That is, jigging your profile so that it will increase the chances your LinkedIn profile will land higher in search results for relevant keywords and phrases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You accomplish this by identifying your most important relevant keywords, representing your areas of expertise that will be most important to the employers you\u2019re targeting \u2013 and using those keywords in your headline. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>LinkedIn allows you 220 characters and spaces for your headline. That gives you enough room to use several relevant keywords for SEO . . . AND add in some personality, too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In my opinion, since the profile headline is such an important SEO spot (because it lands so high on the web page), most of what you put there should be hard-hitting keywords. It\u2019s doubtful that things like \u201cresults-oriented\u201d or \u201csuccessful professional\u201d will be keywords that anyone will search, when they\u2019re looking for candidates like you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, this is not the place to put things like \u201cactively seeking opportunities in [whatever industry, company or field you\u2019re seeking]\u201d. Move such information to your About section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But DO get your personality in there. The strong keywords in your headline will help draw people to your profile through keyword search. The additional nod to your personal brand will compel people to read more of your profile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Here&#8217;s an example of a strong profile headline:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Chief Data Scientist for the Fortune 500 | Artificial Intelligence, Data Analytics, Product Development, Thought Leadership | My mantra for business survival in the technology sphere: Unlearn. Transform. Reinvent.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>You can see that plenty of keywords are here, plus the candidate&#8217;s compelling personal brand tagline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How do you know which keywords and phrases are your most important ones? Go back to the <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/executive-job-search-research-your-target-employers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">research you\u2019ve done on your target companies<\/a> or organizations, or get going on that research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2.&nbsp; Brand Your Email Signature<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>An often overlooked social branding tactic, savvy job seekers take a few moments to provide a little bit of concise information about themselves in their email signature, along with their contact information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can add enhancements and set your outgoing email message to automatically insert your signature, once you create one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Here\u2019s what you should include in your email signature:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Your name (use whatever name \u2013 full name or nickname \u2013 that you consistently use online and in job search)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Current job title and employer (if you\u2019re employed). If not, include the job title or job function you\u2019re seeking, such as \u201cGlobal Business Operations Leader\u201d or \u201cSenior Turnaround Management Executive\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brief tagline highlighting the unique value you offer<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Email address (use your personal email, not one associated with your current employer, unless you\u2019re self-employed)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Phone (the best one to reach you \u2013 don\u2019t confuse by including more than one)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your personal website name with URL (if you have one and it\u2019s job search-focused)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Social media \u2013 include links to each of your accounts where you&#8217;re active. At the very least,&nbsp;link to your LinkedIn profile, if it contains plenty of brand-reinforcing content.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>So, here&#8217;s how the email signature for the candidate noted in #1 above might look. You&#8217;ll see that I&#8217;ve made use of his same LinkedIn profile headline:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>John Doe<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chief Data Scientist for the Fortune 500 | Artificial Intelligence, Data Analytics, Product Development, Thought Leadership<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My mantra for business survival in the technology sphere: <em>Unlearn. Reinvent.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>johndoe@gmail.com | (555) 422 &#8211; 5321<br><a href=\"https:\/\/ww.linkedin.com\/in\/johndoe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LinkedIn<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/ww.twitter.com\/johndoe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Twitter<\/a> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3.&nbsp; Add a Photo To Your LinkedIn Profile Or Upgrade Your Existing One<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I know that many people hesitate to include a photo because they fear discrimination, based on age, appearance, ethnic background, etc. I understand, and these concerns are certainly valid. But I\u2019d like you to consider the benefits of having a photo in your profile vs. not having one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most executive recruiters and hiring decision makers at the companies you\u2019re targeting will see your LinkedIn profile before they see anything else about you, online or elsewhere. Put yourself in the shoes of these people assessing your candidacy through your LinkedIn profile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first thing they\u2019ll notice when they land on your profile is your photo . . . or lack of one. If you have NO photo, their initial thought will likely be \u201c<em>What is this person trying to hide?<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Branding is all about making an emotional connection. People connect easier and believe content more when it\u2019s accompanied by the author\u2019s photo. They\u2019re more likely to reach out to someone when they can \u201csee\u201d the person. Your photo helps to personalize and humanize your brand-driven content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another issue associated with not having a photo \u2013 your profile may be flagged as a fake, especially if there\u2019s very little content within the profile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And profiles with photos typically get more views. Your photo will go with you everywhere on the site, with any of your activities, not just when people click through to your profile. If you have no photo, people may not click through to your profile, and rule you out as a potential candidate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Choose your <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/does-my-linkedin-profile-really-need-a-photo\/\">LinkedIn photo<\/a> wisely. Select an appealing, inviting photo that strikes the right image and professional tone for your industry, niche, and personality. Executives typically wear suits, but if your leadership style is relaxed, then a more casual, but still professional, look may be right for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Make sure your headshot is a close-up that is crisp, clear and well-composed. No one else but you should be in the photo. Don\u2019t substitute a drawing or cartoon.
