It may be clear, and terribly discomforting . . . <em>you&#8217;re facing age discrimination.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All of a sudden, <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/nail-your-virtual-interviews-21-things-you-need-to-know-do-and-master\/\">job interviews<\/a> may be much harder to land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you do get interviews, you may sense a resistant attitude from the interviewers that you never experienced before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/nextavenue\/2017\/03\/01\/the-key-to-career-success-after-50\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Forbes article<\/a>, Kerry Hannon interviewed John Tarnoff, both career coaches, and asked him &#8220;<em>What do you tell people about not being able to get job interviews after 50?<\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>\u201cMy advice is to admit that it\u2019s ageism. Be fantastic. Engage, ask questions, be of service, be a problem-solver, be a part of a solution. Let yourself roll right over the ageism.<\/em><\/p><p><em>You also need to be strategic. Assess your skills, interests and opportunities. Do an analysis of your strengths and weaknesses. Reach out to close friends, family and colleagues to solicit their views and constructive feedback.<\/em><\/p><p><em>Understand that you\u2019re not going to be able to fight this on your own, but through your network. You need to network to find the people who get you. Those people will bring in more people who will get you\u2026that\u2019s how you are going to get results.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How can you keep age discrimination from jeopardizing your career goals?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Accept that ageism will follow you, or precede you, throughout the networking, interviewing and hiring process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But take heart. There are many companies out there that welcome diversity in all forms, including age because, according to legal recruiter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/feed\/update\/urn:li:activity:6898983829949026305\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wendy Schoen<\/a>: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>&#8220;Those companies gain decades of experience across a wide swath of areas in their companies. They gain mentors to new employees, up-and-coming managers, and experts in areas that are hard to find experts. The older workers get to stay involved, stay needed and can do so at a much reduced &#8220;demand&#8221; level and\/or with a flexibility in their daily or weekly schedule and\/or different benefits etc.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>And there are many things you can do to overcome this challenge, and position yourself to land a great-fit gig.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Here&#8217;s your game plan to overcome age discrimination<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Along with relying heavily on networking your way into your target companies, you&#8217;ll need to dispel the concern that you\u2019re out of date with the digital age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As much as possible, keep pace with your younger competitors who are social media savvy, active on various social networks, and have built a strong online presence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Align your <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/linkedin-personal-branding-executive-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LinkedIn profile<\/a> with your resume focus, optimize and fully populate all applicable LinkedIn sections with plenty of relevant keywords to <a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-balance-personal-branding-with-personal-seo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">boost your personal SEO<\/a>, and get busy leveraging LinkedIn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And keep an eye on the quality and number of search results for your name by <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/why-you-need-to-self-google-once-a-week\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">self-Googling about once a week<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More in my post, <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-conquer-ageism-in-executive-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">The 3-Step Strategy To Conquer Age Discrimination in Executive Job Search<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Target companies that value older workers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Focus your efforts on identifying and investigating companies that appreciate the experience and wisdom that comes with age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aarp.org\/work\/job-search\/companies-value-older-workers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AARP<\/a> suggests 7 ways to find these kinds of companies: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Start with their website<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Look for signs that they value diversity in all its forms. You&#8217;ll especially see this in photos on the website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Scout their social media<\/strong> <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Check the profiles of employees (especially on LinkedIn) to see if the company has workers age 50 and over. Are they and the company itself posting information that indicates diversity?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Look around the room<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In interviews, notice whether there is age diversity \ufeffamong the employees you o\ufeffbserve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. Analyze their recruitment efforts<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Review job ads for language that emphasizes diversity as well as \ufefffor references to benefits. And look at where the company is advertising for new employees. \ufeffIs it using platforms \ufeffaimed at diverse workers, including older \ufeffones?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5. Contact your contacts<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Solicit informational interviews with employees at the company. They may be able to give you insight about how welcoming the organization is to older workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>6. Check the employer pledge program<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 1,000 companies have signed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aarp.org\/work\/employer-pledge-companies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AARP Employer Pledge<\/a>, which affirms that they stand with AARP in valuing older workers and believe that people age 50-plus should have a level playing field in hiring and in the workplace. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>7. Use Google, Glassdoor and other review sites<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Look for stories about the company and any history of age discrimination. Search on the name of the company with <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/tips-to-beat-ageism-in-executive-job-search-if-youre-over-50\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"921\">&#8216;ageism&#8217; or &#8216;age discrimination.&#8217;<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do you get back into, and used to, networking again?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. You may need to re-boot your job search strategy.<\/strong> <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Go back to <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/worksheets-personal-branding-and-executive-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">targeting, researching, and defining your personal brand<\/a>. If you haven&#8217;t done this initial deep-focus work, you may be in for a prolonged <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/7-ways-to-stay-sane-in-your-executive-job-search\/\">job search<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Reconnect with your existing network.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Think of all the people you know, across various aspects of your personal and professional lives. Practice \u201cgive to get\u201d networking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Reach out to new people on a regular basis.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Cast a far-reaching net to build out your network (online and off-line) with fresh faces, including <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-get-executive-recruiters-attention-with-the-right-email-messages\/\">executive recruiters<\/a> and people working at your target companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. Create a personal brand communications plan to stay top-of-mind with your network.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Network and stay top-of-mind with people who can help you penetrate the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-network-into-the-goldmine-of-hidden-executive-jobs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"hidden\u201d job market (opens in a new tab)\">hidden\u201d job market<\/a>, where most people land jobs.
