I\u2019m on the job boards almost every day and send my resume to every job posting possible, but it\u2019s been months, and very little is happening. What am I doing wrong?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/blackboard-398453_640.jpg\" alt=\"job boards alone don't work so well\" class=\"wp-image-8327 lazyload\" style=\"width:840px;height:auto\"\/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"485\" src=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/blackboard-398453_640.jpg\" alt=\"job boards alone don't work so well\" class=\"wp-image-8327 lazyload\" style=\"width:840px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/blackboard-398453_640.jpg 640w, https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/blackboard-398453_640-150x114.jpg 150w, https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/blackboard-398453_640-300x227.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Many <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/7-things-successful-executive-job-seekers-know\/\">executive job<\/a> seekers believe that all executive jobs are on the job boards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So they spend the vast majority of their time perusing the listings and sending out their <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/personal-branding-resume-or-job-search-targeting-which-comes-first\/\">resumes to any job that even remotely fits<\/a> the bill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They&#8217;re spending many hours each week doing this, so they feel they&#8217;re really <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/deftly-organize-and-track-your-executive-job-search\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"55\">working hard at job search<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sure, they&#8217;re <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/executive-job-search-preparation-is-hard-work-accept-it\/\">working hard<\/a>, but that hard work is often misdirected. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/toxic-executive-job-search-beliefs-hit-job-boards-hard\/\">Job boards<\/a> aren\u2019t very good at helping people land good-fit jobs for several reasons, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Jobs posted may not be legitimate openings.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Job descriptions may not truly represent the job.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Jobs may have already been filled, but still linger on job boards.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You may not be able to delete your <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/what-not-to-put-in-your-c-level-executive-resume\/\">resume<\/a> from their database once you land a job, making you forever appear as an active job-hunter and jeopardizing future jobs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>And then, there&#8217;s the nearly inevitable black hole waiting to consume your resume. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you send your resume in response to job listings, or to human resources at a particular company, here&#8217;s what happens. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It lands in a database with an <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/executive-resume-ats-applicant-tracking-systems-need-know\/\">Applicant Tr<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/executive-resume-ats-applicant-tracking-systems-need-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/executive-resume-ats-applicant-tracking-systems-need-know\/\">cking System<\/a> (ATS) that matches jobs to candidates based on specific keywords they search your resume for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some recruiters say that they review each resume as it comes in. But if they can&#8217;t match a resume to any current jobs they&#8217;re trying to fill, back into the database go those resumes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then those resumes sit there until they get called up in response to specific job openings. But that only happens when resumes contain enough of the keywords they\u2019ve deemed important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your resume isn\u2019t re-tooled \u2013 <em>each time you apply for a job online<\/em> \u2013 to contain the right keywords for each particular job posting, you could easily not make the cut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This severely limits the chances your resume will be seen, and that you\u2019ll land a job through all that time spent on job boards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Another reason job boards don&#8217;t work well is that many executive jobs \u2013 especially top-level executive jobs \u2013 come through proactive networking into the <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-network-into-executive-job\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">goldmine of &#8220;hidden&#8221; jobs<\/a>.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The hidden job openings NEVER land on job boards. They&#8217;re not posted anywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So you can see, it\u2019s best to avoid spending hours responding to job postings on the various job boards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, put together a solid list of companies or organizations to target, and network your way into them, and to <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/networking-to-referral-to-hire-best-way-to-land-executive-job\/\">employee referrals<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But don\u2019t give up entirely on job boards. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They can be very helpful for <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/use-job-boards-for-research-not-to-find-jobs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">company and industry research<\/a>. Find job descriptions that look like a mutual good fit in terms of qualifications \u2013 whether or not the location or the actual company itself is a good fit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. I know I need to target specific companies. How do I find the right ones?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/targeting.png\" alt=\"target specific employers\" class=\"wp-image-14897 lazyload\" style=\"width:840px;height:auto\"\/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/targeting.png\" alt=\"target specific employers\" class=\"wp-image-14897 lazyload\" style=\"width:840px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/targeting.png 640w, https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/targeting-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/targeting-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/targeting-100x100.png 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a dilemma some of my clients face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your game plan \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/best-ways-and-places-to-research-your-target-employers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Target&nbsp;employers or organizations<\/a> that will be a mutual good fit, and then deeply research them to uncover their current pressing needs and determine how you will help them overcome specific challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Part of your targeting and research work should include <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/guide-to-informational-interviews-for-executive-job-search\/\">informational interviews<\/a>, which are not job interviews and don&#8217;t include a job &#8220;ask&#8221;. I\u2019ve never been a good networker.
