2 pages. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I feel that 3 pages, when necessary, are perfectly fine . . . especially for c-suite and senior-level <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/who-is-an-executive\/\">executives<\/a>. It all depends on what information truly needs to be included, to best position my client as a good-fit candidate for their target employers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s the deal:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/c-level-executive-resume-length-one-two-or-three-pages\/\">Resume length<\/a> is not so much the issue. Including the right content (with nothing arbitrary) is the key.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, around half of the first page should be a snapshot carrying the most important points. This will draw the reader in and encourage them to read the whole document, no matter how long, while concisely showcasing the candidate&#8217;s value, if the reader only has time for a quick scan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This pertains to the nicely <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/resume-trends-from-the-experts\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"28\">formatted version of your resume<\/a>, designed for human eyeballs as you network your way into jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These days, in the age of <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/executive-resume-ats-applicant-tracking-systems-need-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Applicant Tracking Systems<\/a> (ATS), job seekers need another version of their resume to make it through recruiters\u2019 and HR departments\u2019 databases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An ATS-friendly resume is a barely formatted text version, that needs to contain enough of the right <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/keywords-in-job-search-how-important-are-they\/\">keywords searched<\/a> to call up the resume for a particular job. For this version, length doesn\u2019t apply. In fact, longer is better. How do I deal with the employment gaps in my career history?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With a long career history, many c-suite and senior-level executive job seekers may have <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-deal-with-employment-gaps-in-your-resume-and-linkedin-profile\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">employment gaps<\/a> for various reasons. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your gaps happened during the pandemic years, they may not be a factor. Many hiring professionals understand and forgive such gaps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even so, your lapses in employment may cause problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But there are ways to deal with these gaps in your resume and LinkedIn profile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To downplay them, you can use years only for employment length, not months. This is standard practice and can cover up fairly long gaps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Better still, plan ahead to avoid future employment gaps with preemptive tactics like these:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Go back to school, either online or in-person, and take courses or earn certifications to upgrade relevant skills.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Secure temp work.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Find consulting gigs or interim work, or set up a consulting firm and take on relevant assignments.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Volunteer at charities, schools, hospitals, civic groups, etc. Even though you may not be paid, this kind of work definitely counts as professional experience. <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/the-power-of-volunteering-for-your-personal-brand-and-executive-job-search\/\">Volunteering is especially powerful<\/a> when the work you do for the organization aligns with the expertise you&#8217;re offering your future employer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Should I have a biography to supplement my resume? How do I use a biography?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>An executive brand biography is a storytelling tool that breathes life into an otherwise flat rehash of <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/what-not-to-put-in-your-c-level-executive-resume\/\">your resume<\/a>. For <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/todays-executive-job-search-toolkit\/\">job search and career management<\/a>, a bio affords the opportunity to reinforce your brand through storytelling, in a way that\u2019s more difficult to accomplish in a resume.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>What a biography does better than a resume:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Showcase your leadership and management acumen through softer skills and \u201cgood fit\u201d attributes, and link them to your value proposition.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Personalize your Challenge &#8211; Actions &#8211; Results (C-A-Rs) stories and use them to reinforce your brand attributes and key strengths.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Generate chemistry around how you use your key personal attributes, passions, strengths, and motivated skills to benefit employers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Help employers connect with you and envision you on the job, having a positive impact.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When I create <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/megguiseppi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LinkedIn profiles<\/a> for my clients, I generate chemistry and showcase personality by using biography-type content with storytelling for the About section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Read more about biographies in my post <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/why-is-it-so-hard-to-write-my-own-c-level-career-brand-biography\/\">Why Is It So Hard to Write Your Own Executive Biography?<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Do I really need a cover letter with my resume?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In a word, \u201c<em><strong>YES!<\/strong><\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some online job postings will require you to include a cover letter, but you&#8217;ll also need them for networking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As you <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-network-into-the-goldmine-of-hidden-executive-jobs\/\">network your way into &#8220;hidden&#8221; jobs<\/a> at your target companies, you\u2019ll be emailing your resume to select people.
