{"id":8223,"date":"2025-06-09T05:31:00","date_gmt":"2025-06-09T09:31:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/?p=8223"},"modified":"2025-06-09T05:29:32","modified_gmt":"2025-06-09T09:29:32","slug":"worried-about-age-discrimination-9-things-on-your-executive-resume-that-show-your-age","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/worried-about-age-discrimination-9-things-on-your-executive-resume-that-show-your-age\/","title":{"rendered":"Worried About Age Discrimination? 9 Things on Your Executive Resume That Show Your Age"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/green-44843_640.png\" alt=\"modern executive resume \" class=\"wp-image-8230 lazyload\"\/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"337\" src=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/green-44843_640.png\" alt=\"modern executive resume \" class=\"wp-image-8230 lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/green-44843_640.png 640w, https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/green-44843_640-150x79.png 150w, https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/green-44843_640-300x158.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Several years ago I wrote the article <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/is-your-executive-resume-still-partying-like-its-1999\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Is Your Executive Resume Still Partying Like It\u2019s 1999?<\/a>, and then updated it more recently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sadly, I&#8217;m still seeing executive resumes that look and read like the ones I was writing 15-20 years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re sticking to a resume with the same look and kind of content you&#8217;ve been using for decades, you&#8217;re probably in trouble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People assessing you through your resume will probably peg you as older right off the bat, and you could experience <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/executive-job-search-success-after-50-how-to-overcome-age-discrimination\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">age discrimination<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s time to <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/are-you-tweaking-your-out-dated-executive-resume-to-death\/\">modernize your executive resume<\/a> for today\u2019s job search.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep in mind that all the information in your resume needs to revolve around what makes you a good fit for the <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/7-tips-to-build-your-executive-job-search-target-companies-list\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">employers you\u2019re targeting<\/a> . . . based on your <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/best-ways-and-places-to-research-your-target-employers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">company and industry research<\/a>. Nothing included should be arbitrary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>But is age really the issue?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Showing your age on your resume, per se, may not be the real problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No matter what you do, you can&#8217;t entirely conceal your age. Recruiters have told me how easy it is for them to uncover a candidate&#8217;s age, despite attempts to cover it up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Age aside, an outdated resume can indicate that you&#8217;re not good at navigating the new world of work . . . that you&#8217;re not savvy with the new ways . . . that you may not be able to keep up with other, younger employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That can knock you out of the running before you&#8217;re ever considered for a <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/guide-to-executive-job-interviews-the-how-tos-whys-and-best-practices\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">job interview<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>9 Things on Your Executive Resume That Show Your Age<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If any of the following <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/what-not-to-put-in-your-c-level-executive-resume\/\">things show up in your resume<\/a> \u2013 or in some cases, if something is lacking \u2013 your age is probably showing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. An ancient email account provider in your contact information<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Are you still using a HotMail, or AOL, or Yahoo email account?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I understand. They\u2019re still working for you, so you figure &#8220;why change?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an article on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.poynter.org\/news\/not-so-hotmail-what-your-vintage-email-address-says-potential-employers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Poynter.org<\/a>, Erik Brynjolfsson, director of the MIT Initiative on the Digital Economy, suggested:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;People have always used various signaling and screening techniques. Ignoring people who use older technology doesn&#8217;t strike me as a particularly effective way to screen people but if someone is truly overwhelmed with applications, perhaps even noisy and often inaccurate signals like that can reduce the information overload a bit.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>It may not matter to people if you\u2019re using a vintage email provider, but then again, it may. Why take the chance?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gmail is an obvious option that will help make you appear up to date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But keep in mind that using <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/executive-brand-gmail-free-email-services\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">free email providers<\/a> (even Gmail) may not be safe for your job search. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s no secret that Google bots read your Gmail messages, and that Google mines and stores an enormous amount of data. Yahoo email has its own history of spam and hacked accounts. Consider that all free email services may be creating huge marketing databases for some future use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s say you\u2019re in the interview process with one (or several) employers, and you\u2019re hashing out salary and other hiring issues via email. Do you want to risk Google having access to that, and other sensitive information?