You Didn\u2019t Lay the Groundwork with Targeting and Research<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Without knowing <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/7-tips-to-build-your-executive-job-search-target-companies-list\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">which employers you\u2019re targeting<\/a>, how will you know how to determine and position the value you offer?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Which of your strengths and areas of expertise will be important to stress?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Narrow your search as much as possible to say, 10-20 or so companies or organizations that will be a mutual good fit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/executive-job-search-research-your-target-employers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">research<\/a> each one to uncover their current pressing needs that you will be able to help them with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the kind of information you\u2019ll need to communicate verbally, digitally and on paper \u2013 <em>in your LinkedIn profile, resume, biography, etc.<\/em> \u2013 as you network your way into the \u201chidden\u201d job market, where most <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/10-best-ways-to-get-more-executive-job-interviews\/\">executive jobs<\/a> reside. These are the jobs that are never advertised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Targeting helps you zero in on who you need to connect with \u2013 mainly hiring decision makers and people who work at your target companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Researching helps you uncover what things the companies need your help with. And research helps you find the all-important relevant keywords and phrases you\u2019ll use in your <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-search-engine-optimization-seo-impacts-executive-job-search\/\">job search content to boost your personal SEO<\/a> (Search Engine Optimization), making you more findable online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. You\u2019re Not Communicating Your Unique Value . . . that is, Your Personal Brand<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Executive recruiters and hiring professionals assessing candidates want to get a feel for their personality \u2013 and how they work, how they lead, etc. \u2013 <em>BEFORE funneling them into the interview\/hiring process.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You need to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Differentiate the unique value you offer specific target employers, over your competitors.<\/li><li>Highlight how your personal attributes (or soft skills) impact your driving strengths and areas of expertise (or hard skills) to benefit potential employers.<\/li><li>Be able to clearly and succinctly communicate what makes you the best hiring choice.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/the-secret-of-personal-branding-be-authentic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Generate chemistry in your LinkedIn profile, resume and other career documents<\/a>, AND when you verbalize your good-fit qualities when networking and in job interviews.<\/li><li>Write <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-build-personal-brand-content-for-executive-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">brand-reinforcing content<\/a> that is an interesting and compelling read for people tasked with reading mind-numbing same-old LinkedIn profiles and resumes.<\/li><li>Make it as quick and easy as possible for people assessing you to get to the meat of your unique value proposition. Be specific with examples and metrics.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Defining your <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/worksheets-personal-branding-and-executive-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">authentic personal brand<\/a> will help you do all these things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Your Target Niche is Too Narrow<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As noted above, I normally advise <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/9-things-to-do-right-now-to-get-your-executive-job-search-on-track\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"552\">executives to narrow their search<\/a> as much as possible, so that they can clearly communicate their value to specific employers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, some job seekers take this too far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For instance, don\u2019t set your sights solely on the CFO role in just one specific company . . .&nbsp;unless you have plenty of time to wait, or an inside track, or knowledge of the current CFO\u2019s imminent departure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your target audience needs to be wider than that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Have a more expansive Plan B . . . or even Plans C and D, in terms of targeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. You\u2019re Sabotaging Your Efforts By Spending Too Much Time on Job Boards<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s been estimated by many career experts that something like 80% of $200K+ jobs are not posted anywhere. They come through networking. Yet most <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-network-into-executive-job\/\">executive job<\/a> seekers spend 80% of their time on job boards, minimizing their networking time to next to nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It may feel like you\u2019re working hard, by responding to hundreds of job postings. But really, you\u2019re mostly spinning your wheels and wasting time on a method that yields dismal results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shouldn\u2019t you spend the vast majority of your <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/deftly-organize-and-track-your-executive-job-search\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"58\">job search<\/a> time where it will have the best impact?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What\u2019s wrong with job boards?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the main problems is Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) \u2013 the dreaded resume black hole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ATS were developed to deal with the overwhelming number of resumes <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-get-executive-recruiters-attention-with-the-right-email-messages\/\">executive recruiters<\/a> and employers receive for openings posted on job boards and company websites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many job seekers have aggravated this situation because, even though they may be unqualified for a job posting, they\u2019ll send out their resume to any and all job listings that are even remotely a fit for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How do Applicant Tracking Systems work?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s what happens when you respond to a job listing online, or send your resume to a gatekeeper \u2013 an executive recruiter or human resources department:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The document is put into a database or ATS, along with thousands of other resumes, for various kinds of jobs they\u2019re trying to fill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To call up good-fit candidates, the database parses the content for relevant keywords pertaining to a particular job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/the-worlds-best-executive-resume-is-not-enough\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"694\">Resumes with enough of the right keywords<\/a>, according to particular criteria, are chosen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/whats-the-best-executive-resume-format-and-length\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"823\">Resumes that are incorrectly formatted<\/a>, don\u2019t contain enough relevant keywords, or don\u2019t fit the bill in some other way aren\u2019t called up, at least for that particular job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I think it would be safe to say that most job seekers don&#8217;t know how to navigate ATS successfully. The job descriptions you find there are very helpful for your <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/use-job-boards-for-research-not-to-find-jobs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">industry and company research<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5. You Have Little To No Social Proof To Back Up Your Personal Brand Claims<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-find-executive-recruiters-specializing-in-your-niche\/\">Executive recruiters<\/a> and other hiring professionals have found that some job seekers bend the truth in their resumes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They\u2019ve also found that the same job seekers are much less likely to lie about their accomplishments in their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/megguiseppi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LinkedIn profiles<\/a> . . . and any other content they put online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So they assess and judge each candidate by what they find when they <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/social-proof-where-online-presence-meets-personal-branding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Google \u201ctheir name\u201d<\/a>, and find them on LinkedIn and elsewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It stands to reason that the more content hiring professionals <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/online-reputation-management-faqs-for-executive-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">find online about candidates<\/a> \u2013 <em>that backs up claims they\u2019ve made in their digital documents<\/em> \u2013 the more attractive those candidates are to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They also want to be reassured that you are savvy with social media and the new world of work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re not on LinkedIn, using it proactively \u2013 <em>to connect, network, build your personal brand, provide social proof, demonstrate your subject matter expertise<\/em> \u2013 you will appear to be out of touch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You need to keep busy on LinkedIn, just to keep pace with your job-hunting competitors who know how to use LinkedIn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep building your online presence and <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/why-you-need-to-self-google-once-a-week\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">regularly monitor the search results<\/a> these people will find.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>More About Executive Job Search<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/are-you-executive-job-search-ready\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">7 Questions To See If You\u2019re Ready for Executive Job Search<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/7-linkedin-things-you-should-do-but-probably-dont\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">7 LinkedIn Things You Should Do . . .
