If you\u2019re actively in a job-hunt, you know that it\u2019s hard and takes a lot of time.<\/p>\n

I suspect that if you knew about ways to make it easier, and save time doing the job search things you need to do, you\u2019d grab on to them.<\/p>\n

When I go through the annual re-certification process for my Social Branding Analyst<\/a> Designation, I invariably pick up at least a few juicy new tidbits on using LinkedIn better.<\/p>\n

This certification is a premier LinkedIn training program for career professionals to stay up-to-date with the latest LinkedIn strategies for job search and career management.<\/p>\n

Three of the tips below were ones that I learned in the re-certification program, rounded out by two that I came across through my own research.<\/p>\n

5 Nifty LinkedIn Hacks That Make Executive Job Hunting Easier<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

1. Save a copy of your LinkedIn profile.<\/strong><\/h3>\n

You should be updating the content of your profile regularly<\/a>, as you add new skills, achievements, contributions, responsibilities, professional roles, certifications, training, etc. At any time, people who may have good-fit job leads for you may be viewing your profile. You\u2019ll want them to see the most up-to-date picture of the value you offer.<\/p>\n

Hopefully you\u2019ll follow my advice, and update your profile content, say, a few times a year<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

So, now you\u2019ve taken the time to put all this work into your profile.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s a shocker. Profiles have been known to disappear without warning.<\/strong> It’s rare, but it does happen. You may have violated LinkedIn’s Terms of Use, prompting them to bump you out, or you may have done nothing wrong, but suddenly your profile is missing<\/a>. Poof!<\/p>\n

What can you do?<\/strong><\/p>\n

If you haven\u2019t saved a copy of the content, you\u2019re out of luck.<\/p>\n

But, if you get into the habit of saving the content each time you make changes, you\u2019ll be safe.<\/p>\n

Lucky for us, LinkedIn makes this very easy to do, right from your profile.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Go to “View profile” in the main menu drop-down under “Me”. To the right of your profile photo<\/a>, look for the 3 little dots. Hover over them for the drop-down and you’ll see “Save to PDF”. Click on that. Simple!<\/p>\n

2. Find alumni on LinkedIn to connect and network with.<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Networking is by far the best way<\/a> to land a new job. It opens you to the goldmine of \u201chidden\u201d jobs<\/a> where something like 80% of executive job opportunities<\/strong> \u2013 especially at the top executive level \u2013 reside.<\/p>\n

Understandably, the more robust your network, the more job leads will likely come your way. Tapping into the pool of people you went to college and high school with<\/strong> is a wise network-building move.<\/p>\n

LinkedIn used to make this a cinch to do. We could easily access alumni from our profile menu.<\/p>\n

Now, with the newest User Interface, that feature is gone. But there is a workaround. You can still get there by using this URL:<\/p>\n

3. Let executive recruiters know on the DL that you’re job-hunting.<\/strong><\/h3>\n

LinkedIn\u2019s Open Candidates feature allows you to share the specifics of your career goals \u2013 types of companies, roles you\u2019re seeking, etc. \u2013 with executive recruiters who may be able to help you meet those goals.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, recruiters tend to favor those who are employed<\/strong>, so this feature will probably be more valuable if you’re employed.<\/p>\n

Although LinkedIn can’t guarantee that recruiters affiliated with your current company won’t see that you’ve signed up for Open Candidates, this feature may be useful to some.<\/p>\n

If you can be wide open about your search, Open Candidates may make sense<\/strong> . . . and may boost your chances of connecting with the right recruiters.<\/p>\n

Only recruiters with paid accounts will be notified, so Open Candidates doesn\u2019t let all recruiters on LinkedIn know that you\u2019re open to recruitment.<\/p>\n

Access Open Candidates by clicking on \u201cJobs\u201d in the menu at the top of your profile. Look for the \u201cUpdate preferences\u201d link.<\/p>\n

4. Determine what compensation to expect in your new job.<\/strong><\/h3>\n

In November 2016, LinkedIn rolled out a new feature, LinkedIn Salary, that allows you to compare your <\/strong>salary against others with similar jobs<\/a>, aiding you in future salary\/compensation negotiations.<\/p>\n

In an article on the LinkedIn Blog<\/a>, Ryan Sandler, LinkedIn’s Senior Product Manager, wrote:<\/p>\n

“With LinkedIn Salary, we\u2019ve tapped into our network of more than 460+ million members to provide deep insights into the compensation landscape. This includes salary, bonus, and equity data for specific job titles, and the different factors that impact pay such as years of experience, industry, company size, location, and education level – all of which becomes critical knowledge as you navigate your career. Also, rest assured that when you enter your salary, it\u2019s immediately encrypted and remains private.”<\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This feature has potential but, since it\u2019s still relatively new, it may be that not enough members have participated to generate results that will be of help to you.<\/p>\n

5. Easily share content from your browser.<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Sharing updates is a relatively quick and easy way to stay top-of-mind with your network which, in job search<\/a>, should include employees at your target companies and recruiters, along with your various professional contacts.<\/p>\n

[Please note that \u201csharing updates\u201d is different than \u201cupdating your profile content\u201d, as noted in #1 above.]<\/em><\/p>\n

You should get into a routine of sharing updates once a week, or at least a few times a month.<\/strong><\/p>\n

If you\u2019re already in the habit of sharing updates, you may be frustrated by this scenario:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

You want to share a blog post or online article of interest that you\u2019ve come across. You have to take the time to copy and paste the article title and URL into the \u201cShare an Update\u201d field (found at the top of your profile\u2019s \u201cHome\u201d page).<\/p>\n

It doesn\u2019t take that long to do, but it is tedious. Wouldn\u2019t it be nice to streamline this process?<\/strong><\/p>\n

You can install the LinkedIn Browser Bookmarklet<\/a> to your bookmarks bar.<\/p>\n

With a click of the bookmarklet, the article you\u2019re reading will automatically be shared as an update on your LinkedIn profile.<\/strong><\/p>\n
