However, you may not know much about LinkedIn hashtags.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe you&#8217;re feeling inundated by those little cross-hatch figures or pound signs. No wonder. Hashtags are everywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It seems that anytime you see any kind of online communication \u2013 on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, etc. \u2013 it\u2019s loaded with them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The History of Hashtags<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Invented by social technology guru Chris Messina, hashtags first landed on Twitter in 2007.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a fascinating article about the history of Twitter hashtags, co-founder of Exist <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/buffer.com\/resources\/a-concise-history-of-twitter-hashtags-and-how-you-should-use-them-properly\" target=\"_blank\">Belle Beth Cooper<\/a> noted that Chris:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong><em>&#8220;wanted to find a way to incorporate hashtags into his current use of Twitter, so that SMS or IM clients could be used to interact with hashtags, and no web-based management would be required to set them up.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Chris intended them to act as meta data for a tweet. That is, something to provide extra information about a tweet, like where you are or what event you\u2019re referring to.&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>LinkedIn is one of the last of the big social media platforms to join the hashtag party. First toying with them in 2013, they brought them back for good in 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Using LinkedIn Hashtags<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Using hashtags on LinkedIn \u2013 and other social media \u2013 is a relatively simple way to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Promote your <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/the-new-10-step-executive-personal-branding-worksheet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">personal brand<\/a> promise<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Draw people to you<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Motivate people to want to connect with you<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Potentially influence people to help you meet your career goals<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In case you\u2019re in the dark about what hashtags are and what they do, I\u2019ll start with a description:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em><strong>Hashtags are used to categorize relevant keywords and phrases. They are a way to label themes or topics in social media messages, to categorize them and make messages with these keywords easier to find and follow online.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, hashtags used with keywords make them show up more easily in search. If you post a message using hashtags, people looking for information about those keywords will be more likely to find your messages. In other words, they&#8217;ll become aware of you and your personal brand, or unique value proposition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>How to create and use hashtags<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Begin keywords and keyword phrases with the symbol \u201c#\u201d \u2013 with no punctuation or spaces between the words, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">#PersonalBranding<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll find the symbol on your keyboard above the number \u201c3&#8243;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When I\u2019m using hashtags on a phrase, I usually capitalize the first letter of each word, so it\u2019s easier for humans to read. Search engines don\u2019t care whether or not you capitalize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/linkedin-updates-a-time-saving-personal-branding-and-networking-tool\/\" target=\"_blank\">post an update<\/a> or publish an article on LinkedIn, add hashtags to tell people what your update or post is about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Search hash-tagged relevant words:<\/strong> <\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>when you&#8217;re gathering competitive intelligence on your target industry, companies, and employees. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>to identify people to connect with on LinkedIn. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>when you want to keep up with trending topics. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll discover posts on LinkedIn containing that hashtag or topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, you can create hashtags around conversations, events or campaigns. After that, you can promote them by frequently using the hashtags within your LinkedIn communications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Don&#8217;t overdo it with hashtags<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Do your network (and potential new members of your network) a favor. Don&#8217;t overdo it by constantly blasting the same information with the same hashtags. Don&#8217;t use frivolous or brand-tarnishing hashtags like #IHateMyJob or #DontBuyProductsFrom [name of company]. Hashtags are not a license to be snarky, or to post unprofessional information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I agree with Chris that it&#8217;s better to insert hashtags at the end of a tweet, or LinkedIn update, to keep things cleaner. He said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong><em>&#8220;Used sparingly, respectfully and in appropriate measure, I think that the value generated from the use of hashtags is substantial enough to warrant their continued use.&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>What words and phrases should you hashtag?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Those that are relevant to your areas of expertise and represent the value you offer your target employers. Typically, they are your hard skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Go back to the research you\u2019ve done on these employers, to identify the skill sets and qualifications that make you a good fit for them. Those words and phrases are likely the best ones to hashtag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Hashtags for a finance executive<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>For instance, if you are a CFO or other Finance executive, some of the relevant keywords to use and hashtag might be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>#FinancialAnalysis<br>#FinancialPlanning<br>#FinancialManagement<br>#FinancialAccounting<br>#FinancialReporting<br>#FinanceOperations<br>#CashFlow<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Hashtags for an IT executive<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Another example, if you are an IT Project Manager, some of the relevant keywords to use and hashtag might be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>#ITProjectManagement<br>#ProjectManagementProfessional<br>#PMP<br>#SoftwareDevelopment<br>#ITInfrastructureProjects<br>#AgileProjectManagement<br>#ITProjectImplementation<br>#ITProjectTeamLead<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019ve already filled in the <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/help-linkedin-skills-endorsements-mess\/\">\u201cSkills &amp; Endorsements\u201d section of your LinkedIn<\/a> profile with a robust list of your top skills (and you should do this), these are the ones you\u2019ll want to hashtag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using hashtags regularly gives you another bonus.