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the years, free email has been notoriously susceptible to hacking and other privacy issues. So I no longer recommend them for job search, or for any other sensitive matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consider getting a private email address with the domain name &#8220;yourname.com&#8221; (or a variation). Purchase the domain name and then you can easily set up an email account to go with it. (No need to set up a website, too.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two more cautions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Don&#8217;t even think about using an email address associated with your current employer. They could be monitoring it and see that you&#8217;re job hunting.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And I hope this goes without saying . . . whatever email provider you use, don\u2019t <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/the-job-search-emails-you-should-send-regularly\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"801\">create an email address<\/a> that includes your year of birth or numbers that represent when you were born.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Street address at the top of your executive resume<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Putting your actual location on your resume is so old-school. Eliminate it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And this becomes a safety issue if you&#8217;re posting your resume online, on job boards. You don&#8217;t want or need the whole world to know where you live.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. No links to social media or other relevant content online<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Using hyperlinks in <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/dont-play-it-too-safe-with-your-executive-resume\/\">your executive resume<\/a> leads readers to more in depth information about you, and helps position you as social media savvy. And, of course, social media can help you identify leads and opportunities, and land a job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some things to link to in your resume:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/5-reasons-your-linkedin-profile-isnt-working\/\">LinkedIn profile<\/a> (with your contact info at the top of your resume), as long as your profile is robust and fully fleshed out. If you don\u2019t have a <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/experts-debate-linkedin-vs-the-executive-resume\/\">LinkedIn profile<\/a>, get busy and build one now.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other social media accounts where you&#8217;re active (also at the top of your resume). If it\u2019s been months since you\u2019ve posted on these accounts, that doesn\u2019t count as \u201cactive\u201d.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Relevant white papers and articles written by you that are published online (either in the initial resume summary or Experience section).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Articles about you or honors\/awards you\u2019ve won that are published online (either in the initial resume summary or Experience section).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Old style formatting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Wide left margin<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A standard resume used to include about a 2-inch indent at the left for the Experience section and most of what followed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Often, to allow for all that white space in the margin, the content was very densely packed and hard to read.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With many <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/is-your-executive-resume-an-interesting-read\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"674\">resumes being read<\/a> on phones or other small screens, ease-of-reading is a big issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Extending the margins to a normal 1 inch or so all the way around should allow for more white space within the entire content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Double spaces between sentences<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to Marc Miller of <a href=\"https:\/\/careerpivot.com\/2014\/resume-say-age\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Career Pivot<\/a> for explaining why this is a mistake:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;Putting two spaces after a period is obsolete. It is how most of us were taught to type on a typewriter. Therefore, most of us who do this (I have taught myself to stop putting two spaces after a period and it was hard) are over 50 years of age. Over the years, I have heard that this has been used as a method of screening out older candidates.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Get more executive resume formatting tips in my post, <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/whats-the-best-executive-resume-format-and-length\/\">What\u2019s the Best Executive Resume Format and Length?<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. No personal branding or &#8220;personality&#8221; in the content<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/worksheets-personal-branding-and-executive-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Personal branding is no longer optional<\/a> in today\u2019s executive resume.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your brand is a combination of all the things that set you apart from people like you. These are the attributes you\u2019re known for . . . the things people rely on you for . . . the things you tap into every day, as you navigate your work day and personal life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Likewise, a <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/think-like-an-executive-resume-branding-pro-build-your-personal-brand\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">brand-reinforcing, interview-generating resume<\/a> is all about differentiating your value to the employers you\u2019re targeting over everyone else competing for the same kinds of jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Branding helps you communicate what makes you the best <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/does-your-executive-resume-position-you-as-the-best-hiring-choice\/\">hiring choice<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/what-is-personal-branding-do-i-need-a-personal-brand-for-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Branding helps you generate chemistry<\/a> and convey, at least somewhat, your personality and what you&#8217;re like to work with. This is important to employers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the best ways to express your <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/4-reasons-you-cant-write-your-own-executive-resume\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"285\">personal brand in your resume<\/a> is through storytelling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Use the C-A-Rs (Challenge \u2013 Actions \u2013 Results) strategy to showcase a few significant contributions you\u2019ve made to past employers by describing in depth:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Challenge(s) you faced<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What Actions you took<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What Results came from your efforts, that benefitted the company<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Objective statement at the top of your executive resume<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A designated \u201cObjective\u201d section is so yesterday and, because it sits at the top of your resume, sets you up right off the bat as outdated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, avoid including anything in the Summary section like &#8220;<em>seeking a growth position that will utilize my expertise in XYZ<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Employers don&#8217;t care so much what you want. They want to know how you&#8217;ll add value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve been writing resumes professionally for about 25 years. I never, in all that time, included an objective statement in a resume. That\u2019s how old-fashioned that is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. Generic, resume-speak and age-identifying information in the summary section<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If your resume starts with a description that is actually just a string of relevant keywords lumped together, like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Senior Global Technology and <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/who-is-an-executive\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"800\">IT Management Executive<\/a> with expertise in Sales, Marketing &amp; Business Development; Go-To-Market Strategy; Channel Programs; Strategic Accounts; Relationship Management<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Or, if you rely on <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/10-brand-diluting-phrases-that-can-ruin-your-executive-resume\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">anemic resume clich\u00e9s<\/a> like \u201c<em>results-oriented<\/em>\u201d or \u201c<em>visionary leader<\/em>\u201d . . .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019re not differentiating yourself from other candidates like you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The top half or so of your resume is prime real estate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/executive-resume-brand-differentiate-your-roi-value-above-the-fold\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8220;above the fold&#8221; section<\/a> should stand on its own to support your candidacy, because many people will spend only about 10 seconds reviewing your resume, and may read no further than the summary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/25-tips-to-write-an-executive-resume-for-todays-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Capture their attention and compel them to want to read the rest of the document<\/a> by creating a dazzling summary section that includes some or all of these things:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Add a quote. Insert a short compelling quote from someone you\u2019ve worked with about you and the value you offer. Or include a quote of your own \u2013 something you\u2019re known for saying.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Add 3-5 bullet points using <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-c-a-r-storytelling-gives-executive-resume-branding-zing\/\">storytelling<\/a> to highlight hard-hitting achievements and\/or metrics, focused around your top relevant keywords and phrases, with a brief description of how you achieved these things.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Create visual appeal with a graphic box or two to draw attention to important points. (It&#8217;s best NOT to use graphics or much in the way of enhancements in the resume version that will go through <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/executive-resume-ats-applicant-tracking-systems-need-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Applicant Tracking Systems<\/a>. The content may not be accessible to the ATS.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Also very important for the summary section \u2013 don\u2019t indicate your age with statements like \u201c<em>25+ years\u2019 experience at [type of work or area of expertise]<\/em>&#8220;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8. Years you earned your earlier degrees<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Unless you\u2019ve earned an advanced degree within the past 5 years or so, leave off the dates in the education section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For years, career professionals have been using this practice to avoid a glaring red flag for age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">9. Outdated, irrelevant certifications and training<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Are you still listing obsolete certifications you earned more than 20 years ago? How do you suppose that will look to people assessing you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember, if it doesn\u2019t support your good-fit candidacy for the employers you\u2019re targeting, get rid of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">One caveat with my suggestions above<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>No matter how well you\u2019re able to hide your age in your resume, a quick <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/why-you-need-to-self-google-once-a-week\/\">Google search of your name<\/a> will likely bring up your actual age.
